Dessert

No dessert after meals unless somebody wanted to eat ice cream or something. We've never had an organized dessert time after dinner. Whoever wanted something else would just get it.

We rarely had dessert in our home growing up nor did we get dessert when dining out. My husband, on the other hand, growing up they always had some type of dessert after meals. His mom didn't is a good cook/baker and would always have something baked...cake, pie, cookies, or they would have ice cream. Of course, this was a big adjustment for my husband after we married. I'm not a great cook or baker...good, but not great.
We've been married over 30 years and to this date, he still gets something sweet to snack on within 15 minutes of finishing dinner. Then he'll usually have ice cream later. I just figure it's a "Missouri thing"...that's where his mom and dad are from.

Do you have dessert after dinner? Did you when you were a kid? I never had dessert as a regular thing after dinner as a kid or as an adult. Dessert to me was a treat saved for meals at restaurants and only then, occasionally.

We never had a dessert course BUT my father had the biggest sweet tooth and had to have his coffee and cake every single night.

My husband is not a dessert eater so the only time I make it is when company is over or during the holidays.

Unfortunately, I love dessert...:)

I am not really a dessert person...I guess growing up, my mom being the "menu maker" I got no dessert. Now that I am old, I am just used to not having it....probably better for me that way.

I do have a thing for chocolate. Many times in the evening, I am guilty of having red wine and dark chocolate when i try to chill out and relax.

Yes! We had dessert every night growing up - sometimes just yogurt, jello or fruit but other times ice cream or homemade cake. Every Sunday we would have a typical English Sunday dinner, and mom would always make something special like baked Alaska or Apple crumble. No one in my family is overweight, but that's genetics, nothing to do with our eating habits.

DH grew up in an Italian family where they had a three course meal every single night! When we go to the in-laws for dinner they still do this and it is SO much food, it takes hours!

Now I am a terrible cook, but I have something for dessert every night! DH will usually have ice cream, but I'll sometimes have fruit or a slice of cake. Tonight my dinner was two bowls of cereal but there will still be jello with raspberries for dessert!

Growing up Sundays there was something special for dessert like ice cream with toppings or cake. The rest of the week we might have fruit, pudding cup or popsicle but it wasn't every night.

I don't plan dessert here except on a special occasion but there's always some kind of ice cream treat plus cookies/candy in the house. I don't eat the stuff which is why I don't plan what is served.

Growing up I didn't have dessert every night. Occasionally during the summer we would walk up to Dairy Queen as a family, dogs included, and everybody would get something. Other than that it was mainly on holidays or leftovers we had from holidays. However when I nannied for my sister and lived with her and my b-i-l, they had dessert every night, so I've gotten into the habit now.

My kids get dessert every night after dinner, something small like a popsicle, a fun size candy bar or a handful of m&ms. DH and I usually have something sweet around 10 pm.

We pretty much never had dessert at home when I was growing up. When I ate at my grandmother's house, sometimes there was cake or pie, but it was just sort of there for snacking.

Now, Mrs. Tex and I rarely have dessert unless we're eating out, and as often or not we get it to go for later in the evening. We occasionally will have a small snack a little before bedtime, but it's not always sweet.

I love dessert. Unfortunately, it loves me too, so I get to wear it long term, if'n ya know what I mean.

Is that code for something????:rotfl: Dessert is just such a foreign concept to me. Heck, some nights they are lucky they get dinner:rotfl:

I'm glad there are few other people here for whom dessert is a "course" that you just always have. That's how we are. If I don't eat something sweet at the end, then it just doesn't feel right. It may just be a small bowl of ice cream or a cookie or a chocolate or banana, but a meal for me is incomplete without some bit of sweetness at the end. When we go to other people's houses and they don't do that, I'm so distracted because I'm wondering "When's dessert???". It is a genuine craving that feels physical.

That makes it sound like I am probably as big as a boat, but I'm not. I don't overeat the main course and I just drink water. I guess in that way I do save room for dessert.

I never really realized that so many people don't have dessert regularly.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so dessert isn't something I ever even think about. In the summer, if we're grilling, I enjoy some fresh fruit after dinner. Otherwise, no.

My husband keeps ice cream in the fridge, which he tends to eat late at night.

We have dessert every night, but never after breakfast or lunch. Dessert is almost always homemade, even if it's just chocolate pudding (cornstarch pudding, it's like Jell-o Heat & Serve but without using a mix). If I want to have a cocktail or some wine, I have that for my dessert, but I still make something for the rest of the family. Sunday dinner we always make something special like a layer cake.

That's why I started the thread. It was a shock to me that people have dessert every night. I guess it's just all in the way you were raised or possibly a regional thing. Like I said earlier, some nights dinner is optional so dessert doesn't even hit the radar:rotfl:

Some nights for me dessert IS dinner :rotfl:. Especially if my husband is out of town or working late. Quite often in those instances dinner is chocolate shake or malt :drinking1.

The only thing we have after dinner is fruit, unless it's a birthday or holiday (or special celebration, like graduation.)

That's how I was brought up. My husband has no sweet tooth at all, and I'd just as soon keep my son away from sugar/butter/flour as long as I can.
