For my trip in May, I picked a flight out of my local airport (CHO) and specifically wanted an afternoon return flight. I found what I wanted and went to the airport to get my tickets because I was using up a few delta dollars. Of course I have learned to check reservations regularly on any airline because of the likelyhood of time changes. It was no different this time. Delta changed my flights, all of the flight times, for the trip. The flight down was only changed by 20 minutes so that was no big deal. But the flight back now had an 8 hour layover in Atlanta!!! Seems that they had eliminated the afternoon flight that I desired. I now wouldn't get home until late at night. Well I decided that that layover was just not going to happen.
I went to the local airport to talk to a real person about my options. I decided that the only way I could get home in the afternoon was to fly into another airport a bit farther away (RIC). Well they could do nothing for me without an extra fee to fly into RIC. The only other connection was thru Cincinnati, didn't arrive until late night and was already booked up anyway. The agent felt bad that I was stuck but since he couldn't help he gave me the number for customer care.
I called customer care with my dilema. The agent took one look at my 8 hour layover and was very glad to help me. She booked me on a nonstop return flight to RIC which is just what I wanted, no extra fee. Not as convenient as CHO but better than an 8 hour layover.
