ok it's Jan 1st and i just cannot wait any longer to get my pretrip report started :goodvibes I've been waiting for over a year already for this trip and just need somewhere to keep track of things and to also help keep myself accountable while i train for my first 5k run.

Let's start with the CAST;
Kim (38) - That's me! :) I work at home for my husbands photography business. I am in charge of communications, blogging, facebook page maintenance, booking, and I edit aprox. 80% of portrait sessions and 20% of weddings. I also make cards such as baby announcements, Christmas cards, and wedding invites and thank you cards from our clients photos if they want. Oh - collages too :) In my spare time **INSERT ROLLING EYES HERE b/c that can be hard to find between June and Dec*** I watch my little niece Mon - Thurs, and my DD13 and I deliver flyers 3times/week. On the side *insert another eye roll b/c like I have time for on the side stuff* I help out at DD's school for outings etc.. and babysit casually for some people in the evenings. The babysitting and the flyer route are for extra money to put towards trips.

Wayne (40) - that's my DH whom I am still madly in love with after almost 19 years of marriage. We will celebrate our 19th anniversary in WDW on May 1st by going out for supper at Sanaa. He works in a printing shop and also does photography on the side **YEP - INSERT ANOTHER EYE ROLL HERE b/c his photography can be a 2nd FULL time job between June and Dec and a part time job between Jan and May*** We're not busy at all hey?? LOL

Cali (13) - that's our DD she will be 14 on our trip. and she's making a trip report too - I'll add the link here later. She plays the french horn, is a swimming BEAST who's working on the 2nd out of 3 classes towards her lifeguarding certificate and our only child. She has taken on our love of Disney but is also totally in LOVE with Hawaii since we went there last January. She picked our name for the EE Challenge 5K run and it's Stoked Coconuts which fits right in with her Hawaii obsession. lol.

we are up north here in Canada - in Saskatchewan and it's cold here alot of the year as in we CAN have snow for like 6-7months of the year. This year has been gloriously mild though
and here we are.....

iverson-301.jpg

THE PLAN;
tentative schedule for END of APRIL and into MAY is...

offsite at Windsor Hills
doing Disney parks, 5K Expedition Everest Challenge, Typhoon Lagoon, Sea World, Aquatica, Busch Gardens

Madeira Beach for a wedding

Onsite at Universal Studios Royal Pacific Resort
for Universal parks, Harry Potter Land and front of the line enjoyment of all the rides
:thumbsup2

So the reason i'm starting my pretrip report so early is that as soon as dd and i found out about the Expedition Everest 5K challenge we decided to sign up! I am usallly very inactive and have tried couch to 5k 2 times in the past but always give up when it gets cold here. This is going to give me the motivation to keep it up and actually be able to participate in my first run while we are in the happiest place on earth!!! We are SO excited - but we lose motivation easily so i'm hoping this will keep me accountable. For now i won't post too often except to talk about how my training is going but i'll throw in some details here and there too.

so please feel free to post any running tips you have for me b/c all help is welcome :) and if i'm not posting feel free to give me a cyber kick in the butt to continue to keep accountable and on track for my training.

Thanks and I look forward to sharing this great experience with you.

ok time to start being accountable. I know that recording this for so many people to see will help me to stay on track and train more than i would with nobody knowing about it.

As i said before i have spent most of my life being pretty sedentary. I didn't much care for any sports and never had a need to work up a sweat. lol. it wasn't until my 30's that i started putting on a bit of weight and having to battle the bulge of the muffin top :scared1::scared1:

ive attempted to start the couch to 5 k twice but i usually stop when it gets cold here :( I'm up in Canada and we can potentially have snow for 6 - 7 months of the year. I've always had a treadmill but just found it boring.

Anyway, here is what i've done so far since we realized there was going to be a 5k during our trip time.

November
10th - 5k in 46 min (thought i would die but had to see if i could actually do it in the required time which is i beleive around the 50 min mark)
15th - 5k in 43 min (nearly died AGAIN)
20th - 5k in 42.5 (again it was H.A.R.D!! wondering at this point if it ever gets easier???)
25th - 5k in 43.18

at this point i realize i'm only getting on the treadmill once every 5 days and that's just not going to cut it. i did some research too and read up on how to do a fast mile so i decided to add a fast mile and try to get in more than one run per every 5 days.

27th - fast mile in 12.15 - ok - i'm not exactly fast ROFL!!! The webiste i read was how to do a fast mile in 6 min i think. DH and i were shocked that we are at the 12 min. mark. hahahahaha - it was an eye opener for sure

total k's run this month - 21.6!!! wow - i was really impressed with myself. it may not be much but i was actually sticking with it and able to improve my time most runs!!!

