Recently a family member asked me how do I calculate what the cost is for my DVC stay if each time I make a ressie I use only points. What is the assumed cash value for a DVC stay? Do I use the price per point I paid or the price that is currently available???

I keep a running tab on how much we've spent and how for DVC. One column is how much $ we've put into it to date(downpayment, dues, payments, etc). The other column is what we've gotten so far (what resort we stayed at, the dates, and how much the room would have been for the same ressie paying cash with the rack rate or whatever is the best discount; oh and how much we saved with DVC discounts for meals, etc.). It is kind of cool to put it into perspective. Some people have spreadsheets to figure these things out, a sheet of paper and pencil is just fine with me.

If you are trying to figure out the point cost (in $) for your stay. What I've done is figured out how much it will cost total including dues, inflation of dues, total payments, etc over all the years and divide that by the total # of points you will have recieved over all the years. (When I did it out, it was something like $6/pt or so, don't remember exactly.) Then with the $/pt you multiply by the # of points you will be using. (If you want to, then compare it to what the room rate would have been if you were paying straight up cash.)

To me, it really depends on why you want to know, LOL!

If the stay is just for my family, I don't calculate the cost at all - the "calculations" were done before we purchased. At that time, we determined that DVC would be a good economic value for us, considering the way we vacationed. Now I just remember that it turned out to be the way to go for us.

If I'm going to rent points or consider a non-DVC option, I calculate the value of the stay at $10/point. That seems to be the average "market" value of the points.

If I'm "sharing" DVC accomodations with friends or family and they inisist on paying, we generally just have an argument that I always win. I let them buy the groceries or a nice meal out for everyone in lieu of paying for the accomodations if they continue to insist and most do, LOL!

If I am just talking to friends/acquaintances about the value of DVC, I often quote rack rates for the DVC accomodations. If I happen to know that there are code discounts available for the DVC rooms (and I have been surprised that often there are NOT any for the times I'm checking), I'll mention those.

With one exception (graduation gift for daughter), we've not "gifted" any points to someone when we weren't traveling with them. So far, no one's asked us, too and I'm glad. Hate to say no, but I would! Don't have enough points to share in that way.

Doubt I've helped you, any. But thought I should say more than "It depends!"

When I am estimating my own stay, I usually use $6 per point. The reason I do this is that I paid $70 per point. If you divide that by 40 years that equals $1.75 per point per year and then add in the maintenance cost per point per year. I just round up to $4.00. So, I guess that is $5.75, but I just round up to $6.00 per point.

So my 9 nights stay in a 2 bedroom in October that costs me 404 points, I estimate to cost me $2,424.00 or $269.33 per night. This is with 5 week nights and 4 weekend nights. I think that is a great price for a 2 bedroom.

Terry S.......it makes it seem even better when you go to the WDW reservations page and find that a ressie for that size/length/dates would be over $7000.00!!

I like to calculate my value based on a comparable room. For example we are going next Christmas with my SIL. We rented her a room on points as a gift for a few nights. It was 50 points for a studio. At $10.00 per point that comes to only $500.00. But to rent a room at the Beach Club for that same time period is $500.00 per night. So we saved $1,000.00 by using points. So what is our value? I would say $1,500.00 because that is what I would be paying if I didn't have points.

And that is only for her room. We have a two bedroom for the whole time we are there. In the past we would have paid for two connecting regular rooms at $1,000.00 per night!!!!!

So using my calculation method of value really comes down to the time of year that you travel. During the holiday times, the value is considerably higher.
