Good luck! Not sure if you are going to a new dentist or not, but just FYI, my consult with the oral surgeon costs me $200.00...

I'm just chiming in with my recollections of DS's implant. He was born missing one (thank God not 7) adult tooth. the implant was put in when he was 16 or 17 (25 now). The first visit the "rod" was put in and I had to bring him in once a month for a quick check of the area - it was around 6 months when the implant was put in. As far as pain - he really didn't have big complaints - of course this was the kid that had 3 surgeries. The place he was missing the tooth - we could have gone with a bridge - but at his age that just didn't make sense. Insurance would not pay and I even challenged their first refusal of coverage - but no dice. It was pricey - what the OP posted didn't surprise me at all.

Okay i go tomorrow morning for my consult for the veneers... I am a little nervous. I dont want him to say they cant do it or that its gonna cost about $5000! I dont have that much money:( I have heard it will be alot. I just keep thinking that he will say that they cant do anything:( my brother had the same problem with his teeth only my mom fixed his

my ds is 16, has the front tooth missing (one next to the two big ones) anyhoo, just saw an orthodontist that said BRACES then an implant,m well that went over like lead.....I mean he is in HS and I get it....braces???anyhoo, option is clear ones BUT he also needs implant afterward. Right now teeth have shifted a bit to the side where the open space was. I was PRAYING and hoping that they could do cosmetic veneers for his gag (which actually runs on teh dh side in addition to the missing tooth)
SO, I am gonna try for a second opinion and see what they say...........Id rather invest in cosmetic then surgery for him, he was/is so against braces and the implant....

well they said if i didnt like the look of the wax up for the veneers its got to be the braces route and I dont want to go that way:(

Two words: Medical Tourism

So many medical and dental procedures are so much cheaper outside of the United States.

Some insurance companies have even been willing to waive deductibles and even pay for plane fare. Ask. Show them the math and see what they say.

Perhaps not your idea of a perfect vacation, but it gets the needed work done without totally destroying the wallet.

I wanted to chime in here. I had a very difficult procedure done. I lost my two front teeth when I was 12 in an accident. I had a bridge attached to my existing teeth when I was around 16. Was supposed to last a few years. Each year my dentist was amazed it was still there. 25 years later, the darn thing finally gave. By this time I had severe bone loss. I went to several oral surgeons and they all turned me away, procedure was too complicated, I had too much bone loss.
I finally found a wonderful surgeon who was cutting edge. He was able to do the procedure. He removed bone from my lower jaw for the first graft. 4 months later I went back and at that time I had the cadaver bone graft. 4 months later, the posts implanted, later I finally got my teeth put in. I had a 4th surgery as my gums were still very high and you could see the top of the post.
During the time of the surgery I wore a partial denture it was so uncomfortable. These surgeries were not covered at ALL by my insurance and the price was through the roof....Four times what others seem to have been quoted, however as I already said, my surgery was extremely difficult, and I might possibly be facing one more.

Regarding the anesthesia, in an effort to save money, I seriously considered not being put under. I have a high pain tolerance and am pretty willing to take quite a bit in order to save money, ultimately I had the anesthesia. In hindsight, I really do not think I could have done it without and was very surprised it was discussed as optional. However it was offered early on, and I think after it was seen how extensive the surgery would be, I doubt he would have done it without putting me under.

Here is the bottom line. Although I could have bought a new car for what I paid and it took well over year, several very painful days, it was SO worth it. My surgeon is a miracle worker in my mind. They look great and better yet, they are comfortable and I can eat anything. I consider it an investment in me. Would have been nice however if even one dime was covered by insurance.

I'm sorry, but this is a really, really BAD idea. Most of these kind of procedures are done in Mexico or other countries with substandard facilities and doctors who couldn't get liscensed in the US. You are not going to save any money unless you go somewhere that offers substandard care. Too many people have died trying to save a buck for me to ever consider something like that.

