DH grew up with tons of animals, and a few weeks ago, a friend of mine was getting rid of her DD's hamster, she has 2, suppose to be male, well, 1 wasnt! LOL...we took the mommy.

Friday morning I woke up and noticed that 1 of the plugs in Ziggy's cage was inside the cage...he has a mansion- tons of levels etc... anyway, we start looking around the house, find Ziggy behind his cage, curled up....Seems Spanky- (cat) had some fun with Ziggy. I think maybe DD's left the plug not totally in, and ziggy hit it with his head, and it fell in...ziggy then got out, and spanky noticed him walking around the living room.

he was breathing kind of fast, had some wet marks on his back of his neck....I thought he died once when he went down his tube, and stopped 7/8 of the way...anyway- I put him in the small side of the cage, and disconnected it from the large. DH got home about 2 and said, can you just call the vet, and see if they can check her? So I bring her to the vets and the vet shaved the back of her neck...4 puncture wounds...and gave her a shot of antibiotic...ziggy sat up on her back legs and began cleaning her front feet. vet said good sign....well, this morning DH checked on her, and sure enough she died during her sleep. The vet said she doesnt seem to be in pain, as we were holding her, petting her etc.. she was not "playing dead" as they do when they are in pain or scared etc..

DD's and DH cried this morning, and I told them we would go to Petco tonight, and get another hamster...

DH had to go to work, and he said he just felt sad, ziggy was just starting to get use to the different house, and allowing us to pick her up and pet her etc...poor guy!

Aw, that's sad. :( He must be a very sweet, sensitive guy if he cares about a little hamster like that. :)

We lost a hamster once, it had a cage with "towers" in it and one morning I noticed the top of one tower was off and he was nowhere to be found. Never did find him. I always wondered what happened to him.

Sorry for DH's loss. What a neat guy though. Does he have a brother??? Oh, sorry, that's another thread!!!

Yeah, it's so sweet when the big guys go all soft for the little fuzzies.

Sorry to hear about Ziggy. Poor hamster.:(

Please pass on my best to your hubby, Brandy, a good guy indeed. If I was there, I'd even give him a  Sad.

DH is such an animal lover, it's not funny! His younger brother was working once, and picked up a dumpster with his truck, to find a kitten frozen to the ice behind it...he brought the kitten to the vet's spent almost $1500 saving it, and now has the cat! His whole family is this way. And they're not the typical "softies"...all are 6 feet or better, and about 225-250 LOL.

He called me to make sure I had cleaned the cage and set it back up, which I did....DD7 is at work with him today, and they're deciding now if they want a regular hamster or teddy bear type....

Thanks for the kind words, DH's feeling a bit better as the day progresses

Your post is making me want a hamster!!! My brother and I adored ours when we were kids. Sorry about your family's loss.

Awww, so sorry to hear about the hamster. :( I'd be sad about it too, if it were me.

I grew up with hamsters and gerbils as pets and even had one as an adult once (before kids). LOL

I'm glad your DH and DD are feeling better as the day goes on. :)

Sorry to hear of the loss. No matter what the size of the animal it's always sad.

We had hamsters when I was a kid - I raised one from our first litter and had her for three years. She was an albino, named Snowball, and I cried too the day she died. That was in the days of rectangular metal cages, sawdust on the bottom, and just a wheel for exercise, and I've often wanted to get a hamster now just so it could have one of those wonderful houses with all the towers and tubes and space to run....But I have two cats and three dogs, so I don't want to take any chances!

Poor guy! I am a hamster nut too. They are such cool little critters, but very clever about escaping (we named most of ours Houdini). My first Houdini was lost in the basement for a week before we found him (amazing that he survived the trip down the stairs!).

I hope you find a great new hamster and that s/he lives a long and happy life.

LOL!!! I was thinking the same thing :teeth:

I have a darling little hamster on my desk. Shes so cute.. a little brown dwarf. Shes almost a year old. We lost my sons hamster about 2 weeks ago (I noticed he had a tumor in his stomach). So we went to get a new hamster last weekend and yesterday morning she was dead... :(

Not sure what happened.

I might get him a pet rat instead since they rarely bite and are are somewhat more personable than a hamster.

We'll see.

I would be very upset if Phoebe dies, I really enjoy watching her while Im working. She always comes to the cage and begs for food like shes starving so I give her more and she stuffs it in her cheeks and puts it under her nest. She must have a pound of food back there.

Brandi, What a sweetie you have for a husband!:D We have always had a hamster in the house. Our latest one, Rolf, DS got for Christmas. We always give our hamsters German names because hamster, in German, means "to hoard", which is what they do when they pack their cheek pouches. We had one hamster, Ludwig (which we loving referred to as Luddie), that suffered a popped eye (I guess it is something that can happen under a stressful situtation). I ended up taking him to the vet and he surgically removed the bad eye. Surgery and $75 later, Luddie was as good as new! He earned another nickname after that: "Popeye"!pirate: Luddie lived another 1 1/2 yrs after his surgery. The things we do for our kids and pets!

We currently have 2 hamsters. Started off with 11 after the one we got at the pet store had babies. Needless to say we sold the babies back to the store. We just love our hamsters and I would cry something awful if something ever happened to them. We've had several scares though. One of ours is pretty sneaky about getting out. Around Christmas time we got up to him hiding behind the tree (and the cat gave his location away). He done this again a few days later but my mom was sleeping on the couch and thought the cat had a mouse. Good thing she checked before going back to sleep. Our cat could have definately had him several times but she doesn't seem interested in eating him, just playing with him. Neither time has there been a mark on him Weird, I know. Ours are very personable too. We sometimes watch tv and let them crawl around on the couch and on us. Haven't lost one yet.
