Dentist pulling baby teeth in a child......any experience?

When DS15 was 12, he had two baby teeth molars on his lower jaw pulled. The permanent teeth were both growing at a sharp angle, and not only would the permanent teeth have "pushed" the other teeth out of place, it would have taken years for the baby teeth to fall out on their own, because the permanent teeth weren't growing in "under" the baby teeth. We had them pulled on a Wednesday; and spacers put in on the following Tuesday; and he had the spacers for about 3 months while the permanent teeth grew in - perfectly straight.

When I was younger, I had my two baby 'canines' pulled as the adults were trying to come in, and were being pushed forwards because the baby teeth hadn't come out yet (nor were they close at all to coming out). I had the lidocaine, didn't hurt at all during the procedure (was a bit sore later on, but nothing outlandish). On the flip side of the coin that many of you have experienced, I never needed braces even with having some baby teeth having to be pulled. Thankfully I got my mom's teeth :worship: and NOT my dad's

Hope that helps!

I had a bunch of baby teeth pulled when I was a kid--my mouth is very small, so there wasn't room for all of my adult teeth in the end. My dentist was also an orthodontist, and he pulled the baby teeth as part of the preparation for me having braces.

It really was no big deal at all. I got novocaine shots, and the baby teeth just popped right out. I literally couldn't feel a thing and asked the dentist if it was over already. The only scary part for a kid is the needle for the shot. So if your child has a fear of shots, then some nitrous might be a good idea, though I didn't have any.

Having baby teeth isn't anything like having an adult tooth pulled at all. A couple of years ago I had a molar pulled as an adult, and it made all sorts of scary noises coming out and took a while. The baby teeth were really a non-event.

The tooth fairy was always generous with me when I had a baby tooth pulled though. ;)

Great point!! She usually leaves $2 in our house, we might have to bump that up a bit. ;)

DS went thru this at 8 as well. Ortho recommended 6 baby teeth be pulled so the teeth that had already come in could move to their correct position (he was seeing uneven wear on the adult teeth already). We did one side of his mouth one week, and the other 2 weeks later. That allowed them to numb only one side of the mouth at a time. Insurance paid for Novacane (sp?) but not "laughing gas" and I paid for that in the end out of pocket - that was a good move. It took about 20 minutes to get everything numb, then maybe 5 to get the teeth out. The worst part for my son was that the numbness took a LONG time to wear off - like until bedtime. He wasn't prepared for it to last that long. Otherwise recovery was not a real problem.

FWIW, this did buy us time for his jaw to grow before going to braces, as the ortho had hoped. And in the end they did not need to pull any adult teeth - pretty good for a kid with a very very crowded mouth. But let's not talk about how much all of this cost....

Good luck!

Teeth...they can be a real PITA! I'm dreading if my kids need braces...so far 10 y.o. ds and 7 y.o. dd are ok!

Bumping this to say that both my kids will need braces! 11 y.o. ds will get them within the next 3-4 months. My 8 y.o. dd however has some issues. Ortho. says she should have her 2 bottom caninies removed so the the permanent teeth that are between them adn the 2 middle front bottom teeth can move into place. Also she will need an expander in about a year or so as her mouth is so small.
I'm afraid to have her get her teeth pulled, she's never even had a cavity so she is really freaked out about having them pulled. Her 2 permananet teeth that are next to her 2 middle front teeth are behind the middle front teeth(permanent ones) and the caninies(baby).
There is no space whatsoever for the other 2 teeth to move into place. Guess we'll have to get them pulled :o(

My son had 4 baby teeth pulled out this summer. As a previous poster said..easy peasy. My insurance sent him to an oral surgeon who likes to meet the kids once before he pulls the teeth but my ds was so ok with it that the Dr pulled them on the consult..he did that with my older dd also. Gave them a shot of novacaine, let it take effect and then one quick pull per tooth and they were out. He went out with his friends as soon as we got home:thumbsup2 Good luck!

We've been through just about everything with my children's teeth (missing, deformed enamel, impacted molars, braces, etc...), and by comparison getting a baby tooth pulled was a total non-event.

My dentist didn't even bother with novocaine or gas or anything. He just reached into my daughter's mouth with his plier-thingys and gave it a tug. She blinked and said, "Is it out yet?" So he showed it to her! :lmao:

My husband really grumbled about having to pay for that. He said next time, if the kids need a tooth pulled, he's pulling it himself!

Luckily it never came to that. :rotfl:

I have had 21 teeth pulled over the years (all but two of my baby teeth, four adult molars to make room and four wisdom teeth). It stated at age 8 because I had not lost any baby teeth and my adult teeth were starting to come down in odd places.

My Dentist and Ortho consulted back and forth to create a plan for extractions and spacers and of course braces down the line.

I always only had topical and injectable medication for the extractions (with the exception of my wisdom teeth). All my baby teeth still had roots. The process of extractions is fairly easy and quick. My Dentist numbed me up, took the pliers and did two twists then pulled. He always said "snap, crackle, pop" as he was doing it because that is what is sounded like. It is the after care that can get complicated because of dry socket. I was lucky and never had any problems but I know some who have.

Seems young to me to start pulling teeth. my dd is 8 1/2 and still has all her baby teeth except for 2 that she lost about 4 months ago. We've spoken with two dentists, and both of them have said that its not unusual.
