Delta FF sky miles question

We have enough Delta FF miles for two free tickets. (From using Delta Skymiles Amex card) We're planning our next trip Sept 8-18, 2004. What's the earliest date we can book our flight? And what are the odds of getting a direct, non-stop flight?

You can start to book a flight 330 days out from your trip. It depends on where you live but quite a few of the Delta flights connect through a hub.

Also if you get a good price on flights you might want to consider just buying the tickets. Sometimes it is better to save your ff miles for when the tickets are expensive.

Book at the 330 day mark if you know what you want. Normally I book much later then that and do OK, but it comes and goes.

Once you are at the 330 day mark, you can use the Delta website to look at the flight choices available for FF awards. In my experience, direct non-stop flights are few and far between for Value awards. In fact, in a couple days, we will be changing planes TWICE to get from Nashville to Sacramento on FF award tickets.

I had planned to use my Delta skymiles for our trip in November, but the 25,000 mile flights were either first thing in the morning or late at night, neither one good for travelling with young children. The 50,000 mile flights were at better times, but I don't have enough miles. I ended up booking on SWA for $650 for the 5 of us, which was much cheaper, and easier, than it would have been to get 2 FF tickets and pay for 3 tickets. I will keep saving the skymiles for future travel.

I also found when I first started looking at these flights back in January, that there weren't that many flights available, but when I looked again recently, they'd added more flights for November. So don't despair if there isn't anything very attractive at the 330 day mark. I'd keep checking until you find something workable.
