What happens on departure day? Does Disney transport luggage and handle check-in?

Departure day as in the day you board the ship and depart on your cruise? Or departure day as in the day you get off the ship? The terms usually used are embarkation day (day you get on the ship) and debarkation day (day you get off the ship).

I'm assuming you mean debarkation day and are also referring to being transported back to the airport and that you are using DLC buses to return to the airport. You can either keep your bags and do express walkoff at 7:30am, or you can put your luggage out in the hall by 8pm the night before and the room stewards will collect the bags to be moved to the terminal building for you. If you choose that option, when you disembark, bags will be organized by character luggage tags you are given the day before to place on your bags. You will locate your bags in that character area and join the line to go through customs. Once through customs, you proceed to the DCL bus, and your luggage will be stored under the bus. When you get to the airport, you are responsible for taking your bags to your airline to be checked in.

As for checking in for your flight, you are also responsible for doing that yourself. If flying Southwest, I'd recommend purchasing Early Bird so you don't have to worry about it.

DCL used to offer onboard airline check-in, whereby they would check you in for your homebound flight and also take care of any baggage you would be checking for the flight home, so you wouldn't have to worry about your luggage between the time you placed it outside of your stateroom the night before disembarking and its arrival at baggage claim at your home airport. That was great. Unfortunately, they haven't offered the service since reopening. #Covidcustomerservicedowngrade

Onboard airline check-in was offered on Dream last week. I didn't utilize it, but it was on the options on my check-in and was discussed on the disembarkation materials.

Really?! So they're doing the luggage check in for guests again? If so, that's wonderful news!