December
1st - 5k in 40 min 40 sec ********** this is my happy dance b/c this is the goal i set myself. i figured if i could run the 5k in 40 min i would definitely be good to go for the challenge. I wanted to factor in some time for the obstacles and figured 40 min to run and 10 to fit in the obstacles should mean i'm good to go and it can only get better right??? if i hadn't gotten sick that is!!!
4th - fast mile in 13 min (funny - looking back now i see this is where i started on the slippery slope downhill)

6th - fast mile in 13.22
12th - 5k in 41.33 (oops - that was a 5 day break again :confused3
15th - fast mile in 14min

21st - started getting a sinus cold and realized my ambitious start was going downhill. lol. figured i'd squeeze in a run today anyway but stick with a couch to 5k instead to try and pace myself a bit better and have a program to follow.

:sick::sick::sick:- yep!! This is me being sick with a nasty sinus cold which turned into a cough that i'm STILL fighting through the holidays :sad1:
and thus i ended my December jogging.

my total for December ended up being aprox. 18.5 k. still better than nothing right??

January
a new year and new start!! Even though i am still coughing due to the fact that i have hyperactive airways that can cause coughs to really linger for me i wanted to get back on the treadmill to start the year off right. so...

1st - C25K week 3 - 3k in 28 min. I'm at about half what i was before i got sick but one time early in the jog i tried pushing myself a bit harder and felt my lungs burning so i knew i couldn't overdo it and kept it easy. When i was done though i felt SOOO good to be back at it :) wow!! Did i just say it felt good to run??:confused3 wow - i'm definitely changing. lol. the old me would just laugh at the thought of jogging!!! hahaha

so my plan is to stick with the c25k program and try and keep consisten with it by running the suggested 3 times/week. I find it HARD to find the time to get in a run more than a few times/week b/c i havy my little niece here during the day, when she's napping I need to edit photos and reply to emails, and numerous other work related things for our photography busines, and when dd gets home from school her and i go out 3 days/week to deliver flyers. i really need to just find the time though so i'm hoping i can figure that out b/c i know a consistent schedule will really do wonders in getting me to where i want to be.

the previous poster would be my daughter. she's having an even harder time than i am getting on the treadmill. lol. however she's young and i know she won't need as much training time as i will. That's NO EXCUSE though stoked coconut!!! lol

Speaking of her - she picked our team name :) We are The Stoked Coconuts!!:thumbsup2 i love it!!!

Hi Kim, you mentioned your PTR over on the EE5K thread and I came over to follow along!

Congrats on you and your daughter deciding to do a 5K!

I participated in the Challenge last year, and I am doing it again this year with my DH, and my mother is participating as well. So if you have any questions about the race I can gladly answer them for you.

I'm following the Couch to 5K program to train, and I know what you mean about it being very difficult to run in the cold! The worst is how your chest feels like its on fire when you breathe.
But you still have plenty of time to find something that works for you and get into a groove. Your times are looking good so far. And just an encouraging note...whatever your normal time is will probably shorten by 2 or so minutes at the race due to the adreneline rush you get at the event. So doing it in approximately 41 minutes is not a bad pace at all!

Keep up the work!:thumbsup2

I LOVE your team name!!!!

DS said to me 'your starting to run already????'. Yes, I am not 16, and will need a LOT more prep time than you!!!! :rotfl:

amazingact21 -thanks for reading - and commenting :) I read your post when I saw it a few days ago in your signature!! It was great to read through your Exp Ev experience :) and after you said your time was better than you expected I had actually wondered if that's common. so thanks for clarifying that. That would definitely be nice!!! oh - are you starting another one soon for your next trip??

sjlupin - thanks for poppin over here too :) I hope you'll start a pretrip too??? lol. thanks for the compliments on the pic! It was actually taken just over a year ago but the only difference really is that my hair is longer so we really havn't changed too much since then - maybe another wrinkle or two. haha.
DD has been telling me I need to expand our cast introduction so maybe I'll do that if I can find some more recent pics that look good - she wants me to have a pic of each of us and say something about each of us. Good thing it's our slow time of the year for work so i can actually make the time to do that.

Thanks for following you two:thumbsup2

Kim - I'll have to think about a PTR. I did a trip report for one of our trips 10 years ago and my kids absolutely cherish it. They were only 6, 5 and 2.5 at the time and don't remember all the details, so reading it is so much fun for them.

