Designing a kitchen

I would think about how you are going to use different areas
For example if you are going to make coffee- have it work where there is some way to store coffee, mugs and space for the maker
Have outlets for the mixer , food processor , etc... close to where you will store them.
I love my instant hot water. I use it every day. These are not expensive and are great if you make instant oatmeal, grits, tea, coffee, hot choc...
Also good for cleaning
I enjoy my big deep drawers like pp mentioned
I also like my pull out shelves

I don't use my warming drawer like I thought I would
I wish I had gotten a double oven instead

You mentioned a couple of things I hadn't thought of thanks. I am currently designing a new kitchen to replace the old horrible one I have with its disintegrating drawers no storage space and disgusting brown tiles. So I want a larder unit, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier. The room was extended with a 3 metre by 3 metre extension with an arch into the original kitchen which was 2.5 by 2.5. So an american style fridge freezer can go in the original part of the kitchen. This is part of a three tiered attack on my house
1 the kitchen is no good so (even though I live alone) its being replaced with a decent family kitchen (make it great for a solo will not make the house sellable and I might want to sell it in a few years.
2 Re slab the garden remove the side shed which has a hole in the roof and take down the other shed which is never used and put a greenhouse on it. and in the bit of the garden that has stone on it remove stone put a good layer of top soil and turf it (a bit of lawn would look nice)
3 Take the bathroom down to the floorboards, replacing the couple that don't feel right. have a wet room bathroom with underfloor heating.

Fun year ahead I think.
oh yes on the nice new patio (might use old slabs they are in good condition but are not laying right) put a small chicken coop and have some chickens!!!!!!!
I have been spring cleaning the house to the point that I will (by the weekend actually be able to park my car in the garage for the first time EVER.

My current kitchen is HUGE, but it isn't as functional as it could be. Problems:

- It's a long galley kitchen with a penninsula/bar dividing it from the breakfast area. It's really more counterspace than anyone needs. I have cabinets galore, but I'd rather store things in a nice big pantry rather than in the back of dark cabinets. I have a walk-in pantry now, but it's poorly designed (and shares with the washing machine). Also, when you have so much space, replacing the countertops (or anything else) costs a fortune.

- The penninsula/bar is deep, and I can't reach the back corner; thus, clutter accumulates constantly. If I were taller and had longer arms, this might not be an issue.

- I have a desk, but it's in the middle of the counterspace. It would've been much better placed at the far end of the kitchen, out of the way. In our new house, I don't plan to have a desk at all; instead, I'm going to have a small study/computer room just off the kitchen. This is just personal preference.

- We constantly have school papers, mail, keys, sunglasses, you name it piled on the bar. No matter how many times I point out that we have a desk for these things, they end up right there in the middle of everything. Drives me nuts.

We're planning a house right now, and I've put a great deal of thought into the kitchen. It's going to be a 10x10 U-shaped kitchen with an attached eating area to the left of the kitchen -- not nearly so grand as the things some of you are describing. Details:

- The pantry is as important to us as the kitchen. You've heard that thing about how we use 20% of our stuff 80% of the time? Well, under that theory, we want a small, clutter-free kitchen that holds the 20% neatly, without stuff, stuff, stuff crammed into drawers . . . and a HUGE pantry for the occasional-use stuff. Our pantry/mudroom's going to be 14 x 8 -- it'll be the connector between the garage and the kitchen.

It'll have floor-to-ceiling shelves on one side, and in the middle of those shelves'll be a small (4 foot?) workspace -- a place to set down bags of groceries, to measure out a cup of flour, to let bread rise, to keep dessert 'til after the meal, to run a crockpot in an out-of-the-way place. In addition to food, I'll store my canning equipment, my platters, my seldom-used appliances, etc. out there too.

On the other side, it'll be mudroom: Two closets and an indentation for a short chest in the middle. This'll be a place to drop mail, keys, etc. I'm hoping that since we'll walk past this BEFORE we reach the kitchen, it'll actually work as a catch-all spot. One of these two closets will lock (for guns and other things that we don't want accessible to just anyone walking through).

Because the pantry/mudroom'll be much cheaper to build than the kitchen, this'll be a money-saver. Basic shelves don't cost what good-quality cabinets cost.

Windows in a pantry are bad (light is an enemy of stored food), so I want auto-turn-on lights in the pantry/mudroom.

- We have no desire for the 6-burner stoves or double dishwashers that some of you have described. We don't have any problem with our standard sized appliances. We are sometimes short on fridge space, so we may put in an under-the-cabinet drink fridge that'd open towards the eating area -- that'd leave fridge space for just food.

- I'm working through the details of the kitchen by imagining myself putting together a common meal. I'd reach here for the pots, fill them with water there . . . how many steps to the stove? Where do I reach for the spices? Where are my knives? If I'm serving a casual buffet, where am I placing the desserts? If I'm going to the refrigerator for a drink, where do I set my glass while I pour the milk? My husband and I tend to take turns cooking; we rarely cook together, but someone else might need to consider whether two butts'll fit into the kitchen.

- I want a pot filler above the stove.

- Rather than two wall ovens, I want the double-oven range that has a shorty oven above a full-sized oven. I think I'd like that because the shorty oven would heat up so much faster, and most of the time I cook "short things": pizza, rolls, casseroles. The double-oven range is more expensive than a standard range, but it's much less expensive than a cooktop and double ovens.

- I want drawers rather than standard cabinets. This'd make it so much easier to get to things in the back of the cabinet.

