deposit for onsite hotel?

Does anyone know what kind of deposit is required for a room only reservation? Do you pay for your entire hotel stay upfront, or is it a one night deposit? (Not for a package vacation) Thanks a bunch!

The deposit is one night's rate plus any taxes or fees. The remainder is due when you check out.

And if the rate changes during your stay (as it has for ours), it seems to be the average of the rates.
