For those of you who don't know, Pat, dh and I ran Detroit yesterday. Here's a brief, for me report. FOrgive the lack of pix, but my camera is still on my number belt.

I really am happy with what I did yesterday. I bombed a bit at the end, but that means I gave it all I had. I eased back when I started feeilng my one knee because the uneven pavement was adding up, but the tunnel from mile 8 to 9 was very level and nothing really hurt again after that. I learned 3 new lessons in the tunnel.

1. EVen when it's not too hot, stagnant air gets old and stuffy.
2. GArmins don't do well on teh underwater international mile.
3. ANd, here's teh biggest: WHat goes down, must come up. We flew down. I had just told dh that that was the best downnhill slope I'd every run. ENough tomake you fly, but not too much to get you hurt. Got the word out of my mouth adn the uphill appeard. Ugh. It curved, so you never knew how far 'til you were done. (I'd have to say that I rpefer bridges where you know you get a downhill when you finish teh up.

I had one good post-tunnel mile, then we went uphill away from teh river for a mile and a half. That stunk. We finally crested just before 12 and I was about to sigh in relief, but my calves told me that they didn't care if it was up or down, they were done with hills! The rest of my legs followed. I was happy because it was just basic deadness. My knees adn hip were fine, so that was god. I got a burst of enerygy after seing my parents adn turnign the corner to the finish. But, I coudln't see the finish. In major bite me zone, I said, "Where the heck's teh finish?????" Dh said it's by the start. No, we passed that and we're coming up on our corral (last). People had been saying 4 blocks for, uh, well, 4 blocks!!!!

Then, they guy at the corner yelled, "You can see teh finish around the corner!" See it? I want to be done! My body gave up on teh final kick 4 blocks ago. I turned the corner and didn't see it. Oh, he meant the next corner (we were at a wheel hub, basically). FInally, I saw it. 1/4 mile away!!!!! When we turned teh corner after my parents, there was also a cihp mat. FIgured it was mile 13. Must have been 12.5. NO idea why. I finished, but that part stunk stunk! The maps did NOT show an out and back at the end!

Did the post race stuf and headed back to see Pat. FIgured I had at least 15 minutes. OMG, there she was! I infomed her that she had about a half mile and it was an out and back. She did not look happy and I felt awful telling her, but I wished I had known.

Clock time, she had beat her PR by 2 minutes! We all started togetehr and it had taken 7:30 to get to the start. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

It was fun crossing the border twice and even better with another WISHer.

Oh, we had TONS of comments on our shirts. One guy told us he had a dlf on his tri last month adn was last by like 4 minutes. Our shirts made him feel better. Now, he was flying by us, so he was one most of us would really look up to adn it still happened to him. Pretty cool. We also saw teh big guy from TnT who wore teh big purple (and yellow?) Cat in the Hat hat at WDW this yeaer. He was on a spirirt crew. He ran with us for a bit when we confirmed that he was the one we saw. That was neat.

Finally, my parents found out why we cheer for teh half. They were trying to wait for pat at around the 10-mile mark, but wanted to catch us finish too. So, they were able to cheer fo a lot of back of teh pack people. My mom said, "Wow, you can really tell those people appreciate the cheering. I just couldn't believe it." Yes, mom. It's only taken you over 2 years to figure that out. It was neat to see her realization, though. Yup, those of us who struggle need all teh help we can get.

One last thought: The crowd started going nuts as the finish line came into sight. I knew it wasn't for me. After teh finish, they annouced that the full marathoner who had finished just before us qualified for olympic trials. So, that can be my claim to fame. ;-) Wish I reembered her name.

ANyway, great race. Great spirit crews and bands most of the way. Defnietly glad I did it!

What a great weekend.....

Thanks to the generosity of fellow WISHers Carrie and Scott and her parents I have added another state to my half marathon collection (up to a whopping 5 if you are counting!!)

I arrived in Detroit Sat at noon and Carrie and Scott picked me up at the curb. What great service! We headed to the expo to get our "stuff". We got a chip to test - it peeled off the bib and had a hole punched in it so you could thread your shoe lace through....new technology! The expo itself was pretty nice, not as big as Disney, but much bigger than Chicago, although they didn't have a lot of freebies (always my hubby's favorite part). We wandered around a bit, Carrie bought a really cute outfit, and then we walked along the riverfront for a bit. It was a little windy but sunny and it was great to see a some of the sights. The Ambassador Bridge connecting USA and Canada was off in the distance and it was very impressive.