My mom is currently undergoing a mouthful of implants. I think she is getting 12 of them. Her bill is going to be about $20,000 which is cheap because it is at a dental school. Had she gone elsewhere, she would have been looking at about $40-50k

The implant price that you were quoted is a close match to what I am paying. But I had to pay $400 for a temporary tooth, since the tooth in question is in the front of my mouth. Plus, the surgeons price did not include the actual crown that will go over the implant post. That is another $1000, but I think my insurance pays 40% of that. You may want to find out if there is a separate charge for the crown.

ditto, there are charges afterthe initial post is done. Realistically, you are looking at $5,000. I wa s willing to pay, but needed alot of bone grafting.... come to find out, it only had a 70% chance of taking, sounds high unless i fell in the 30% range!! I was looking at 2 teeth, so $10,000 and decided against getting it done. I also had very mixed reviews when I asked people... many were so pleased, but many had chronic pain issues. It is a no win situation, take the risk, or wear a denture... err... wish i just had healthier teeth. My mom ended up with dentures in her late 40's, they told her she had soft teeth. I am praying, i don't follow in her footsteps on that. good luck with your decisin.

Medicine was not invented in the United States. Pioneering work has been done by doctors around the world.

Modern dental implants are based upon work originally done by the Swede Per-Ingvar Branemark. His work led to the founding of Nobel Biocar which produces dental implants.

The Wikipedia article on Dental Tourism notes, with regard to costs,
"With the international nature of some products and brands it is possible to make a valid [cost] comparison. For instance, the same porcelain veneer made in a lab in Sweden can be as much as 2500 AUD in Australia, but only 1200 AUD in India. The price difference here is not explainable by reference to the material cost." (2500 Australian dollars = 2263 US dollars and 1200AUD=1086USD)

With an implant and crown costing two to three times the cost of a veneer you are looking at thousands of dollars difference. So if you are going to have multiple implants and crowns done in the United States, you could pay for your trip to WDW with the difference by having the work done overseas.

For vision correction surgery, the popular LASIK procedure was developed in Colombia by a Spanish doctor. This was after the Ukrainian doctor Svyatoslav Fyodorov (then in the old USSR) pioneered vision correction surgery by inventing the radial keratotomy procedure.

Plastic surgery has taken off in many Latin American countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Colombia. The surgeons there are highly experienced.

Some of the premier cardiac care in the world is performed in Bangalore, India by Dr Devi Shetty and his team of surgeons at his Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital. Surgeons who do a procedure more frequently tend to have better outcomes with their patients. In cardiac care, better outcomes mean more patients go home alive.

Medical care in the United States is outrageously expensive. It does not mean it is inherently better. Overseas you will not have the same options for litigation if things do go wrong. It is something each person must consider when deciding if overseas medical care is right for them.

Do research. If you are not comfortable with the idea, then so be it. But traveling for medical care is an affordable way to receive excellent care for many.

Okay I got hit with sticker shock today! $6600 is what the price is for 6 veneers, zoom whitening and his office visits. ITs a very large amount of money when you think its for teeth but its a small amount of money to pay to make my mouth beautiful and make me want to smile. I just cant think of taking that money away from my family but getting it done would let me be the person i want to be inside... outgoing, confident and loud lol. have a gap in your front teeth has made me shy and not wanting to smile. so looking at it like that-yes its worth the money. I dont have much in savings and dont really know how we are going to pay. Insurance doesnt cover it at all. I am thinking of a credit card-which goes against everything that i have been doing in the last 2 months to get our debt paid off... but i need it done for me. I could postpone disney another year but my kids are so excited and really want to go. I am thinking to put some money down, charge the rest on the dentists chase health payment plan thing and just pay monthly as much as we can afford. I dont want to look back in 10 or 20 years and think I should have done this sooner. Y ou dont realize how much your teeth mean to you until you dont have them or are embarrassed of them. I want to be happy and want to smile finally! I go 2morrow night for my zoom whitening take home kit. Then I go back in about 2 weeks to get the temporaries put on then 1 week after that i get the veneers! So painful but yet so worth it:)

Only you know what you can afford and how important it is to you. I know how important my smile is to me, so I would never tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do.

