Diabetes on Board

Not everyone is a like. some
I'm curious why some of you are mentioning that you make a note to DCL so the waitstaff knows someone in your group is diabetic? Do they actually do anything different for them? My dad is diabetic and we travel with my parents often and he has never ever mentioned to anyone in a restaurant that he is diabetic, he just orders his meals accordingly and he's very careful about keeping his blood sugar in check. Just wondering if letting the waitstaff know is helpful in some way?

Everyone isn't the same. Some can do as you described. Others must know the carb count of the food they are eating and just guessing can be very dangerous. DCL will be able to provide a carb count for each menu item. He will input this into his pump and it will administer the correct dose of insulin. Childhood, Type 1 diabetes is completely different from Type 2. Coincidentally my father also had Type 1 so up grew up with my mother telling my father what was for dinner each night as he input the math to get the correct dose. Before pumps it was a lot of time and work. Being off a little can cause scary results. Low sugar is the more common problem from too much insulin and most dangerous.

Yup, definitely know that! My dad is type 1 as is my nephew. My nephew is on a pump but my dad self-administers his insulin. I think my dad has just gotten pretty good at knowing the carb count of most things, plus he obviously tests his blood sugar frequently! I was curious why people were notifying DCL but I guess you answered my question - to get the carb count!

Speaking of... in addition to my Rx stuff, I err on the side of total panic, especially when cruising, and bring any OTC meds that might be needed unexpectedly: Tums, Pepto, Tylenol, cold meds, Neosporin, etc., just in case we need a little something and can't make it to a drugstore or in the middle of the night. Ship meds are pricey and the store isn't open late or in port, and I don't want to be caught empty-handed. It's worth the space it takes up in my bag and *something* always gets used!
Everyone doesn't carry that stuff in their purse like I do? Overpacker here and it always gets used.

FYI, DCL cannot and will not provide carb counts for any of their menu items in the MDR. Our previous experience has been for the MDR serving team, when seeing Diabetes listed, to push the no sugar or low sugar items on the menu. Type 1 diabetics are not restricted to low sugar or no sugar items. They just need to compensate with insulin. (Yes, I know a healthy diet includes the limit of sugar, so don't lecture). I'm just saying, it can be annoying when a server questions what you order.

I just tell them no sauces, no potaotes, rice, etc. I mention the things I don't want every night. They usually include more vegetables.

Fair enough, I'll get a doctors note stating I need the insilun to function =)
Type 2 so I don't know if it would kill me - but it would certainly make me miserabe.
I dont take a Drs when I do. Do have a question... what kind of insulin do you get that you dont need a prescription for? I am T2.

Human insulin can be purchased OTC without an Rx. Technically, you do have to request it from the pharmacist, so not like picking up a bottle of Tylenol off the shelf. I don't know if this is what OP uses, but Novo Nordisk's Novolin ReliOn is available at WalMart without an Rx. Generally an Rx will be required if you want your medical/prescription coverage pay for any insulin.

Enjoy your cruise!

I don't know the exact name for it - we get it over the counter from walmart - walmart is the only place to get it over the counter and they only have one, so you just ask them for the otc insulin and they give it to you. They do have the 70/30 & the other type though. I do 70/30
