Hi,
We've used the Fair FX card in the US and it was accepted everywhere that Mastercard is accepted. Had no problems at all with it and no hidden fees whatsoever, only ever got charged for ATM withdrawls. When I got it, it definately had the best exchange rate available for prepaid credit cards but I haven't checked lately so just do a bit of homework and shop around. We still use it to load up and pay my DVC dues every year and the rate seems competitive at the time.
I'd certainly recommend it :)

we got one and used it last september with no probs, as said its a mastercard so is accepted everywhere!
If you go through this link then the card is free (usually £9.95). The exchange rate is better than other cards as well, think its $1.54 with fairfx at the moment

I'd definitely recommend it too. We've used ours on two or three trips now and never had any problems using it in any shop or restaurant. We wouldn't be without it now, much more convenient than traveller's cheques, and so easy to top up online if you need to.

Surprised no one else has pointed this out but remember it costs you $2 PLUS the ATM fee to withdraw from an ATM.

From the FairFX website:
If you are withdrawing currency at an ATM the standard FairFX fees apply (€1.50, $2.00), some ATM providers charge for using their cash points however they normally inform you of this before you make a withdrawal.

We used one in May and had no problems, whatsoever with it. Like you, I was a bit wary of it for a good while, but I won't hesitate to use it again :)

We've use ours about 3 times a year for the past 3 years all over the US, it really is a great safe way to spend your money, not to mention the exchange rate is one of the best you will find anywhere.
We try and use it for nearly all transactions as the atm fee really can add up, in May we took 200 pounds in dollars and the rest on the fairfx card and didn't use an atm at all.

I also use mine to pay my dues to Disney for our DVC, and have used it to pay for hotels in $$.

I like all the above benefits to the card and I am going to add one to the list.

I have really enjoyed being able to use it fee free to make online payments in US$. I registered it to PayPal so I use it that way too. My own bank charges for making purchases in a foreign currency.

It was pointed out by Juliebrooke in her post :)
I personally can't see the point in using it to withdraw cash, might as well take some cash with you as well.
We found it so convenient to use in shops restaurants etc, than use travellers cheques.
Just remember though when you use it that it will take a few hours or so to clear what you have spent.

I have purchased a FairFX card for this trip - have never had one before but did have a similar thing when AmEx did one. It was very useful but for some reason, they were discontinued. :confused3

I've looked around, and FairFX definately have great exchange rates. :thumbsup2

They have also been incredibly prompt with responding to email questions. I tend to give prospective service providers a bit of work to prove themselves before I sign up. Once I have checked out credibility and reviews, customer care is the deciding factor. I am very pleased with them.

Hi can someone tell me can you top these up any other way than debit card as I only have a cash card at the moment so can you do bank transfer online banking and if so how long for funds to get on your card thanks

Can I fund my FairFX account by bank transfer?

Yes you can, generally most high street banks do not charge for this service. If this is your preferred method of payment, please send your funds to the following account.

Barclays Bank PLC
7th Floor
United Kingdom House
180 Oxford Street
London W1D 1EA

Account Number: 80411027
Sort Code: 20-36-47
Account name: FairFX Plc

I would assume that funds would appear on your card within a few hours of the transfer

Not that I really expect this to be an issue, but what do you do if you still have cash left on the card at the end of your holiday? Are there any charges for converting it back to GBP?

you just withdraw it at whatever the rate of the day is, sometimes it works in your favour!

Can I have the balance on my account refunded to me?

If you wish to withdraw your money, we recommend that you do so via any UK ATM that accepts MasterCard®. This is the cheapest way to withdraw your money as you only pay either EUR €1.50 or USD $2.00 per ATM withdrawal (depending on which card you have). The balance will be converted back into Sterling at the MasterCard® rate. This may leave a small residual balance on the FairFX Currency Card as ATMs are limited by the notes that they can dispense, but this is typically the most convenient and cheapest method.

If you prefer the money in one lump sum, we can arrange for any unused funds on your FairFX Currency Card to be refunded to you, once all transactions and fees have been deducted, including the refund fee, unless you have arranged to transfer any unused funds to another foreign currency card managed by us. We calculate the exchange rate based on the rate on that day. Our buy back rates are equally as competitive as the rates that we sell currency at. You will also have to pay a Refund Fee of £10.00.

We recommend that customers keep their FairFX Currency Card until it expires. It is valid for three years and can be used wherever there is a MasterCard® acceptance mark. You can still keep the FairFX Currency Card and there is no need to destroy it! We can transfer the money to you and you can still keep the card for future use. You would be able to top it up if and when needed via our website, www.fairfx.com or SMS text!
