I'm so happy that mine is one of the Dells with a bad battery! Happy because my battery hardly keeps a charge, so I was planning on replacing it. Saves me some money. :teeth: Yes, I'm a cheap date...happy to save money any way I can! :cool1:

The issue of it not keeping a charge could possibly be related to the reason for this recall so I would take their advice and not use it until it's replaced.

Wonderful, and we have three Inspiron's. Luckily mine is new and unaffected. Hopefully the lost laptop was affected and I can get a fresh battery for mine.

I'm surprised to read that my laptop is not included in the recall. We have the Dell Inspiron 1150 and the battery gets soooo hot! Sometimes when I've been using it for a while the bottom of the computer gets hot enough to burn my legs!

Ditto to all except that mine's an Inspiron 2650!

Thanks for the update; mine wasn't one of the batteries on recall, so that's good to know. Now I just wish they'd do something about the adapters.

I'm wondering if this is what fried my hard drive Friday night. All I know is that Dell is sending someone to my house tomorrow to replace my hard drive battery and keyboard for no charge. (keyboard cause I have 1 broken key)

Gotta check the numbers on my battery.

My understanding is that they'll catch fire before they fry your hard drive.

Should have asked yourself why Sony would take responsibility if it was Dell's oeprating system.

Experts say the problem is caused by a manufacturing error by Sony, where metallic impurities were introduced into some of the batteries. The metallic parts may then intrude through the insulation that is supposed to keep apart the anode and cathode elements in the battery cells, leading to a spark that can cause a fire.

The batteries covered by the recall were produced by Sony over the past two years. The same batteries are also used by other computer makers, although the Sony spokesman said the problem was restricted to those used by Dell.

Not exactly. Every battery made has this issue. The design of the notebook, which was by Dell determines what will happen when the battery does have a problem. Why would Sony help pay even if they felt they were blameless? Because that is how business works. For example Dell doesn't want to take all the heat. They go to Sony and say, if you share some of this and help pay for it we will guarentee you our battery business AND all our CD-Rom drive business for xx years.
It's NEVER as simple as it appears.
Here is a more technical explanation of the battery issue from computerworld:

The defect was caused by a short circuit that happens when microscopic metal particles break through the lithium ion cell wall and contact a battery anode, said Sony spokesman Rick Clancy.

"You try to eliminate that in the manufacturing process, but to eliminate them 100% is very difficult. Usually, when you have a short circuit, it might lead to a battery powering down so you'd have a dead battery, but other times, it could lead to incidents, including flaming," Clancy said

The chances of a short circuit depend on the design of each PC, such as whether the battery cells are aligned in parallel or are perpendicular, and their proximity to heat sources such as the processor and power supply. But ultimately, the odds are against the engineers. Despite the challenge of blocking every particle, the number of short circuits has been very low, Sony insists.

I'm well aware of the technical issues involved. We had the same concerns in our products since we use similar raw cells in our battery packs.

well then hopefully you designed it so it doesn't catch fire if the battery short circuits :)

The design had been determined to be sound. The batteries continue to be manufactured in accordance with such design. The problem has been determined to be related to manufacturing.

I got my replacement battery last night via UPS.

I guess Apple has the same problem with it's Sony made battery!

There will be more. It's just a matter of time. There will be other companies using Sony cells and companies that check their battery packs despite who made the cells. Given the visibility, nobody wants to be the next company that has a device burn because of this issue.

QUICK PSA! Btw, for those of you who have to send the batteries back, we can't send them for you through the Postal Service. Apparently the lithium levels are too high for us to send.
And, Ducklite I can't imagine how you got the new one through us, unless the lithium levels are lower than the originals.;)

Sorry, it came DHS, not UPS. But the included postage paid return label to return the defective one is USPS Parcel Post, addressed to:

Postage Due Unit
US Postal Service
PO Box 9998
Mount Juliet, TN 37122-9998

So either Dell screwed up, or the USPS did. Either way I'm using Dell's address as the return, because I don't want it back!

Thanks for this info...

Sounds like DH has one of the defective batteries...you may have saved him!

I got my battery a couple days ago. So nice to have a battery that can get a good charge, unlike my old one. :teeth:

I have the same one too! I had it sitting on the kitchen table last weekend, I left the room and when I came back I noticed that the screen went black and I could not get it to go back on. I noticed that it was very hot and I could hear the fan running. I finally popped the battery out, that was the only way I could get it to stop. It scares me to think what could have happened if I didn't walk back in. I'm surprised it's not on the list. I don't use it too often, mainly take it on vacation. I had it out to show my aunt some pictures.