Alicia - I am starting to read your TR from last May. I am enjoying it sooo much!! It is fun to read through your experiece since we were there at the same time and also did the race. I should take notes because I keep thinking of things I want to comment on. :goodvibes A few things that stand out:

* When we stayed at the Poly once we went to Kona for breakfast. I had read on and on about Tonga Toast so DH and I had it. I almost was afraid to admit it, but I didn't care for it! Neither did DH! It was sooo rich. Haha.

* I was also VERY nervous before the race. I thought the day would never end and time would come to go. We also left for the race earlier than planned - we just couldn't hang out at the resort any longer! But, it may not have been wise, becuase we felt like we had forever to wait in the parking lot. We walked around and went and watched the kids race. That was cute.

* I found the start so confusing. It was my first ever race and I didn't know what to expect. It will be better this year. We were in wave 3.

* Your kitty and puppy are SO cute!! We have 3 cats and a 1,5 year old dog that we rescused. :goodvibes

I found the Tonga Toast entry interesting too!!! So much that dd and I decided we may eat breakfast at Kona on our run day too. LOL. DD fell in love with the macadamia nut pancakes b/c she adores anything near to being Hawaiian and it's so hard to find macadamia nuts here unless you spend a fortune so she'll have that and I LOVE things that are rich so it's the tonga toast for me :mickeybar haha - that's the best pic i could find. no tonga toast to pick from ;) lol

Well, here's to hoping we all have nice early waves! 1 - 3 would be nice that's for sure!!!

Yeah, my time was about 3 minutes shorter than expected, so adrenaline definitely plays a huge factor into it.
I want to start a PTR for my May trip; I just have to finish my TR from almost a year ago first.:rotfl:

Thanks for reading! I wish I had brought a camera to take pictures of the race, because people ask me about AK at night, and I have nothing to show them.
I'm hoping the start is better this year. I heard that single runners go first, but I'm still hoping for Wave 2 or 3.

Ah, I wish I could have 3 cats, but our dog does terrorizes the poor felines. What kind of dog do you have?

Kona is a great breakfast choice. I'm like your DD and love all things Hawaiian. Those pancakes are the perfect race day meal for me.
Nobody in my party objected, so I have a 9:30am ADR for Kona on race morning. If you do decide to eat there, be sure to post your time and if I see you I'll say hello!

Hmm ... maybe I should ask DS is he wants to do Kona for breakfast on race day. :) We were just talking about what we want to do that day. Last year we went to packet pickup, checked out the sports complex for awhile (had lunch there) then just hung out at the resort and pool before going to AK. This year packet pickup will be quick - we won't bother going in to the Sports Complex (had to pay to get in and there really isn't alot to see), and with the race starting an hour later this year I don't think we can hang out that long waiting. So, we may do a morning at a park, then come back for a nap/rest time before the race.

Our dog is a rescue from Arkansas, we're not sure what he is! He and two littermates were found and put in a kill shelter. The amazing people that we adopted him from snatched them from the euthinasia list. He looks like a mix of shepard and something smaller - maybe beagle? He's only about 36 pounds. He is just awesome and we love him to pieces! We already had the 3 kitties when we brought him home. I've heard that it is easier bringing a dog in to a 'cat home' than vice versa. :confused3 It has gone pretty well!

I will DEFINITELY let you know if we do Kona for breakfast!! That would be so cool to run into you :thumbsup2 I'm thinking our time would be more around the 10 - 10:30 slot though b/c we'll want to sleep in due to being awake and starting a run at such an ungodly time of 9:30 pm or later!

ORRR, now that sjlupin mentioned it - maybe it would be a good chance to pop into a park and go home and have a nap later on??? I really don't see that napping will work out that well though? I'm thinking I'll be all prerace nervous and fidgity. Oh what on EARTH am I going to do to get through that whole day!??:scared::faint:
I guess I'll have to talk this day through with dh and figure out how we think we will best get through it. I sure wish it started earlier. Certainly not morning early. LOL as I'm NO morning person and like an evenin run but if they kept it at 8:30 or even 8pm it would have been really nice.

hey, can anybody tell me how to do multiple quotes in a message?? I'd love to be able to do that but I've never figured it out.

and PS - my dd thought my cast introductions should be better so I added a bit more info about each of us in my first post :)

The only way I know to do it is the cut and paste the text you want to quote and then use the Quote tags using the little icon above.

Love your new cast updates. :thumbsup2

I am really struggling with what to do on race day. I don't want to tire ourselves out too much, but I will go out of my mind waiting alllll day if we don't do something! I know I don't have to decide now, but I want to by our park tickets soon and need to decide whether to buy an extra day (it will be about $80, so want to be sure).

