My husband was laid off today, completely unexpectedly. We had no idea, nor did the many other employees that lost jobs also. The Lord has carried us through worse and DH is graduating in May and we will be looking for a ministry position, so we are thinking maybe our search is supposed to sart now.

We were supposed to pay for our trip this week. Now we just aren't sure we should go. He recv'd a great severance package that will carry us through graduation and our trip is being paid for from funds we weren't counting on in our budget, but it seems like now we should put that money away.

I know that is the smart thing to do, but honestly I am devastated at the thought of not getting to take the kids. We were supposed to go to DC for 5 days last year (Dh and I ALONE) to celebrate our 10th anniversary. My inlaws cancelled keeping the kids and we had to cancel. I was so disappointed and had looked forward to that trip for a year. This trip represents ALL of that and more.

I am just BUMMED beyond all belief right now. Just needed to vent.:guilty:

God works great things to those who believe. It must be very hard but we will pray for a church to open up for your DH after graduation. What a wonderful calling in his life.

I'm not sure if you want someone to tell you that you should or shouldn't go to WDW, but you should do what you feel is best.... Many on this board are very opinionated on other peoples finances and what they feel is best for your family, but only you know what you'd like and hope for your family.

Best of luck to you and your family, and take heart and joy in whatever decisions you make... there is no wrong decision - have no regrets!

Thank you both. No, I know this is a decision for DH and I only. Only we know where our money is and what we have to do, budget-wise. We are letting this whole situation soak in before we even share it with others irl.

Like I said before though, we have been through worse. Our children are healthy, our marriage is strong, provisions have been made for us in the immediate future and we are still, even as a student family, in much better of a situation than a lot of Americans right now. We have a lot to be grateful for, even if we don't make it to DW this year.

Thank you for your kind words :lovestruc

I would go if I were you.Once your husband gets a different job he may not be able to get away.
My husband got laid off the beginning on January. He found a different job but does not get any vacation until he has been there a year. I really want to go on a vacation even if it is for a few days but it may not happen. We also got a good severence pay but he had to take a big pay cut. I would go if I were your.

So sorry to hear of your husbands layoff. I can not tell you how many friends and family members this has also effected. My dad got his layoff notice the day he went back to work after our December trip to Disney. My parents were glad they took the trip because after he gets another job the vacation time might not be there. My moms company is laying off fifty people today. I hope she is not one of them! The company my DH and I BOTH work at surprised everyone with a ten percent layoff two weeks ago. No notice whatso ever too! The first in the companies 24 year history. It is really bad out there. If one or both of us were let go we probably would have cancelled our May trip as well.

I hope everything works out for your family and you ate still able to take the kids to Disney.

I'm so sorry for your stress. It is so hard, especially if it is unexpected. My Dh was laid off last month. We have a trip planned for this May as well. We discussed in great detail what to do. I thought we should cancel the trip, save the money. I just didnt think it was a good idea, especially since he just isnt finding anything. We also talked about changing to a value resort which we may still do.

Dh is the one who convinced me we still need to take this trip. The kids are so excited as am I. He feels since we do have the money set aside already for this, we need to have this break and time together as a family making memories. If it were a choice between feeding our kids and the trip, the choice would be obvious, but we have the money set aside.

Its tough. I still feel a bit guilty and questioning, but I have prayed about it a lot and feel at this point we are doing the right thing.

Good luck deciding and I hope he finds something soon. God may close a door but he always has a reason for it I have found!!!

I'm so sorry to hear this. This economy is terrible. But your faith is so strong that I have no doubts you'll be smiling from inside the gates this year!

Good luck to you and your family.

:grouphug: So sorry to hear this, my company had a lay off too and the company is now on a 32hr work week. (I work only part time so they couldnt really cut down on my hrs)

Like other posters stated only you know what is right but maybe you should still go since you wont really know how much time he may get off when he gets a new job.

Good luck with your decision and I hope everything works out for your family:hug:

OP - I am in NC too. Lots of layoffs in my area (Durham). And a large divinity school. So I am wondering if you're near me? Which company did your husband work for?

I was laid off once about a week fafter returning from WDW. At the time I wish I would have known that I would be losing my job so I could have canceld the trip but looking back Im glad we went and had those carefree days.
