Detroit-Style Pizza

Sounds like you've been there. It's right at ground level with McCormick & Kuleto's (part of the McCormick & Schmick's chain) above. It's a great location since there's just the park between it and San Francisco Bay.

I know the cheese shop (The Cheese School) you mention. It's nice and everything, but that place is just plain overpriced. I'm guessing it comes with the location. My go to cheese place is Cheese Board in Berkeley, which also has great pizza. But it is kind of sad that Cowgirl Creamery closed its shop at the Ferry Building.

Yeah, I've been a couple of times. When my daughter was a freshman, she was waiting tables at the Fishermans Wharf Applebees and stopped often on her way back to campus, so it became one of her first favorite places in the city and one she had to show us when we came to visit. Which means I got to go the first time I visited when it was just me, then again when DH was able to join us on a trip, and then again when MIL joined us the following year. But I'm not complaining, it really is a lovely spot.

The Saturday market at the Ferry Terminal is her other go-to for stocking up on snacks, but she never mentioned Cowgirl Creamery so I'm not sure if she tried it. I think she mostly gets fruit and accidental booze there (True story: She was 19 and a touch homesick, looking for ordinary apple cider because it is something we get a lot of in the fall here in Michigan, and two different vendors on two consecutive Saturdays sold her hard cider without carding her. She was actually disappointed when she opened it and realized what it was, and I ended up freezing some not-hard cider here at home so it would be waiting for her when she came home for the holidays.)

Cowgirl is a cheesemaker, and they operated a couple of now closed shops that sold a wide variety of cheese from different cheesmakers. Their main store was in Point Reyes Station at what used to be their original manufacturing site, but they moved most of their manufacturing to a large factory in Petaluma. They're owned by a big Swiss dairy company now. But they had a pretty nice location at the Ferry Building.

The Ferry Building does have a wide variety though, but some of it tends to be really expensive. But it's nice to just walk through and browse sometimes.

As for apple cider, I guess the closest thing we have here to that would be Martinelli's. But it's really just apple juice or carbonated apple juice that some use as a non-alcoholic substitute for sparkling wine.

I think your reference is to an unfiltered, cloudy juice that isn't fermented. I think this is the closest they have. Other makers might called an unfiltered apple juice.

But the place that might have something like what she's looking for is Sonoma County's apple growing region in Sebastopol. Or in San Francisco, the closest place might be Rainbow Grocery Cooperative.

They say that non-Italian pizza is a crime against humanity... I say that thick crust is delicious too :)
I say thick crust isn't pizza. It's a different dish altogether.

It's like saying I love pork chops, but I don't like pork so I use chicken instead. No, you made chicken.

Or I love spaghetti, but don't like pasta so I used spaghetti squash. No, you made spaghetti squash.

I love pizza, but I prefer thick crust or Chicago style. No you like an open face sandwich or you like a casserole.

That's my view on it.

My dentist recently told me about Detroit style pizza. Apparently there IS a place here for it in NYC pizza land. He made it sound interesting.

But, when I got home and looked up the place, NOPE! It just looks like thick, DOUGHY Sicilian slices. :crazy2: I'm sticking to the thin, crispy crust NYC style pizza we made famous. There is a certain ratio of crust to sauce to cheese. There is still no improving on perfection. 🍕🍕🍕
