Can someone who has rented points for a reservation help me with these questions?

  • If you rent points, will you be able to see the reservation in My Disney Experience and attach new dining and FastPasses to it?

  • If you cancel an existing reservation that has dining and FastPasses attached to it and you re-book your dates with rented points, will you lose those reservations and FastPasses?

  • Can magic bands that you just received be reassigned to the new reservation made with rented points? If not, will we be able to get magic bands for a trip made with rented points?
It may make sense for me to cancel an upcoming trip and rebook with rented points so I'm trying to make sure I understand every facet of both cancelled points (in holding) as well as how a reservation on rented points works and if there are any drawbacks to it. (I don't need the dining plan so no worries there.)

Thank you!

1. Yes, a reservation is a reservation and you'll be able to see it in MDE
2. Fastpasses are linked to tickets. Dining reservations aren't linked to anything. If your package included tickets and you have no valid admission in your MDE profile, fastpasses would be cancelled. Otherwise, you're fine.
3. Magic bands are linked to your profile, not your reservation. Any bands you have will work, and you'll get new ones with any reservation.

You mention "holding" points, but nothing else in your post affects them. Is there something else you need help understanding?

I purchased tickets separate from the reservation I made using our DVC, but I have attached those tickets to the reservation and of course the FastPasses I have booked are linked to those tickets. So, I want to be sure cancelling the reservation made with my DVC points will not affect my FastPasses.

That's great on the dining! I didn't book much but don't want to lose what I did!

Lastly, my trip is in less than 2 weeks, so my points will definitely go into holding!

Here is why I am considering it...I can rent some points at an attractive price for our upcoming trip. In addition to this trip, we plan to go to Disney at spring break, and if I use OUR dvc points for this upcoming trip, I will either need to borrow or transfer in points to complete the spring break reservation. If I transfer, I know the cost of those points will be significantly more expensive per point than the ones I could rent for my upcoming trip. So in the long run, it could save me several hundred dollars. BTW, I do understand about the 60 day rule, but since we want to go to AKV for spring break and I know that resort usually has better availability, I feel like it's a safe gamble.

Am I crazy for entertaining this idea?

One thing to keep in mind is to make sure that the reservation you want to get with the rented points is actually avail BEFORE you cancel your current reservation. Based on recent reports the wait list seems to be grabbing rooms the second they are released so if the room you have now is not currently avail for booking and you release yours the waitlist could take it and you'd be left without accommodations

Nothing is ever a guarantee but the fact that you basically will have 1 year to use those holding points is certainly in your favor as is the fact that you are looking to use them during less busy times (ie not the fall). You may not get AK but I would think SSR would be a sure bet
We actually rented distressed points in May this year for a 2 BR at SSR 2 weeks out and were able to get 3 consecutive nights