If you can afford the payments on the dental work and still take your children to Disney, I would do it. I have always had a hard time "saving" for things, but if I have a bill, I PAY IT. So for lots of things, that has been the only way I would ever be able to do it, because the money is always needed somewhere when it is in the savings account. Sounds awful to admit, but it is the truth.

You said your children are excited about the trip, so because they know, I could not take that away from them so I could have a prettier smile. If they didn't already know, you might have been able to put off for another year, but not now.

Sounds like you already made your mind up what you are doing and the schedule for the work to be done is set. Best of luck and I hope that your results are better than what you have imagined!!!!!!!!!

I just got off the phone with the dentists office and i have been approved for the chase dental plan-line of credit type thing- so that will more than cover the work and your right- if i save for it, it may never happen but if I have a bill-itll get paid! THanks for your support and i know no one could tell me what i should or shouldnt do but i thought that i could get an opinion on if it was worth it or not

:lovestruc:goodvibes I am so happy for you! :goodvibes:lovestruc

Remember to smile big in your photos when your at Disney!!!

Just wanted to post an update where I am with the implant situation.

I received a pm from a dis'er saying that possibly my medical insurance would cover the bone graft portion because her 's did. So I contacted my medical insurance provider and they called me back today. Sounds like my insurace company is new to this or at least the girl didn't have any definate answers.

She told me to have my original dentist fill out a pre-auth form stating that the need for this surgery is due to a medical condition (sjogren's syndrom) and they would go from there. She said that was the first step and then it would go to a board for approval. I called my regular dentist and spoke to the office. They were very helpful and told me to get a statement on my rheumatologist letterhead stating that I have this disease and that I am currently on medication to treat it so that they could send it with their pre-auth form.

Called rheumy today and they will get that out to me this afternoon. So that is where we are at. Not sure where it will go from here, but either way, it can't cost me MORE, it just might save me some money! I am trying not to get too excited, but I can't help myself. I know I will need another implant for the other bottom post I have very soon and the 7 root canals on my upper teeth are about 10-12 yrs old. The oral surgeon said those are probably good for another 5 years tops if I am lucky and then those will need implants or bridges.... So this first implant might set the stage for insurance to pay for some more work in the future. Having this disease might actually benefit me? Well, not actually, because if I didn't have it, my teeth wouldnt be as they are.

Please send pixie dust my way, this could be a life saver for me.... I have literally been losing sleep over the cost of this implant and how much more work I am going to have to have done in the years to come. I feel so bad that so much $$$ comes out of my familys pocket every month for my meds (just the copay on my prescriptions are about $200 month). I am grateful to have insurance and I know it could be worse.

I will post again when I hear back from somebody!

(((((HUGS))))) I have Sjogren's also (due to Lupus) and I am in need of an implant. Can't bring myself to pay $5000 for it:sad2: Maybe someday!!!

I hope you can get your insurance to cover it. I never understood why dental and medical were seperate since teeth are a part of your body and important for good health:confused3

DISNEYLOVER--

what do you mean when you say post? A post is either a titanium post implanted in your jaw (implants) or a stainless steel post cemented in the root of your tooth after a root canal has been completed.

An implant either has a crown attached to it or it has an overdenture that snaps over top of it.

Kinda confused on your procedure? What are the tooth numbers that are existing or need to be replaced?

I would request a treatment plan from your Dentist as well.

Any more info. to share?

It is tooth #22.

I have a treatment plan from the oral surgeon, that is where the dollar figures came from in my original post.

I currently have a stainless steel post cemented into the root of the tooth that I have had a root canal on. My denture snaps onto the two teeth (22 & 19?) that have the posts cemented in them. All other teeth were extracted.
All this was about 10 years ago.

One day back in October, I removed the denture to clean and the post was stuck in the o-ring in the denture leaving a hole in my jaw (Eeeek!) It didnt hurt but was startling none the less. It was recemented, lasted about 3 weeks, recemented and so far it hasn't come loose but the dentist says it needs to me extracted and an implant placed. The cement is only a temporary fix.

Went to the oral surgeon for consultation, he agreed it needs an implant, the tooth is breaking down and the tissue around it is irritated.

I think I answered everything, I hope. More thoughts?:goodvibes
