.....did he want to have a meal in a place where the wait staff "pick on you" or do funny things.

What a stick in the mud.

I know Whispering Canyon does this type of thing. What other restaurants should we avoid?

Prime Time Cafe in MGM also does that kind of thing. I can't think of any others off the top of my head. Sometimes the characters at the character dinners will do funny things with you, but it doesn't really draw attention from other diners since the characters don't make noise.

Prime Time 50"s Cafe in MGM and maybe dinner at O'Hanas (Poly).

I'm really lucky. I told my husband the same thing and he agreed with me. If I decide to eat at either of these places and I have some CM telling me to eat my green beans or no dessert, I will tell them to stick those %$*@* green beans where the sun don't shine. Pig Pen, I'm with your hubby.

I have never been to Primetime Cafe before; would like to try it sometime in the future.......But is it really true that if you don't eat your veggies you can't get dessert? They're just kidding you, right?? What if you don't "clean your plate" (which I never do)?

While I agree with al l the previous posts, I would also encourage your DH not to interact with the characters in any way other than a smile.

During our last trip this past June, we went to Chef Mickey's for dinner. During one of the napkin twirling episodes, Goofy was fooling around and was scooting along on his bottom on the floor. I made a comment to him, not loudly I may add, that there was medicine for that condition. Well, as they say, the rest was history.

Goof then proceeded to polish the top of my head in a very major production. While my whole family thought it was a blast, and I must admit the top of my head never looked better, I definitely had my four minutes of fame.

Bottom line is tell your DH to relax and have fun!

I have been looking forward to going there....

what do they do exactly?

I think DH is okay with some interaction. He just doesn't want to be the center of attention.

It's really peculiar because, after 25 plus years of marriage, I would have thought he would enjoy this!

I don't want to be made a fool of, but I'm all for good hearted fun.

:teeth:
My DH is the opposite.
He WANTS the interaction. the more the better.

We are going to Prime Time and Whispering Canyon.
:jester: I can hardly wait

I prefer the server and other restaurant employess to leave me alone while I eat. Come back about 10 mins or so after you serve to make sure we don't want anything / need anything and then watch from afar until you see we are done.

I certainly don't need someone telling me to eat my peas or whatever...

We're also not thrilled with the idea of servers messing with us while we eat so we avoid 50's Primetime and Whispering Canyon. It's funny but we don't feel that way about the characters. Maybe it's because we have our son there and they generally fuss over him.

I've heard at O'hana of an adult being made (asked?) to roll a coconut across the floor with his nose---
and also at O'hana of an adult male being made (asked?) to put on a hula skirt and dance in front of the restaurant.

We've been there 3 times - both alone and with our kids - and we have never had any CM ask any adult to participate in the festivities. Now granted, we usually eat early like 5:30ish so maybe goofiness might appear at later mealtimes, but truthfully I have not really read any reports, other than Uncleromulus, that they do anything with adults. Usually it's just the coconut races and hula hoop contests for the kids.

I'd go and enjoy.

The only thing I can think of at 'Ohana was my husband asked for ketchup and the waitress said just don't let the chef see it. But I hear they have dipping sauces now, so maybe we'll be safe next time we go :)

We have eaten at Ohana's upwards of 15 times and have never seen the CM's ask any adult to do anything. They do have coconut races and hula hoop things for the kids but Ive never seen them ask an adult to participate.

I can definitely understand his feelings toward Whispering Canyon... they are definitely the most "over the top" of any of those "types" of restaurants. We didn't have a great experience... too loud, server boardered on obnoxious and didn't know when to quit, and the food wasn't at all good. Our breakfast there wasn't as bad, but we got there when they 1st opened, and I don't think the servers were quite up to snuff by then...lucky for us!

Our "adventure" at Whispering Canyon almost made us miss out on Prime Time 50's Cafe. I am so glad I took the chance and ate there anyway. It was fun, not loud, and the food was great. Yes, they did pick, but not in an obnoxious way.

As for 'Ohana... other than the server calling you "Cuz" repeatedly, there is no picking... the kids are invited to participate in the coconut race and hula hoop contest, but don't worry, your husband won't be, so he needn't worry. We thought that 'Ohana was pretty laid back.

If you do the character meals, just let the hostess know for the characters to leave your husband alone. Sometimes they pick a little at Breakfastosaurus, and the Mad Hatter has been known to pick a little at 1900 Park Faire. Mostly, though, if you let the hostess/server know, they will leave the "stick in the mud" member of the party alone.

Oh, I almost forgot - we went there the first time on our honeymoon. The waitress noticed our nice new, shiny rings and asked if we were there on our honeymoon and we said we were. She brought us out a free dessert and the guy with the ukelele (can't recall his name) had us and other couples who were having a special event (anniversary, etc.) stand up and dance (slow dance with each other) while he serenaded us. But I would definitely not call it annoying. It was actually quite nice :)

Yes, they're just kidding. If you can't order dessert, you can't PAY for that dessert. :)

We had a great experience at Prime Time. My sister and I went and were intentionally 'bad.' She got put in time out. Her response to that was, 'They didn't have time out in the 50s.' I think she had to wear a brat hat a little later too. (I'm the GOOD sister, obviously.) She didn't eat her veggies. She DID have dessert. I think they're looking for people who want to play. If you obviously don't, I'm sure they'll leave you alone.

When we went last September, we loved the interaction, and several families were playing along as well. I did, however, notice two or three men come in and were seated near us. They did not act like they wanted to be bothered and they weren't. I think the servers have pretty good intuition when it comes to who they can and shouldn't mix with.

Sam
