Quick question. If I have a reservation leaving at 10:30 and there is an earlier flight leaving at 8:30 with seats open. Do you think they will let us switch that day if the seats are still open? I know there is no guarantee and in fact we may end up getting stuck in Cincinnati. Just wondered if they would allow it without charging us. Does Delta ever overbook???

Your flight being at 10:30 and you want to stand by on the earlier flight at 8:30, you must pay a $25. per passenger fee when you arrive at the airport. (If no seats are listed as available you will be denied. Yes, Delta overbooks.)

I don[t know anyone who tried it but, if you do everything needed including showing up punctually for the earlier flight and you make the request stating probable irregular operations including weather as the reasons and there are seats available except you don't agree to pay any fee and you are denied, then the airline may have more unpublished responsibilities to you if you miss the connection.

From the Delta website:

Same-day Confirmed Travel

The same-day confirmed option allows you to change your flight time on the same day of travel for a fee of $25. To use the same-day confirmed option, you must confirm your new flight within 3 hours of the scheduled departure time. If you have a flexible fare (usually a refundable ticket), you may be able to change your itinerary without a fee.

You can use the same-day confirmed option for travel within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Delta and Delta Connection® flights.
Limitations

This option is limited to specific flight routing and connection changes.

* You can change from a connection flight to a nonstop/direct flight.
* You will be booked in the same class of service you were originally ticketed.

If you are a Medallion member currently confirmed for an upgrade in V class, you will be rebooked in Coach class and need to request a an upgrade for your new flight.

The following are not permissible:

* No changes between origin, destination, or co-terminals (such as New York’s LaGuardia and JFK airports).
* No changes to routing for fares that are flight specific or require specific routing

Yes, Delta does overbook. Most airlines do!

I know on one flight to MCO from BDL, I was offered the chance to take an earlier flight(1st class, no less!), but the gate attendent told me I could do it only if I had carry-on luggage. Since I had already checked my bag, they told me I couldn't switch flights because they want you travelling with your bags(I guess in case you're up to no good). So, I would check that out before arriving at the airport if you're planning on checking luggage.

I agree with the prior posters....you will be charged $25/ticket and this option will pop up on the automated check-in monitor (if earlier seats are available) when you check-in. While all airlines overbook, if you make the change and pay the fee you become a passenger on the new flight(s) and as far as I can tell, face no higher risk of getting bumped then people who were booked on your new flight(s) to begin with.

This past May we came off a cruise in Seattle and had a 1:30pm departure SEA-ATL-MCO. We got to the airport around 9:30am and there was a flight offered to us around 11am on a SEA-CVG-MCO routing. In that case I gladly paid $75 for the 3 of us to get back to Orlando around 8pm that night instead of 11pm. We were cleared all the way through even though there was 2 flights involved with the connection in Cincinnati.

Considering we had nonrefundable tickets with $100 change fees, the $25 fee to change to an earlier flight that morning was worthwhile to us. Had the fee been $50 per ticket I would not have done it.
