Departing from Halifax & customs ?

If leaving from Halifax - on a US carrier - will I go through customs in Halifax before departing or will I only go through customs when I land in the USA?

I'm trying to decide on certain flights and the connection times are tight. However, if I'm clearing customs in Halifax, there is less of any issue.

If you are flying directly into the US from Halifax, you will clear customs in Halifax, however if have a layover in Canada, then you will not go through customs in Halifax.
