DHS Counter Service Dilemma!

Hi folks! Okay we are doing DHS one day and have booked Mama Melrose for a 4pm dinner. Breakfast is in the room
I was thinking of grabbing a quick early lunch but the reviews of the counter service places has me worried! The kids are a wee bit picky but we just want to be able to relax, eat and then go again!
My DH loves GOOD pizza so didn't fancy the pizza planet by the sounds of it!
Any recommendations?

Well there is no such thing as good pizza in WDW. For that matter there is no such thing as good coffee in WDW.

I like ABC commissary but other don't. I also liked the backlot express.

Our family really enjoys the Backlot Express. They have a good variety of food, so even picky eaters can find something to eat . We used to like going to TS Pizza Planet a lot, until this past December when all 4 of us had to choke down our lunches....don't know if it was an off day or what, but we decided that we are going to give that place a rest this trip.

Someone told be the 'better' coffee was to be found at Writers Stop? Where is that? Thanks for your help guys!

If the weather is OK, there is an outdoor "food court" on the left as you head toward Tower of Terror. There are several food options surrounded by lots of picnic tables. Perhaps not the best food you will find but certainly edible and a good area for kids. According to All Ears, here are the options at that location:

Rosie's All American Cafe with burgers,chicken strips, veggie burgers
Catalina Eddies with Pizza
Fairfax fries by McDonalds
Tolucan Turkey Legs, which also has hot dogs

Writers Stop has good coffee, as well as good pastires. Not sure if they have lunch items like sandwiches or whatever. I'm planning on trying Pizza Planet this trip for the kids, but I hear ya on there being no really great cs options in DHS.

Our favorite counter service at DS is Pizza Planet. At least you get a salad with your pizza! We have been underwhelmed by most of the CS places at the Studios. We might go to Backlot Express, it was okay, but I have no plans to return to the ABC Commissary...ever!

Backlot Express is between Indiana Jones and Star Tours.

Studio Catering is the one in the back by the play area. I like them both, esp. the pork BBQ at Studio Catering.

We ate at Backlot express and it was good on our xmas trip this year. DH had pulled pork and I had chicken caesar wrap.. Large seating area. We liked it much better than mediocre pizza and salad at Pizza Planet and no fighting gor a table.

Your probably better off just having a larger than usual breakfast and having a mid day snack if you are going to have dinner at 4. It doesn't make too much sence to me to have breakfast, then an early lunch between 11-12 and then dinner at 4. But then again, that's just me.

This is where we always try to grab a quick counter service. It also makes it easy to grab a fast pass for either ToT or RnR before grabbing lunch.

We walk over to the boardwalk and eat at Beaches and Cream. Honestly not a lot more than a CS place.

You can find things like chicken nuggets, etc... at most places though.

We too have struggled at DHS. We usually go to the Commissary for A/C. This last trip (last weekend) we tried the food court. DH and I had that pizza. It was like Freschetta. We liked it. And we sat outside in the back and it was like we were the only ones there until Beauty and the Beast let out. But we decided it's always hot when we go so eating outside doesn't work for us.

Otherwise we leave. Before DD, we probably would go to Casey's at MK.

I would suggest a snack. Not sure where I was in DHS, but last trip we got some amazing soft pretzels. Yum.

Seriously...no question...STARRING ROLLS! (lunch starts at 11:30).

Delicious ham or turkey sandwiches with fruit or chips $9.

If you are on the dining plan, you get a drink and any of the amazing desserts as well.

We got the butterfinger cupcake as our included dessert:
chocolate cupcake
fudge center
mounds of white icing
coated in a hard chocolate shell
rolled in butterfinger pieces.

We shared one meal for 2 of us....the cupcakes are the size of your head.
So, just share.

If you want a soft pretzel snack at a cart, i suggest the regular ones. We got the apple filled ones and they were hard and dry and terrible.

How long is the walk to Beaches and Cream???

From the front entrance of DHS? A good 15 minutes.
