I'm sorry-but I don't see it as Delta not having compassion.
The airlines were exceptionally compassionate to people who were truly inconvenienced or damaged by the cowardly acts of a terrorist. They HEMMORAGED money to take care of stranded passengers, and allow people to make changes. They are not non-profit organizations. They have shareholders, and a bottom line.
Your friends entered into a contract. They purcahsed tickets to fly. Delta is continuing to honor that contract. It is issues with terrorists, not Delta that is keeping them from flying. Delta was in no way culpable for the actions of these madmen, nor should they be held responsible in a moral or financial sense.
If our airlines fold, so will our entire economy. You will no longer get your mail in a timely manner (how do you think it gtes moved around?) The price of commercial goods will increase. Some 200,000 people in the travel and tourism industry will become jobless--are you ready to offer them financial support? On top of that, they will then not be adding to our economy, and we will fall deeply into recession.
Your friends have the right to not fly. That is THEIR choice. But don't expect the Delta to foot the bill.
The tickets are non-refundable, which means they also can't be transferred. They *Might* be able to donate them to charity and take tax writeoff, you would have to speak to Delta and your tax advisor about that.
