DELTA question

I was reading the Delta customer service thread with much amusement and chagrin from afar never thinking it would pertain to me, now here I am!! Trying to get to my Disney cruise in November. NW and Delta's fares shot way up this month so I thought I would give SW a go even if it meant having to drive to Tampa to come home to BHM. (Only flight from MCO was too early for boat.) Sooooo, I checked NW and Delta tonight and both fares have come way down--went with Delta and saved $350 from NW out of Memphis. Anyway, the flight from MCO to BHM was almost full when I went to pick my seats. DH and I will be traveling with an 3 yr old and 5 year old. I was able to get seats for each of us with a child but far apart from each couple. That's fine, my question is, how do I go about making sure they don't reassign and separate us from our children as they never asked ages on the reservation? I read the horror stories on the other thread and realize they won't separate children 5 and under from parents (according to folks on same thread) but how do they know their ages if they never asked? I'm a little bit frightened of Delta after all the really negative reviews there (we don't fly much...well, never) but it was our cheapest, easiest option. I just don't want there to be a nightmare seating problem with the kids.

There is no way to lock-in seat assignments (on any domestic airline -- this is not just a Delta thing). Seat assignments are a courtesy, and if operational considerations require that you be reassigned, those considerations will take precedence. If the worst happens, often the gate agents can put you back together. Barring that, generally, folks in middle seats and towards the back of the aircraft are willing to switch with you, should you become separated.

In all my flights with Delta (and Delta Song) I have yet to permanently lose my seats. Yes, they may have moved them, but my dd and I have remained together. You should get in the habit of checking on your flights every few days. Then, if you see any changes, whatsoever, call them to get your seats reassigned. You should be able to access the flights either by a SkyMiles acct or the confirmation number. Don't worry, not all that many people get split up, it's a rare occurance.

I have been moved about 20 times since booking in Feb for end of Oct, trip. I am travwlling with my DS who is young. Never once has Delta separated us! I've called and had seat reassigned and they were always good with us!

Airlines rarely automatically re-assign folks sitting together to be sitting separated -- rather, they'd simply cancel the seating assignments entirely.

I flew Delta in mid-September with a group of 11 people, but I booked the flights 3 months earlier. Delta changed flight numbers and equipment 3 times. The first time, I repositioned everyone sitting together as I originally scheduled it, the next two times I didn't bother doing anything.

Delta kept our party together on both flights when they automatically reassigned seats each time, but I did see a couple of people on one flight ask the flight attendants to help move their party to adjoining seats. In both cases they were accomodated and this was on a plane with only 70 total seats. I can't imagine anyone keeping a parent from sitting next to a young child.

....and just because the seat maps now show no availability next to each other, doesn't mean there aren't such seats available. Only about 80% of the seats can be pre-booked; the remainder are saved for airport assignment only....assignable only on the day of the flight. These seats are generally towards the front of the coach section.

Make sure to check your flight info every few days. If and when they change time & equipment you will be able to call and get back or change what they have given you. the longer you wiat the more change that the seats will be taken.