I was thinking we might to to DHS to try the new Star Tours and a few other things (we love RnR and Tot), but I just looked and it is a RED morning :scared1:

Ya, me too. I guess for us we have so many park days that we might as well just take it as easy as we can. Maybe I'll plan to be up late the night before and sleep in REALLY late. That might help make the day go by faster. For you i would think your right to try and get into a park b/c your not staying very long if i recall??

I still don't get the quote thing. I tried and it's not working for me :sad2: LOL

Oooh, yay! Page 2 :goodvibes Now I guess I really need to figure out how to post links before too many pages are up and people get lost. If anyone reads this that knows how to post links on my first post so people can click on it to get to my 2nd post, 3rd post etc... please educate me and I will be SOOO greatful!! :worship:

So, I guess I'm done for this week b/c Ive been a bit headachy for the last few days. DH wanted me to go outside for a jog tomorrow but I think I need to just stick with 3 jogs/week for now.

I STILL have that nagging cough too  the other day i had such a coughing fit at the beginning of my jog that i thought for sure it would be a bad run but i made it through and gave a little extra so I'm pushing forward against the odds.

Here's this past week

Jan 1st - C-5K wk3 - 3K in 20 min.

Jan 3rd - C-5K wk4 - 3.5K in 31 min. - I was feeling good on this day so went ahead and skipped to week 4 :thumbsup2

Jan 5th - C-5K wk4+ - 4K in 32.25 min - I pushed and added on after the program ended.

So far SO good!!! That's 10.5K in one week so I'm pretty happy with that:thumbsup2

This is just a mini update. lol I think I'll do little ones per week to keep myself accountable but then I'll update it so i can see a whole month at a glance too so the end of Jan I'll type out the whole months worth.

Also wanted to show off a Christmas gift i got!!!! It was from DMIL. It was actually a blue one but I like to keep things pretty basic (especially b/c i don't know what colours I'll be wearing just yet) so i returned it for black and I LOVE it!!! Take a peek at my hydration waist pack for the run...
Revenge2Bot_300.jpg

I know i probably won't need water b/c they will hand water out but i figure we have it just in case and won't have to carry around a bottle then.

LOL

Yes - we are only there from Friday 5/4 to Monday 5/7. We talked about it some last night and I think we have a plan. We really love EPCOT and our plan is to go there on Sunday (we have an ADR at LeCellier!!). But with the race being so late, we'll need to sleep a bit Sunday morning. So, we thought Saturday morning we'd go to EPCOT and 'do' Future World. We can hit Soarin and TT and whatever else, have lunch then go t packet pickup. Then we'll go to the resort to rest, go to the pool, get ready for the race, etc. Sunday we can just focus on WS. That way if we sleep in and head over late morning it won't be a big deal.

Woohoo! We are going to be in Florida in May too, we are quite excited. I always wanted to do a 5/10k in WDW but we never go at the right times in able to attend one. Good for your family! Don't worry about the fast mile. I have been running on the treadmill off and on for the past two years (almost every day for the past 2 months) and I still can't run a mile under 12 minutes. I figure as long as I do it, I'm ahead of the game. :thumbsup2

hey, can anybody tell me how to do multiple quotes in a message?? I'd love to be able to do that but I've never figured it out.

and PS - my dd thought my cast introductions should be better so I added a bit more info about each of us in my first post :)

At the bottom of each post there is 3 buttons. There is the quote button and beside that is the multi-quote button and then the last button which I'm not sure what that is. When you click the middle button it will turn orange. Click that button on all the posts you want to respond to and then at the bottom of the page click "Reply" and all the quotes should come up! :goodvibes

That sounds like a good plan Sandy :thumbsup2 I still havn't chatted with dh about it yet but I know once I start talking out loud about it it'll come tome. lol

Woohoo! We are going to be in Florida in May too, we are quite excited. I always wanted to do a 5/10k in WDW but we never go at the right times in able to attend one. Good for your family! Thanks for posting. So you will be coming after the 5th then?? what are the dates of your trip? Thanks for the fast mile tip. Dh now has it down to under 11 - his goal is to do 10 by the end of this month and I'm pretty sure he'll get there - he ONLY does a mile each day though so he's more determined to get the speed and not the longevity or whatever it would be called. I need to know I can do the whole 5k without collapsing so I can fit in the other things too. LOL. so our goals are different. DD - well - she's just been totally wimping out :( 2x's a week and only for a SLOW mile. I'll get on her case in a month or so to kick it up a notch.

So this is the test - hoping this multiple quote thing works :confused3
