Deluxe hotel Fitness Facilities free to all guests?

I just read my Mousesavers newsletter and read that starting in June, the fitness facilities at Deluxe resorts and OKW and SSR will be free to all guests staying at those resorts. If you are staying at another resort, the cost will be $12.

This means, you no longer have to be a DVC member or have spa services to have free access.

Not that I think the gyms will be overcrowded now, but wouldnt that diminish one of our few perks as DVC? I wonder if they will take it off our Perk Pages?

I doubt they'll take it off the perks pages.

So, if I am staying at VWL, I get to use the fitness center for free and If I am staying at WL, I still get to use it for free, correct?

I doubt they will be overcrowded. I've never seen them full.

Maybe this will bring in some added business for spa services.

I doubt it will have much impact.

The sort of person who uses fitness equipment on vacation will use it regardless of cost. There probably isn't a huge pool of people who don't regularly work out who say "well, its free, I think I'll try the Stairmaster" and spend more than five minutes on the darn thing. Particularly at Disney where us couch potatoes do more walking than we ever have before anyway. On the other hand, if you are the type of person who needs to lift weights three times a week, you'll do it whether its free or not.

The only place it might have impact is teens - and I don't know if they are allowed to use the facilities. If they are and it becomes an issue, rules about age can be implimented.

I dont think it will have an impact on equipment availability either.

But technically, "free use of the fitness facilities" should no longer be touted by DVC as a member perk.

First of all- I am doubtful that this was "free." Our dues almost certainly include some payment for the upkeep of these fitness areas and their equipment, so we were not charged to use them or that would be double charging...

If I am correct about this, I would hope that now that Disney is opening the place up to all guests for "free" that they are including a charge to cash paying guests in the room rate to help cover the costs of the place...and if they are doing this to every room I expect that our dues should be diminished some as well....

I may have to dash off a letter to DVC to clarify this....
