DH Worrying About What to Wear

I have been the one with compulsive planning disorder in this family, but now it seems to have kicked in with DH. He's concerned he's not going to have appropriate clothing for the various nights. He's been watching the DCL DVD with the kids and he's noticing how dressed up the actors are! While I realize (as does he) that there is some flexibility in the dress code, he certainly wants to dress the recommended way and not push the envelope towards casual. Here' what he's concerned about and I'd welcome input!

A regular suit is OK. If he wants to go formal (for pics and such) they do have a tux rental service that will deliver to your stateroom and pick up afterwards.

Thank you-- I'll be sure and let him know about the tux rental. But he's wondering about sport coat v. suit, tie v. no tie, etc. He's all set for nice shirt and khakis for normal dinner nights.

Here's what we're planning...
DH is brinning a navy blue suit. He'll wear the suit with a white botton-down shirt on formal night, then wear the jacket with khaki colored dress slacks for semi-formal and to palos, blue shirt one night, white shirt the other. Only one bulky item to pack and hopefully only one pair of shoes (for evenings).

I'd say the sport jacket will be fine for everything except formal night...and even then, depending on the color, he might be fine with it. The tie doesn't take up any room in the luggage so bring one or two neutral designs and he should be all set.

I think the male actors in the dvd are slightly overdressed in certain scenes.

Here's what I do - and just so that you know up front - it's not the most popular choice among the clothes fanatics on the DIS. So here we go...
Palo Dinner --- I've never been but I would wear a dress shirt and tie along with slacks (ok, this one's pushing the boundaries a little - but I've heard of others dressing this way)
Palo Brunch --- Polo shirt and slacks ... right on the money
Formal Night --- The dress shirt and tie and slacks
Semi Formal Night --- The dress shirt and tie and slacks ... again!

The other "normal" nights (non Tropicalli/Mexicalli/Pirates) I wear a polo shirt and slacks.

The final straw is that with all of the above "outfits" I wear sandals and dark socks. My justification is that size 15 sandals take up a suitcase whereas size 15 dress shoes take up a suitcase each

For formal/semi-formal nights, on 7 night cruises, maybe 25-30% of the guys wear tuxes. A fair amount of military guys wear their dress uniforms which look really nice (I count those as tuxes). About 50% of the guys wear nice suits and ties, 15% wear a sport coat, 5% wear dress shirt and tie, and the last just wear whatever they want. Special cruises, like the holidays will tend to get more people dressing up, but the numbers I gave seem to be about average.

I've never really noticed people dressing "nicer" in Lumiere's than other restaurants. Normal evening meal in the dining room ranges from about 15% in a shirt/tie or shirt and sportjackets, about 40% in an open necked, collared shirt, 40% in a polo/khaki combo, and that last 5% in whatever they want. Obviously, themed nights tend to range a little more casual.

I've only visited Palo once, but based on others inputs, I'd say it runs about 40% in suit/tie, 40% in sports jacket, and the last 20% in dress shirt and tie. I understand they are enforcing the dress shirt/tie rule in Palo now, but I'm sure people are still showing up in Hawaiian shirts and wondering why they're being turned back.

I hope this helps. For my family, seeing a numbers breakout helps them feel more comfortable.

Here's what my DH did on our recent cruise which was over the holidays so maybe a little dressier than normal.

Palos dinner - dress pants, dress shirt and tie Most men had on jackets some with and some without ties, but he looked great and felt comfortable.

Palos brunch - polo shirt and dockers as was just about everyone else.

Formal night - we had two. On the first he wore the rented tux but the cut wasn't very good for him. On the second he wore dress pants, dress shirt, tie and vest.

Semi-formal night - was our night at Palo - dress pants, shirt and tie.

All other nights he was in dockers and polo shirts. Hope this helps!
