Hi all you teachers out there...

My sister just graduated from college and is student teaching. I read about all of these rates for teachers on the boards. How does one go about getting this discount? Is there like a "I am a teacher" card for proof? haha. I travel with my sister all of the time so it would be nice to benefit from her career.

Thanks!

Historically, they have not included student teachers in the discount. Student teachers are not employed by the schools nor do they hold a teaching certificate. I'm also a bit puzzled by the description of your sister's situation. How can she be student teaching if she's already graduated from college?

I wasn't clear enough: I didn't mean getting a discount while she was student teaching...I mean in the future when she's a full-time teacher. I told my sister about possible discounts and she wanted me to look into it for her. She is finished with college classes but has 10 weeks of student teaching while under the university. So she is done with classes and is considered graduated from credits, etc., but is under the Uni. for another 10 weeks. I was aiming at a general answer to my question. Does her teaching certificate number work as verification for booking WDW resorts? I know nothing about all of this...

Teacher rates are for the Swan and Dolphin resorts. They run $144 at the Swan and $129 at the Dolphin until it is fully renovated, then it will likely match the Swan rate. You call the hotel directly and ask for the teacher rate for your dates.(if available) When you check in you MAY be asked to show a copy of your teaching certificate(they made a photocopy of mine) or a pay stub. It also applies to nurses and gov. employees. They have their own cert. proof.

Sorry, I'm a non-teacher from a large family of teachers and married to one too... but I'd never heard student teaching described that way. It's my understanding that student teaching is usually a for credit, and a graded one at that, activity. But anyways...

As for as what's required for the discount. You can use the following:
School issued photo ID stating that you're a teacher.
School pay stub stating that you're a teacher.
A letter from your Principal on school leaderhead stating that you are employed as a teacher.

Historically, they have not accepted teaching certificates/licenses as that's only proof that you COULD be a teacher. However, some people recently have been told that certifcates were OK.

I was told when I called the Dolphin this summer to bring my teaching certificate, but I didn't want to lug it around and didn't know if they would accept copies. We showed a pay stub.

I am a teacher in a non-traditional setting, but I AM teaching. I do not work for a district, I work for the county, who contracts with an agency for me to provide special education services. I do not have a school issued photo ID, a school pay stub, OR letterhead. We used this discount in 2001 with my license, no problem at all. I would be very upset if they would limit this to educators who only work for a district, I make way less than most teachers, (yet I love my job, so I am not complaining!) and the discount is a vacation-saver! Good luck-just check with the hotel first.

Thanks for the information everyone.

Compared to where I am in school, I consider my sister done with college.....even if she's not "technically." :)

Swan and Dolphin are the only ones who have teacher rates?

Mousefansmom--
I'm glad the teacher rate works out for you. It wouldn't seem fair otherwise.

mousefansmom,

Glad that worked for you. We used the discount at the Dolphin in May 2002 and I was specifically told by the hotel when I made the reservation that a teaching certificate would not do for the exact reason I stated. So we showed up with a signed letter from my wife's Principal. But like I said, many people are now being told that merely proving that you might be a teacher via a certificate will do. Regardless of what I say, each person should ask the reservation agent what's required, record their name, and then bring what they tell you.

Even if you wouldn't have been allowed the teacher's rate, you still would have qualified for the government rate... so it would have been a moot point.

I was told to bring my teaching certificate. I hope this is not a problem!! Has anyone actually been turned down with a valid teaching certificate? Help!!

Yes, only at the Swan and Dolphin. And Yes, always call the hotel first. I took a copy of my teaching certificate and it was no problem. It always helps, as was said, to write down the name of the person that gave you info from the front desk and bring it with you. The Swan and Dolphin are lovely hotels, have a wonderful location and the deals can't be beat for deluxe hotels. (imo)

Nope, gov't rate doesn't work either, because my check comes from the non-profit agency I work for, even though I am considered a county employee. Very messy. What makes it even harder is that the name of the agency that I work for is called Valley Packaging Industries. Try to explain THAT to a new parent of a special needs child -- when they call, the phone will be answered that way!!!! (By the way, I do birth to three, early intervention special education-very specialized, I have a master's degree and this position requires state licensure- just so people realize that it is not daycare:D ). I know that this is not a typical setting, but I still believe I am the type of person that the Swan/Dolphin is trying to help by reducing rates. Hopefully they will continue to help those of us who have dedicated their lives to others.

last month and was told to bring a school ID and a copy of my wife's Teaching Certificate. They only asked for the certificate at check-in and they actually read through it all and made a note from what state it was from. They said they are having to be more careful with the discount as it seems some have tried to abuse the discount.
