I hate to say it, but I think $20 is probably fair. The technology is obsolete, and the XBox 360 consoles can be found refurbished for about $130 or new for $200. I doubt you would get much more than shipping costs if you tried to sell it on eBay.
Gamestop won't take them or even the games anymore and there is no support for live anymore on an original xbox so you are lucky to get anything for it.
Yeah, I asked my son and he said, "who would BUY an old Xbox?" with a major attitude laced in. Then he said, "The guy should just give it to him; they're friends right?"
From looking at completed ebay listings,I'd say it's worth between $50 and $80. People buy old games--I paid $50 for an atari 2600 years ago, and one of these days, I want to buy an old Commadore just so I can play games like Gold Rush and Heart of Africa. (I even still like text games like the ones Infocom made.) I'd let it go at $20 though unless you'd really ebay it. To most people it wouldn't be worth much.
I sold an XBox with a controller, DVD receiver and remote, DDR (with 2 dance pads), Karaoke Revolution (with 2 mics) and Music Mixer for $100 at a consignment sale. I ended up getting $70 (sellers get 70%). I was afraid I'd never get rid of that thing!! Adding insult to injury, I bought in college with a guy, and he was gone before the XBox was. Sell it at whatever price you can.
We'd just give it away. But then, we usually give stuff away all the time. The last thing I charged a friend or acquaintance for was a car ($7500). Unless you really need the money, why bother with $20-50?
