Diabetes!

Many thanks for all the advice :goodvibes , I actually work at our local Hospital ;) , and on the advice from the Adult Diabetic Consultants (they have asked my DH to get a referral to see them!) they are concerned over the fact that he had pancreatitis. He has an appointment next week with the Dietician and his GP so hopefully we'll get the referral.

I hope he is ok karen,I am sure he will be though!

Well DH's been back to see his GP today, apparently she was lovely and has referred him onto an endocrinologist, and started him on medication as his blood sugars aren't really dropping, even though he's watching what he eat's, and we're all going on plenty of walk's together :confused3 , he's also seen the dietician who's given him a bit more advice ;)

He will get fixed out, it will just take time. It is so much easier dealing with nice people!

Thanks for the update.I really hope he gets somewhere now with all of this  .x.

he could be either type 1 or 2
As I'm sure you know, it's critical to find out because type 1 needs to be controlled with insulin injections, but they could actually make the situation worse in type 2 cases. Let us know how he gets on.

By the way, if it turns out to be type 2, I recommend you/he read the book Ultraprevention. In fact, the book is almost essential reading for all of us as we become insulin resistant thanks to our modern diet.

Type two diabetes is an insulin resistance state and is therefore a metabolic diabetes. Generally a disorder of middle age, we used to call it maturity onset diabetes. This usually develops after a time of insulin resistance. Many type 2 still produce insulin in their pancreas, but the body lacks the ability to respond to insulin in the correct way. The insulin response to diet is generally slower than a non type 2 person and this needs to be augmented by tablets.

Type 1 diabetes is an endocrine condition. The oldest type 1 that I know of at diagnosis was a 30 year old colleague of mine. They are not sure of the cause in all people but certainly in some sufferers this is an autoimmune condition triggered by a viral infection such as coxaci B. These patients have lost the ability to make insulin in the pancreas and after 'the honeymoon' period the pancreas is no longer making any insulin.

Some older diabetics who are type 2 go on to need insulin, but this does not mean they are type 1, they are known as 'insulin requireing type 2 diabetics.

My Brother in law presented with weight loss and thirst aged 49. 12 months later his numbers are all now within the normal range for glucose, HBa1c, blood pressure. His cholesterol numbers are slightly adrift from normal. He has changed his diet, excercises and takes two oral tablets to modifiy his response to dietary carbohydrates. His energy has fully returned and he works a 12 hour day 5 or 6 days per week. He now enjoys a glass of red wine with his meals but no longer drinks beer. He is carefull to only eat complex carbs and he aviods fast foods, sweets and packet meals. He eats healthy meat or fish with veggies but limits his intake of bread and potatos.

My mother in law is an elderly type 2 with some advanced signs.

My son is a 15 year old type 1 who manages his condition with a long and short acting insulin. He was diagnosed just last year.
