I am new to flying and just got a Delta Amex with a chunk of miles. How many miles does it require to actually get a free flight? Can I only pay for my ticket with miles or companions too? Does anyone know? Thanks you in advance.

On some flights it's 25,000, on others it is 50,000.

Yes, you can buy tickets for other people with your mileage. But you can not combine the mileage of two people to buy one ticket.

Thanks Bob..eek 25,000? I think I got 17,000 for getting the card, I hope. How is your neck of the woods? I am in PA at this moment but I heard Bxville had to close the school and Sts Peter and Paul also had water in the lower level! I still have 10 inches of snow outside of my door here. Back to NY tomorrow...Peace!

Those 25K tickets are hard to get. Get your miles, then plan a trip for at least 10 months later. You should be able to find a flight for 25K that far out.

I fly a lot for work, so do gather quite a few Delta FF miles. When we have FF miles available for tickets, but not enough for everyone's tickets, I use the FF miles for hubby and the boys and purchase my ticket, as I fly the most and will be able to make the most use of earned miles.

That's a good point, to pay cash for mine and earn more miles..I guess you are both saying that the seats "miles eligible" are few and far between?
I just recognized you too CKelley! How suite to see you here!

I agree. I have never been able to get a recent Delta flight using miles for less than 50k.

I did good with the 25,000 on my last trip to WDW. Only problem was that I had to add a day and that really wasn't a problem. Know what I mean?:thumbsup2

Bump, need all the experiences I can get! TIA

I agree that the 25K seats are getting much harder to get. The trick is to be flexible with your dates - book as early as possible (331 days out), and if at all possible, try to go some time other than peak season. We also use the Delta Am Ex Skymiles card and find it a great way to rack up points. My husband uses that as his business credit card - so lots of points gained there since he travels a lot, and we also use it for big ticket home items. In a few years, I'm sure we'll be using it for the kids' college tuition:faint:

You can most definitely get your ticket as well as any one else's that you have enough miles for. We've used them for friends and family even when neither one of us was going on the trip.

Thanks! I'll use it as much as possible! I want to save on airfare for at least one family member for a trip next year...Excuse the stupid question, but the25,000 points, does that get you a one way flight?

25K is a round trip. When you book these trips on-line, you will be charged $2.50 for every take-off and landing combined. For example, if you have a non-stop flight to MCO, you'll be charged $5 for every ticket along with the 25K or 50K FF miles. If you have a one-stop flight, you'll be charged $10 per ticket.

If you call Delta and have them arrange your FF ticket for you, you'll be charged more - I don't know exactly what since I haven't done it for a little while but last time I did it was $25 more or so per ticket.

Also keep in mind that there is an $85 annual fee so depending on where you live if you don't get the 25K within two years, it might actually be cheaper to buy a ticket outright.

Good luck! If you have your skymiles account number and pin, you can take a look on-line at SkySaver (25K) availability for the upcoming 11 months just to see what's out there.

Delta is booking one-way fares now too. You have to call and have the agent help you with this.

For Christmas I was able to get a first class saver for the flight down and a coach saver for the trip back. I spent 35,000 miles and $17.50 for the taxes and telephone help.

They just started doing this a month or so ago.