We then headed to Carrie's folks home, about 45min(?) from Detroit. The whole family is huge football fans and they were watching the Michigan State/Ohio State game, just so happens that my youngest attended OSU for a couple of years. It was a lot of fun watching the game with true fans. My DH is a NASCAR fan and couldn't care less for football. OSU won by the way!! We went out for a lovely dinner/pasta load and then it was back to watch Illinois vs Michigan.

I never sleep well before an event, but I did get quite a bit of sleep before it was time to head out Sun morning. The half had different categories - runners, competitive walkers, and non-competitive walkers, with different color bibs for each. I had registered as a runner because the walker divisions were closed and ended up in the very last runner corral, as did Carrie. Scott moved back with us so we could stay together for the start. Of course after crossing the start line I didn't see them again until they cheered for me near the end after they had finished.

The course had several spots with live entertainment - motown of course. One of them was singing Supremes songs as I passed, what a hoot! After a couple of miles I was walking with a couple of women, turns out one of them is heading to WDW in a couple of weeks, so of course we had to talk Disney for a while.

Now for the worst.....the Ambassador Bridge. Remember that I am used to flat as a pancake courses.....well this bridge was steep and seemed to go on forever! At this point I was by myself and let me tell you it was tough. I was about 3/4 up and had to look around to make sure I wasn't going backwards!! Kind of like General Knowledge in Cranium Command..."if you were going any slower boy, you'd be going backwards!" That's kind of how I felt. I just kept reminding myself about part of a quote that somebody here has/had in their signature. It's by George Sheehan (don't know who he is), but the end of the quote is..."eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit." Well I wasn't gonna let that bridge beat me!

Mile 4 was right at the top of the bridge and the view was fantastic, but I
didn't enjoy it much because I was overheated by the climb, and chilled by the wind at the top. It was great to head downhill and into Canada though. The Canadian side of the course was beautiful although it didn't have as many spectators. There is a sculture park right along the river and the road we were on was above that, so we saw the beautiful park landscaping with the river and the Detroit skyline beyond that. Very cool. This was definitely the best part of the course for me.

At mile 8 we headed into the tunnel. The incline into the USA was more gradual, but you couldn't see the end, and I agree with Carrie that not knowing how soon you were going to be out was tough. And by time I got out the 6:30 marathon group passed me. Oh well. It was pretty straightforward after that. Carrie, Scott, and her folks were cheering for me toward the end and that is always a big lift.

I finished with a clock time of 3:24:40, chip time of 3:19:09, for a pace of 15:13. My prior best time was 3:28:25, so I will take it! And the medal is pretty cool too!

I can't thank Carrie and Scott, and her parents enough! They were wonderful hosts and made my trip possible.

I will post photos later if I can get Jim to download the pics from my camera!

Congratulations, Pat & Carrie & Scott! The race reports are great and the bling is gorgeous! Pat -- congratulations on the new PR!!! :woohoo: I am so glad you had the opportunity to share this experience. It seems like the race is one I might consider some day -- I've never been to Canada!
Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks everyone!

Just wanted to add that the back ofk the medal said Meet Me at the Border in English & French. Very cool!

Hello Carrie and Pat: I didn't know you did the Detroit Half Marathon until I found this. See how out of the thread I've been. Congratulations (albeit very late)!!!

Congratulations!
I love those medals too :cool1:

I was registered, training for the Detroit last year and broke my ankle. I walked a half mile home on a broken ankle but only cried when the doctor said I could not walk! :sad2:

I am going to try to do it in 2008.

Enjoy His 'Son' shine!

So sorry to hear about your foot!! How disappointing to train and not be able to participate. Good luck in 2008, the course is a whole lot of fun!!

Congrats Carrie, Pat and Scott!!!! :goodvibes :thumbsup2

Awesome job...sounds like you had a great run and was a nice event. Thanks for sharing pictures :).

Great work and great photos, WISHers! Thanks for the reports!

Love that medal -- I need to put that one on my list of races to do.

AmyBeth - you're the one with the George Sheehan quote in your signature! I love it!

I am going to have to google him! I think of the last part of that quote often and even printed it out and put it up in my office because it is so true.

Wendy - this race should definitely be on your list! It was awesome.
