Delta/Song weight restrictions on checked luggage?

Has anyone exceeded the 50lb per checked item limit on Song? We're flying out of Newark. I've *never* been charged for an overweight bag from Newark or Orlando. They just slap a "heavy" tag on the suitcase and I'm on my way. I've heard on other sites that Song is being strict with overweight checked baggage, but I don't know if it applies to Newark or Orlando. Has anyone had success/failure from either airport?

They are charging now and it is not cheap. I would consider moving to two smaller suitcases. I have personally seen Delta charge several people lately.

There is a theory that you can try to curbside check and tip the skycap. However, the problem with that theory is that if for some reason you do have to go in to the counter you will get charged. (i.e. flight changes, weather etc.)

All the airlines are cracking down on over weight bags. The skycaps do not the the flexibility they used to. More weight equals more fuel. They try to put on more freight and mail when possible. I would pay VERY close attention to the size & weight restrictions. A few lbs here and there will lighten you wallet.

I went to WDW this past June with my sister; we flew Song, BDL -MCO. Her suitcase was 13 lbs overweight and she was charged accordingly.

when we checked into JFK both of our bags were about 58 pounds. the guy who was doing the luggage handling apparently didnt work for delta (i noticed he had some other uniform on) and said "dont worry about it, i wont charge you the $50 each bag). that was nice of him.

on the way back from MCO, i noticed both our bags went slightly over the 50 pound limit, and the Delta rep didnt say anything. i think we put the bag so it was resting on 2 scales at once, and she didnt notice...you could try that trick...
