Hi we usually fly SWA or JetBlue and we just booked Delta for our upcoming last-minute trip. We were unable to select our seats for the flight down - they were already assigned and there are no others available. I guess that means the flight is sold out? Yet when I opened a new window in my browser and went to book the same flight, its allowing me to buy 5 seats. (at a much higher price!) So now I'm confused.

We have 3 kids and would like to at least have the 2 youngest with an adult each. Last flight was Southwest and we just did family boarding and grabbed a few together.

any help is appreciated, we are flying the week before Thanksgiving.

No, the flight is not sold out and, as you've found, the online seat maps aren't generally a good indicator of how full a flight may be. A number of seats are blocked out and can only be selected in advance by Delta's elite frequent flyers, which frequently accounts for why they don't show up as available. I would suggest calling to see if they have any seats available to assign, and also that you keep checking the Web site as seats may open up over time. That includes checking five days out, three days out and one day out, when various levels of elite frequent flyers are processed for upgrade requests and more seats may become available.

Worst case is that you will need to work with the gate agent on the day of your flight to attempt to work out an acceptable arrangement. A number of seats generally are reserved for assignment by the gate agent and they frequently can work to rearrange people to accomodate families and other needs.

This happened to us once flying Delta a couple summers ago. We booked on very short notice (less than a week) a trip to Disney flying Boston-Orlando. We couldn't choose our seats, either. Since our kids were 3 and 5 at the time I was concerned. I called Delta and was assured that seats were held back (as PP stated) and that we would be able to get seats together when we checked in at the airport. Sure enough, all 4 of us were seated together. Hopefully the same happens for you. :goodvibes

Delta does hold back seats. If you are a delta american express credit card holder you get preferred seating now. Otherwise just make sure you are at airport early enough to get your seats assigned together. If not most people will change seats with you so you can sit together. Good Luck

You can also talk to the boarding agent about getting seats together if you don't get placed together automatically. They will make an announcement and ask if there is anyone willing to move and switch seats with you.
