Which area should we try to find a place for 10 to stay? Not sure which area is more family oriented. There will e 4 adults and 6 kids: 18mths, almost 4, 9, 11, 14, and 14. Also--any good place to rent a condo or somewhere on the cheaper side? Thanks

We do a huge family trip (about 40 of us) to Destin each year. We always stay at Southbay by the Gulf. (We have been going there for over 20 years) They are all 2-3 bedroom townhouses and are individually owned, so some are nicer than others. They are Beachside but the property is quite large so you can rent one that is beachfront or you can chose lakeside, poolside or further out, depending on preferences and budget. Southbay is right across from Big Kahuna's water park. Traffic is rough getting in and out of Southbay but that is how it will be anywhere on the beach in Destin during the summer months.

If you want a high rise, Jetty East is one that my parents have stayed in and enjoyed. I have never been there myself.

If you want to consider saving a little money, going somewhere a little less crowded and staying just a bit to the west of Destin...my parents own 4 condos in Gulf Shores, AL. that they rent out. I can attest to the fact that these are nice...I was there just last week. :)

Just curious--how far are the ones your parents have from Orange Beach--we have stayed near the pass bridge going from Orange Beach to Perdido Beach.

Our family's condos are actually IN Orange Beach. I guess I kind of think of it as being Gulf Shores, but it's actually Orange Beach. You can see them at this link: www.Burdettecondos.com

I like both Destin and Orange Beach. Both have beautiful beaches...but Orange Beach is just a little less crowded and I prefer less crowds.

LOL what a timely thread. I was just looking for a place to rent in Orange beach for the last weekend in May. Rick Springfield will be playing at The Wharf resort.. but Im not really interested in staying there as Im pretty sure its on the bay. Ill check out your parents condos.

I adore Destin go every summer. We stay with Neman Dailey resorts and when we do family time we like the Windancer condos.. very small area.. with pool, right on the beach. Super quiet. Not the real updated, which is reflected in the price, but if you must be on the beach its a real good deal. You all could rent two next to each other.

We also like Quiet surf with Newman.. not the most updated, but super clean and you practically fall in the water lol. No pool with that one .. but a fantastic restaurant across the street that you can just run and pick up from. Not on a real busy street at all.

When we go with just the adults, we tend to do the high rise more expensive condos. We have been staying with them for about 6 yrs and have always been pleased.

Ohhhh... I used to have a huge Rick Springfield poster plastered over my bed. I loved him. And, if you book one of my parent's condos, let me know! :)

We love going to Destin each year. We stay at the Edgewater Condos. They are right across the highway from the outlet mall. They have a great website that lists prices and has photos of each condo. We always rent on the walk out level which is perfect. There is a playground, 2 pools, hot tub, and beach chair set up included. The building is older but everyone is updating the condos as you can see from the photos and the grounds are beautiful.

The Wharf is on the Bay and the cost is very high!

We go to Destin/Ft. Walton every year (10 minutes apart from each other). We prefer Ft. Walton since it's so much quieter, but yet still an easy drive to Destin if we want to go over to Baytowne Wharf. We rent thru VRBO.com and usually stay in either Azure or Waterscape. Azure has only 3 and 4 bedroom units that are really nice and Waterscape has 1 bedroom (with bunk beds in the hallway) up to a 3 bedroom (some have bunks as well).

Good Luck! It's a beautiful beach!

Neat to see how many people like our town! I would agree that VRBO is a good site to try since they have many of the biggest condos on there at a better price then you will get if you call ResortQuest which is a property management company here.

One thing that you should watch for is the statement a lot of places use "just across the road from the beach." We have a pretty major road that is jammed with fast moving traffic in the summer. If you have little kids, you do not want to be running across the road with flip flops, beach toys etc. Clarify which road they are talking about before you book.

Enjoy your visit. The beach is the best!
