Hey guys. We are going to Disney Tuesday. Flying nonstop from TYS ( knoxville tn ) to MCO. There are only to nonstops here. 7:05 am-which we are booked on and the 6:30pm flight.

I went online a few min ago and the price per ticket is 1400.00 RT. There are only 25 seats shown as sold. 30-35 are still available. Never had this happen. Almost ever plane in knoxville to MCO sales out.

Here is my question. Will they cancel our flight? What is going to happen if no more seats sale? Is anyone fimilar with Delta's policies? :confused3

TIA

How are you seeing 25 seats sold? are you looking at the seat map? that will only tell you seats reserved.

The airline GDS systems are set up to show '9' available as a maximum, no matter how many are still left. ie if there are 124 seats still available to be sold, '9' is the maximum shown.

You may also gauge by using the fare class chart (I don't know how it works on Delta, but on United it's by using the expert booking option) This shows how many seats left in each fare bucket, but again only up to a maximum of 9.

Even a reservations agent won't know exactly how many seats are left if you call the day before a flight - they may tell you 'some' or 'one or two' but can't confirm exact amounts.

Basically, I'm trying to convey that unless you have inside infromation, '25' may not really be the number of tickets sold on yoru flight. Hopefully that makes you feel a little better.

Thank you so much... Yes that makes me feel better. I was looking at the seat map. I hope there are people who have not assigned their seats!!!

I just went and checked out the seat map for your flight. That's a very small aircraft, so 25 sold is still about 50% or so sold (sorry, I didn't do the math)

I've been on flights with 2 pax on board on plane that size, and 4 pax on A319/320 ie much larger aircraft.

Worse case scenario they will protect you on the next flight (either the connection or the nonstop) but I doubt that they would cancel that flight based on the numbers.

For all that we see here about seat assignments (and for all that I make sure that I get my preferred seats every flight - creature of habit) you'd be surprised how many ppl DON'T get seat assignments. On some airlines like AirCanada, the lowest fares don't allow advance selection. Other ppl book when the seat map is already under airport control, and can't select a seat. Or they don't know that they can. Or their travel agent doesn't do it for them. Or the only seats available are in the elite zone and they don't have status therefore can't preassign a seat...

So, you have flown with an almost empty plane? If that is so, that makes us feel better. There is another DIS family that is leaving on that day too. I bet she will feel better as well.... Thanks Bavaria :grouphug:

Now, if that flight DOES get cancelled, don't you come looking for me! :rotfl: Have a good trip!

YES we do feel better

Keep in mind that plane HAS to go to Orlando full or empty! They need it for the next flight where it might be OVERSOLD! Contrary to popular myth flights are not rountinely cancelled due to light loads, it messes up the entire flight schedule for that plane for the day. The airlines can't afford to have that plane sitting in TYS doing nothing.

My thoughts exactly. They won't cancel the flight for being half booked... bad weather, equipment problems, and things like that are to blame for last minute cancellations....

Have a great flight.

and since airlines no longer pay compensation ie hotel accommodation etc due to weather delays, you can be assured that if your flight is ever cancelled, chances are you will be told that it's due to 'weather' over any other reason.

(Now, credit must go to United, which actually deposits miles into elite member accounts for delays over 2 hours, without being asked, as an apology)

The thing that I have found with delta is that when they change the flight time by 1 min they make a blank seating chart. We hae lost our seats 3 times now and if I didn't know from these boards I would not keep checking to make sure I had seats together with my young sons. Last time I called I asked about adding a friend to the route and he said sure but we have been sold out on the return flight for over two months and it will be over $800 more than you paid and it would be on a different airline. :confused3 We also have almost 3 months to go tell we return. So I am not making hotel plans for the night we are soposed to get in, As maybe we can get bumped and have vouchers for anougher trip down.

The point was it might be full and half the people never called and got thier new seats numbers. Mum

In August we had the same flight out of Kville as you do. There were only 16 people booked for the flight. At 6:50 they announced a computer problem with the plane and rebooked us on a 8:00 flight to Atlanta. We left Atlanta about 11:00 and arrived at MCO around 12:30. We did get to sit in first class from Atlanta to MCO however. It worked out ok for us though but I would have preferred the direct flight, getting to Orlando at 9:30.

I wondered if there was really a computer problem on the plane or if the computer problem was that only 16 people were booked. Carol A's comment that they need the plane in Orlando for return flights makes sense though.

I'd rather have been inconvienced than on a plane with computer problems!

The previous posters are correct, the general "rule" is the airline needs the aircraft in MCO for another flight.

There is an exception to the rule. The plane is coming back from MCO to the same airport and that flight is also empty. The airline can cancel both flights. This is more likely on city pairs like LAX-LAS where an airline can cancel a pair of flights and accomodate passengers on other flights.
