DHS food alternatives?

So I refuse to spend another penny there after several less than stellar experiences. The question then becomes where else is there? On a DHS day, is there somewhere to go that isn't ridiculously far? I know the Boardwalk isn't too far, but I don't know what good CS options there are. I also wonder if it's doable to get to DTD and back?? I hate to waste hours to avoid their food, but a little time and effort would be worth it to me...

I'm not familiar with counter service at Boardwalk, but Big River Grill was great and doesn't require ADRs.

We also enjoyed dining at the Dolphin. Picabu (counter service) is nice and not busy like the Disney resort food courts - dh especially loves their HUGE portion of nachos. We also tried The Fountain which had excellent food and service.

If you're trying to use dining plan credits, however, none of these will help.

At the Boardwalk you could do Spoodles. Beaches & Cream for a burger at the Cape May

We left DHS and went to POP's food court. It didn't take long, POP's bus stop is one of the first ones you come to and the ride didn't take but a few minutes.

I'm with the original op, there is no way I would put anything they call food near my mouth in DHS, especially ABC Commissary. What we do is just hop on the boat over to Epcot and grab a bite to eat there.

You know I kept reading on here about how bad ABC Commissary is but we had a pretty good meal there a week or so ago. We were PM EMHing at DHS and all the other CS places were closed, we were desperate and only ate there because absolutely nothing was open. But like I said, it was good. Better than Pizza Planet.

There are two easy options - either park hop to Epcot or hit something on the Boardwalk. We've done both and thought they worked equally well. There aren't many CS options on the Boardwalk, but the Boardwalk Bakery is pretty good. At Epcot, the options are pretty much countless, but you need a park hopper to take advantage.

Unless you have a car, and even then, going to DTD and then back to DHS would be way too time consuming in my opinion. I agree that your options are not wonderful, but we just consider our DHS day a non "foodie" day...
I like the idea of the Dolphin if you are not on the DDP and also the POP food court, is really good too if you are looking to go somewhere.

The last time we were at DHS, we just ate some snacks and things to tide us over. We took the boat to the Boardwalk and ate pizza from the take out window and mozzarella sticks from a Boardwalk stand and then took the bus from the Boardwalk resort to DTD for dinner.

If you don't like any CS instead of leaving why not do a TB for lunch @ 50's Prime Time or Si-Fi.

I think all CS meals taste the same at all parks and resorts....have never had specialty so dont know about them.....:confused3

I thought the Brown Derby was quite good for a park restaurant. 50's Diner was OK, a fun experience that eclipsed the food.

Sci-Fi was a great setting, but horrible food, and I remember Mama Melrose's not being too memorable.

How 'bout a Turkey Leg?

I agree, food options for CS are so limited at DHS.

Typically, I like to make it a day to have snacks. The sandwiches at Starring Rolls aren't bad, or I've had a bagel before from the Writer's Stop. There's a fruit stand as well to round out the meal. The place by RnR sells smoothies, which I always find really filling. Pretzels, ice cream, churros, popcorn...plenty to snack on I think. I think sometimes I actually prefer the fun snacking days to actually having a real lunch ;)
