I finally get to tell ya'll about it!
First, DH left on the 13th for Iraq for at least 6mos (possible more, although I hope NOT). He was supposed to leave on the 12th, but he surprised us when he arranged to leave a day later. DD Remy had her first ballet recital on the 12th and we thought he'd miss it, but thanks to ALOT of very kind people at the unit, he was able to attend. Remy was so happy and it was a beautiful recital (okay, so I am a proud parent LOL). Then came Sunday...and the goodbyes. My two DDs and I were leaving for FL two weeks early to surprise my mom. She had not seen us for over a year and had yet to meet my new baby, Holly. Me and the girls were scheduled to leave at 0700 SHARP, but spent a good hour or more saying goodbye to DH (he left for the flight line and his plane to Iraq at 1030) in our driveway. Let me tell you how much my heart was breaking! I had to stand there and watch DH explain for the hundredth time to Remy why he had to leave for so long and it hurt. Then came Holly...who is a complete daddy's girl (Remy is closer to me). Holly is only 6mos old and my DH takes her to work while Remy is at school. It was hard to watch him try to find the words when it came to her. Then it was back to Remy again, which set a pattern. My DH is one of those military men who live and breath the job. He really doesn't cry. But he cried that morning. That is all I am going to say on that subject.
I left for FL with the girls by myself, which was an adventure let me tell you! It is a 24 hour straight drive from our house to my mom's and I took two days to do it. On the way, I had to defend Holly from the anger of a 5 yr old who DOES NOT like to be stared at by her little sister and then protect Remy from being snatched bald by Holly, who has a hair fetish. All before we reached PA. After stopping at (I swear) every rest stop we passed (why is it Remy has to go to the bathroom every ten minutes in the car, but not at home?) I got to stop at a hotel in NC. That's right, I got ALL the way to NC before we stopped. I think I deserve a medal! The next day we got to FL by 530pm. My mom had no clue we were coming so I had to stop at the store a block from her house to call my aunt, who lives across the street from her, to make sure she was not home. I got yelled at by my aunt because I hadn't called her since the night before and I was supposed to be checking in. OOPPS!!
I went to her house and we all took showers (have you ever smelled someone who had to spend two days in a car) before heading to Sam's Club where my mom works. My aunt and cousin carried Holly to the back where my mom was working, while me and Remy hid around the corner. Remember, she had never seen Holly, but would reconize me and Remy. She asked my aunt who the baby was and my aunt said it was a package for her from NY that had just arrived. My mom (the bonehead) was totally clueless and said no really, who is the baby. My aunt said it is your new grand-daughter. My mom got mad because she thought my aunt was messing with her and started arguing with her. That's when Remy started giggling. I guess a grandmother must never forget that sound because she started looking around and spotted us hiding. Now is the part where the screaming crazy woman freaked out the patrons of Sams Club. She finally realized that Holly really was her granddaughter and started to cry. I love bragging that I am now the queen of surprises in our family. Mom, who apparently does not have any maternal love for poor me, started smacking me. I think I might sue.
Well, I am sorry that this is so long, but I haven't had a chance to talk to anyone "normal" since we got here. I will now let ya'll get back to your lives. Thanks for listening and I will talk to ya'll soon!
