We have a 44 y/o man, father of two, married that lives in my area hospitalized/on a respirator and going to be put on an "external lung machine" whatever that is. It's very serious for him and no mention that he had any other factors. Heard that on the local news last night.

If you want the technical medical terms:
A respirator is a Type of mask used to protect people from breathable hazards- anything from dust to fumes to airborne diseases.
A ventilator is a machine that pushes air in and out of the lungs of a person who is unable to breathe for themselves.
An external lung machine is how ECMO is often described. This machine is a lung bypass. The blood is pulled from the body into the machine where carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is delivered. The machine then pumps the blood back into the patient’s body. This allows a patient’s lungs to rest and, hopefully, recover.
