Is it possible to get around the $100 per ticket change fee by showing up at the airport and trying to go stand by? I know probably not, but just asking to see if anyone knows.

Thanks!

Yes, we did this in January from MCO to SFO. The night before we decided that we wanted to get home earlier (don't ask me why) so we called Delta and checked it out. They said that there are no guarantees but that it "looked good" (there were lots of empty seats on the flights that we wanted). She gave us some flight times and we showed up early, never had any problem at all. We had a layover with a change in planes in Dallas and again had no trouble. They didn't charge us anything. Of course, you run the risk of a plane being full, but its my understanding that if there is a seat same-day, you can have it at no charge.

Hope this helped!

If you do it on the same day as your original flight you can stand by and get a different flight (assuming there are seats available). As Peter Pan Fan mentioned, you can call Delta to see what the availablitity for other flights looks like to get an idea of which flights you may have a shot at. I've been successful at getting a standby seat on oversold flights - but if you are travelling with others I wouldn't risk it - you wouldn't want to get split up. If you stand-by and a seat becomes available they can make you take it and you lose your orig flight (seen this happen at busy times). If you want to fly on a different day stand by won't work.

Not sure what kind of tickets you have - but some special fares and frequent flier tickets may not allow you to fly stand by. You can check with Delta to see what type of fare you have and if there are any restrictions.
