This has been in development since 2010. I thought the movie was dead, but came across this article today.

is circling a lead role in The Haunted Mansion, Guillermo del Toro’s long-gestating film based on the Disneyland attraction. Del Toro electrified the crowd when he announced the project during Disney’s panel at Comic-Con in 2010. It has been in development since.

I hope this is true, because I think Guillermo del Toro is as visionary a director as there is working today. I think he will deliver a terrific HM movie. Also, I like Ryan Gosling too -good actor.

When I first heard the idea of del Torro directing a HM movie I thought it was genius. Then I thought it was cancelled. So this makes me very happy. I know he produced it and didn't direct it, but The Orphanage is one of my favorite movies.

AWESOME news! I, too, thought this project was dead. Can't wait to see what they do with it.

BTW, I can't believe it's been 5 years already since this was announced.

Huge del Toro fan here, so I'm happy to hear there may still be life in this project. I thought he was focusing most of his efforts towards the Pacific Rim projects and the 'dark magic' DC comics stuff, so it sounds like he may have a lot of coals in the fire.

Years ago when the Haunted Mansion project was announced, I think del Toro's early ideas were based around the Hatbox ghost (pretty sure I remember reading in interviews). Now this was a while back and things could have changed a lot, but would this seem to coincide with Disneyland bringing back the Hatbox ghost, and the rumors of his inclusion at WDW as well ??

EDIT: attached one of article links relating the the Hatbox centerpiece - the sculpt ended up not being related to the movie, but the article still mentions his plan about the hatbox:

It will likely have some humor because their goal will be to attract families. If it's too frightening, families will not be watching. But it needs to be scary/funny on a Ghostbusters level, not an Eddie Murphy stupid version level.

I second the motion for a Ghostbusterish spin on Haunted Mansion.

Guillermo del Toro is an excellent writer and director, so I have faith he will create a spectacular HM film.

On a side note: anyone else looking forward to Crimson Peak? It looks delightfully creepy
