Dehydration Prevention

Off this question, is there any Gatorade/Powerade type drinks without the sugar and flavors? I would love it if they took the salt and electrolytes and just stuck it in plain water. I agree with what others said, on days when it's super hot and you need something more than just water that stuff seems to "stick" with you longer, if that even makes sense. But I obviously want to avoid the extra sugar, and while I like the lemon-lime flavors the rest really don't taste great.

Off topic (sort of) but when I was an attractions employee at Universal I had a manager who would use his own money and buy powdered Gatorade and then mix it with water in a huge cooler we had in our breakroom. On the especially hot days he would assign one person to fill up as many as those little paper cone cups as they could hold and hand them out to all the employees on rotation outside. Not sure if it was part of the "look" for us to be drinking it, but honestly it really saved the day.

Also good to use some common sense when vacationing at Disney in the summer. While it is good to drink water, wear a hot, use sunscreen, etc., should also limit your sun exposure and how long you actually plan to be at a park. It is a bit like trying to run a marathon without being in proper physical condition. You don't suddenly turn into an Olympic athlete just because you are at Disney. Do you regularly walk x miles per day at home during the hottest part of the year or spend hours doing your most strenuous outdoor activities at the hottest time of the day? Probably not. And what you eat/drink isn't going to be a substitute for being in shape for all of that walking.

I found this that I’m going to try:

Nuun tablets. Target usually has them, but a running store also would. You drop them in water and they add electrolytes but aren't as cloying as Gatorade
I have those!! I think Drip Drop works better for me, but I plan to bring some of my Nuun as well!

Pedialyte. Specifically, Pedialyte Advanced Care+. It's sold in the baby section of most stores. It's in powder form, in individual packets, in a black box. It's sold in boxes of 6. You add it to a bottle of water, preferably a nice and cold bottle! Totally worth the $$ buying a cold bottle of water at counter service and adding this to it.

Has more electrolytes than Gatorade or Powerade, and doesn't upset the stomach nearly as much. I use it to recover from running long distances in the heat, and the difference between this and Gator/Powerade is remarkable. No gut rot, and it's fast and effective.
Ive seen that recommended as well. Thank you!

I'm also blond and fair skinned and prone to migraines, and dehydration is one of the causes. I found Liquid IV pouches at Costco and I've been using those all summer even just for mowing the lawn and stuff. They're electrolyte replenishers so they are a bit salty (I don't mind but my kids don't like it). But they are way more handy to pop a few pouches of powder into your bag for Disney and add them to your water vs. bringing or buying Gatorade all day. I like the guava, passionfruit, and tangerine the best. If you're a Costco member you can get some flavors in store and all of them online. When they're not on sale they're a little over $1 per pouch but they basically triple the hydrating effect of a bottle of water. We're going to Disney at the end of July and I intend to put one in each water I drink!!
We always end up in the bathroom a lot bc of me. My kids joke that it's the "ride" we line up for most. But if you're peeing then at least you know you're hydrated. Best of luck. I know vacation headaches are THE WORST. I sometimes find a cool shower before heading to bed (even if I plan to shower the next morning) helps too. That's probably all in my head but if it works then whatever!

Sounds like we need to vacation together. We could compare our favorite bathrooms! Lol Thank you for the suggestion!

I want to reply to everyone, but I can’t get the mulitquote to work right!

I got a Mission hat that is a big floppy sun hat with a chilly towel in it. So I can get it wet like a chilly towel.

We definitely limit park time and we have actually been taking walks through the heatwave here in Ohio. (Makes that cold front that just went though even more satisfying!)

We are ordering groceries so I will definitely add some more of those water heavy fruit and veggies.

Love the pickle idea too!

Thank you all for all of your thoughts and suggestions!!!

Luckily if you’re peeing at every bathroom you aren’t clinically dehydrated so that’s a good sign. I too get sun headaches so try to get in the shade whenever you can. You seem to be doing everything right so onky think I can think to add is no alcohol

OP, as others have said, use your UV blocking umbrella. I bought one for our trip that took place a few months ago and wow! Game changer with portable shade, especially in extended outdoor queue lines. I love the other tips that I’m going to try next time, such as pedialyte, nuun tablets or liquid IV.

I think I’ve had alcohol in Disney once (once of the slushee things from France?) So that hasn’t contributed before, but it’s an important thing to remember! Thank you! I do feel pretty prepared and appreciate the support! I’ve always been sun sensitive and there just isn’t that much more I can do. But I have never tried all of the newish electrolyte products, so I’m hoping they might finally be my magic bullet. They definitely help for similar situations closer to home!

I think especially without fastpasses that I will actually use it. I’m leery of just walking through most summer crowds with it, but the lines make sense. That will be another new thing for me this year. I feel like I add at least 2 new things each trip and so far most things have made a big difference.

Make sure you start drinking or getting extra fluids through fruit/veggies starting 3 days prior to leaving for Disney so you are starting out hydrated. Do you eat enough while you are there?

Probably not. I find it hard to eat there with the heat. Especially all of the fried stuff. Definitely makes me more aware of what I want to do with my grocery order.

If you are sun sensitive do you have a really good pair of sunglasses? Something like Maui Jim? My daughter and dad both have a pair and swear by them.

What QS have drink refill stations? I can only think of Sunshine Seasons, but I honestly thought you weren’t supposed to refill there?
Back in the day, Backlot Express, Restaurantosaurus and Satuli Canteen has self serve refill stations in addition to Sunshine Seasons. I'm not sure if those have reopened yet.

We take the Propel brand water flavor packets. I've used these for my DD's CM friends as they can't use anything that has food coloring in their water bottles (Propel is clear when added to a bottle) No sugar, easy to carry and taste pretty good. Also we can usually get a box of them at Sam's club if you have a membership pretty reasonably priced vs Gatorade.

I just thought of something last night. Take Emergen-C packets. Each packet has 3 bananas worth of Potassium. Plus with all the water going through your system, you'll be losing vitamins too.

My kids voted Moaning Myrtles bathroom in Hogsmeade as their favorite. Maybe it's time for us to pick a Disney winner too!
