That makes no sense. You wouldn't have Diabetic complications if you didn't have diabetes.:confused3

Even the best managed and best controlled diabetes patient can go blind and die. If anyone know that, it's me. I am going to assume that you have no experience with this illness, because if you did, you would never make a comment like that.

Anyone can go blind and die.

Diabetics that go blind usually go blind form damage done to the blood vessels caused by high blood glucose which is caused by poor control.

Almost all of the complications are caused by poor control.

Both of these comments are your opinion. Which you are entitled to. However laws are laws no matter the Dis board opinion.

As far as my Aunt,I somehow doubt her medical team will agree with your opinion as to what caused her death. It always amazes me when people try and post about subjects they have no experience with.

Not worth it guys. Just not worth it to argue with people who think they know all there is to know.

Yes, but words like "usually" and "almost" are not the same as "always". In the case of my brother, he was extrememly well cared for and his levels were controlled. He still went blind and passed away. Again, until a person's been there, they should not make comments that can be hurtful to those that HAVE been there.

I disagree with you there. A person can be extremely knowledgeable about a subject without having any personal involvement. Do you really think every endocrinologist has Diabetes?

I also used usually because there can be an underlying other cause but Diabetes in general doesn't cause blindness, it is the damage done by the high glucose in the blood and the small blood vessels get damaged first-eyes, kidneys, extremities, etc. Also every single time the glucose goes high there can be damage, so the damage could be done even before a person is diagnosed.

And control has changed they have found that blood glucose needs to be a lot lower than they used to think so someone who thinks they were well controlled in the past may not have been.

I'm very sorry about your brother, no one should die that young from anything.

Going through years of education and working with diabetic patients IS personal experience with diabetes. :confused3 Thank you for the comment about my brother. Now, I have to be done with this thread as it is only making me sad and angry. Time for me to bow out and move on to happier topics. Have a blessed day, everyone.:goodvibes

I am going to close this thread because it has gone off subject into another realm entirely.

For anyone looking to get airline seating assignments ahead of time, the take home messages are:
1) airlines are not under the ADA. They are under the Air Carrier Act instead. It is similar, but not exactly the same.
2) Mentioning ADA to them is likely to confuse them and not get their cooperation.
3) Be ready to explain what accommodations are needed.
4) For a child, age may be an important consideration, especially if there are few seats left right next to each other.
5)It may be important to know whether you need to sit right next or if across the aisle or close by is enough. Be sure you lnow what they mean by close by.
6) If seats can't be arranged beforehand that meet your needs, plan to get to the airport early and talk to an agent. Some seats are not assigned until just before the flight to give the agent some lee-way in rearranging seats because of needs.

And, one last thing about diabetes.
I am an RN , not a person with diabetes, although I have extended family members with diabetes.

Diabetes out of control makes complications more likely, but is not the only factor in complications. Many people have complications despite being in good control.