- I want few upper cabinets. I can't reach them anyway. Instead, the U-shaped cabinets'll be open to the eating area on one side. But I do want my upper cabinets to reach the ceiling -- no dust catchers up top, please.

- I want one big sink. I rarely wash dishes by hand anyway, but when I do they're often my largest pots or biggest pans. I have no desire for a sprayer; I've never used it in my whole life. I would, however, like to have a built-in soap dispenser.

- I'm planning to have an electrical outlet INSIDE one cabinet so we can have a small TV INSIDE a TV cabinet. I don't want anything at all on my counters.

- A sticking point: I can't see our new house kitchen in anything except white cabinets. My husband can only imagine it in wood tones. Gotta compromise here. While everyone else wants granite, granite, granite, I'm not so sold on the stuff -- for the kitchen, that is, I want it for my bathroom vanity. For the kitchen, I'm quite taken with the recycled glass countertops. I don't know what kind of backsplash I want, but I know that I don't want it to be trendy; I don't want it to look outdated five years after it's put in.

- I'm definitely planning a space for cookbooks in my kitchen!

The prep island is a good idea, but I would add a fridge dedicated to beers if I could!!! ; )

I'd love a pot filler above the stove too. Other than that, it's huge and functional and we're so happy with it.

Thanks all! Loads of great ideas here! I did have to giggle at the thought of two ovens or an extra sink or dishwasher. Not that I can't see the value in all, but when we moved in we had 6 cupboards and 6 drawers in the whole kitchen. We ended up surrendering one of those precious cupboards to put a dishwasher in, lol. WHOLE new world of kitchen opening up after 16 years in the house!

I absolutely adore my kitchen. :cloud9:
I already said I don't like stainless or granite, lol...but that's for me. I do think your kitchen is striking and am happy for you. I'm always happy for people when they get house stuff they want. :)

I especially like the (don't know what to call it!) white paneling on the stool side of the sink area. Very cute. :)

These were before the back splash and microwave shelf were finished but you get the idea. I don't think the pics do it justice. I absolutely adore my kitchen. :cloud9:

Wow, yours is very similar to mine!

I re-did last year. If you take these pictures, change the island to bi-level, move the oven to the right and put the sink there, that's my kitchen. I also added a bunch of cabinets, including a pantry in the corner behind the photographer.

What I love (I was VERY limited in space):

-pull out trash next to the sink. How did I ever live without that? I didn't have room for recycle bin as well.

-island. Mine is prep only, and even though pricier, I love having the bi-level island. It hides the prep counter from view, and we use it a lot.

-pantry. Wow. I can't even begin to fill it.

-fridge. Double doors on top and freezer drawer. DD made me get it, and I love it.

- I'm mixed on my stove. Didn't do a wall oven because of the loss of counter space. I did a slide in with the controls in the front. Love the look, pain to keep clean.

Have fun!

I think it's beautiful! What size sink is that?

We are going through a renovation. Slide out pantry shelves. Everyone should have them!!! They are my new favorite thing so far.

My biggest issue is having plenty of counter space on either side of the sink. I have seen so many kitchen designs where the main sink is on an island facing the family room and not only is there not much counter space there the sink is oriented to one side with NO counter space at all on one side.

:goodvibes Thank you! It's called batten board. Our fridge is Titanuim but the stove etc are stainless. Titanium doesn't finger print like SS. :thumbsup2 The counters are Silestone. It's from Italy, thinner than granite, smooth, and less shiny. But man, just as $$$. :scared1:

Thank you :) I don't know what size sink but it's deeper than your average sink which is really nice.

Don't you love the bottom freezer fridge? I'll never go back. These don't show the dishwasher and cabinets behind the island. Your kitchen sounds great! :thumbsup2 Ours is very wide and we like to call it a 6 butt kitchen. You can easily fit 6 butts in it without touching each other while cooking. :rotfl2:

Walk in pantry that's 10 x 10, at least....and has an extra fridge and freezer in it.

when we remodeled we did it on our own, extremely limited budget:thumbsup2 we went the Ikea route- used the kitchen planners and everything! (in store)
We had to stick with the original footprint, but we love how it came out!
Ikea has decent quality cabinets, etc for a much lower price. We had a kitchen that needed updating from approx. 1973, and very badly laid out...ugh! what I love best about it is (everything:lovestruc)
We took down a wall between our small dining room and the kitchen, and created a large counter/ breakfast bar with 24" stools. I love this counter! I can prep food here, and see the livingroom tv while cooking- that counter that functions as a breakfast bar and large counter is my fave!:thumbsup2
We built a small island in the center with our slide in stove in it,and now have a work triangle with sink/stove,and fridge.
We bought our corian type counters from Lowes, the rest is Ikea- love the big drawers instead of cabinets below, and the slow close hinges!
Total cost was less than 7k to completely gut and redo the 2 rooms, with furniture and flooring!:thumbsup2

Wow, some of you have such cool ideas. I was just trying to stay simple and low cost but I love some of this! :)

I love a large single sink. That's what my grandmother had growing up, and now it's what I have in the apartment. I can fit my whole crock pot in the sink, cutting board, large stock pot and anything else where I don't have to create a balancing act trying to clean it.
It's even worse at my aunt's house because she doesn't even have a sprayer. Thankfully her dishwasher is amazing, and can clean anything. At least it's big enough to hold the stock pot.

I also love the idea of a pot filler.

rwdavis2: Your old kitchen does not look functional at all. I know it creates the "triangle" to an exact isosceles, but it just doesn't look well.
