Deli meats not allowed during pregnancy?

I ate lunch meat (not a lot, but ocassionally), tuna salad (again, maybe twice in the past nine months), peanut butter, Casey's hot dogs, drank coffee, soda (which I actually craved more than I did before), AND rode the Safari at AK.......I guess I'm a really really bad pregnant lady....

The end of my pregnancy, like the last month, I drank a huge fountain soda at work every day, about 32 ounces. But then, at that point, my OB gave me permission to drink alcohol in moderation if it helped. (I had an allergic reaction to pregnancy and itched an insane amount.) I also drank Coke and ate peanut butter while nursing. And I wouldn't give up coffee if I got pregnant again.

Funny thing is that I rarely drank coffee or soda before I got pregnant. I did drink a lot of tea, and still do, although I switched to decaf. Now I have been craving soda (I think it's the bubbles that my tummy likes), and every once in a while I'll crave coffee. I didn't drink alcohol at all to begin with, so no temptation there.

BTW, I had about a month where my entire belly (not just where it was stretching) itched like crazy and I got a rash (not raised though, and not hives). I figured my skin was protesting the cocoa butter I'd been using.

me too. they can make a case against anything. I have avoided heavily processed things like bologna (which I wouldn't eat anyway) and salami but have had turkey breast on occasion. I like turkey sandwiches ... a lot.

I've had 2-3 hotdogs and TONS of peanut butter. I've actually haven't been told about peanut butter from any of my Drs and I've had 3 this pregnancy. I lived on peanut butter when I was pregnant with DS6.

I've also had a coke on occasion :scared1:

Of course I've had a zillion problems this pregnancy so maybe I shouldn't talk but I wasn't strict with DS either and I didn't have any issues then.

Pregnancy makes you do funny things. I am usually a pretty healthy eater, but all I wanted the first 3 months was junk. Ramen noodles, Carl Buddig lunchmeat, cookies, chips, any dessert - the only thing that saved me were my prenatals and Kashi cereal.

And tuna is ok, as long as it's not over 8 oz or something a week. :)

Shhhh... I rode Safari too, when I was about 10 weeks. ;) I just prayed that we didn't get the insane driver we got the time before. Luckily, our driver drove it like a granny the whole way, lol! I have also been guilty of eating tuna salad maybe once a month as well as filet-o-fish sandwiches. (I figure they don't count as "real" fish, lol!)

I am being such an angel on the hot dog and lunchmeat front though!!! I am also not doing any caffeinated beverages or colas. I do like my Sprite every now and again, I must say! Other than that, it's milk or water.

Now, we're just gonna ignore the piece of cake I had for lunch. At least there was no peanut butter, hot dogs, tuna or lunchmeat in it, right?!?!?

Good luck, Hippie, I see you are so close to the big day!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I ate and dank lots of things on the "no no list" while I was pregnant. My doctor's were fine with things in moderation.

I rode the Safari at 14 weeks.......maybe once every other week all the way up to 37 weeks. :scared1:

Always made sure to sit in the front where it is less bumpy though, and braced myself for the bridges.

DH tells me if this kid doesn't come in the next week, we're going to go on a Safari and sit in the back!

My doc also said no lunchmeat. We have alot of lunchmeat sandwhiches brought in at work so now I get a salad or get a grilled chicken sandwhich. I'm not a hot dog person so that doesn't bother me. He also said I could have a couple glasses of soda a day. However I have noticed that soda tastes better now then it used to.

Pregnancy is just like parenting. You've got to take all the information you are given and the make the smartest decision for you and your family.

Smoking crack while drinking a highball of liquor and sniffing ant poison straight from the can... probably not a good idea.

Eating a hotdog or a peanut butter sandwich? You make the call. ;)

I had the raised rash all over my belly, arms and legs, for more than six weeks. It was terrible... I didn't resort to alcohol, but I was tempted some days! (I did resort to an induction, but he was on his way anyway at that point! I would definitely be in the back of the safari soon! ;) )

I craved SpaghettiOs for two months. I kept telling him I would make a big thing of good sauce and pasta, and he kept asking for SpaghettiOs. :sad2: Fetuses. BTW, Russ says you have a pretty baby - and he never dishes out compliments on signatures unless Mickey is in them. ;)

HAHAHAHAHA :thumbsup2

I am a bad pregnant lady, too. I drink diet coke - no one would be around me if I didn't. I eat copious amounts of shrimp lately - it tastes good. I eat PASTURIZED goat cheese but I have sadly put down the brie wheel. I have had a sip of my husband's beer during a BBQ. I eat Captain Crunch and Frosted Flakes at 11:00pm just cause I can... This is my 4th and FINAL baby and I really don't care :confused3 .

When I was pregnant I drank coffee everyday. Never before pregnancy and never ever. I just really needed it.

Is anything safe anymore???

Geez I wonder how any of us survived without all of these doctors telling us all of the things to avoid. I ate plenty of lunchmeat when I was PG, and even had the occasional Diet Coke.

I guess I just got lucky.

To each their own, but I think this whole what to eat and what not to eat thing is going overboard. :sad2: IMO your body will tell you what you need.

My doctor never said anything about lunchmeat, although I had read about it already. They also never said anything about peanut butter.

Come to think of it, I think the only thing they told me to cut back on was tuna due to the mercury. But they said I could still have it once a week.:confused3

People do better and make better choices because they know better. Medical progress and the information it provides is is a wonderful thing. :)

The next generation of women will do things a bit differently than we are doing it now. That's how it works - as we learn - we change and adapt to try and take advantage of what we know. There's nothing wrong with that.

Me too and mine too. I'm glad I am beyond the baby making years, I wouldn't be able to conform to all of the latest 'rules'.:lmao:

My thoughts exactly!

It's a good thing my Dr. at the time I was PG was laid back... as I gained a grand total of 63 lbs. with DS #2!! I am over 6' tall and nobody would believe me. And yes, I lost it all within a couple of months and kept it off. :cool1:

It depends on which side of the fence you fall.

For some women, the risk of basic consumption items (lunchmeat, peanut butter, citrus, honey, etc.) is so small that it is not worth worrying about. If you don't eat a ton of it and increase the risk, no big deal.

For some women, it is nine months out of your life, and if you have to eat nothing but bread and water for nine months, no big deal. If you can do anything at all to not increase any risk of any type, it is worth the peace of mind.

All you can do is take the information they arm you with and use it wisely.
