Dehydration and Standing Waiting for Rides and Characters

My Mom's favorite trick was after a bathroom break to soak her hat in cold water and ring it out a bit. Then while standing in long lines a bit of water would drip down her and it would cool her off as it dried!

We were in the parks last August when the temp reached 100 degrees. I wore a bucket style hat that I frequently soaked in cold water. What a relief! I also ran my wrists under the cold tap in bathroom sinks. And we enjoyed Splash Mountain, GRR and all the water attractions (fountains etc.) Don't forget, so many attractions are indoors and I believe all indoor attractions have AC.

Also, no need to buy water or fill up bottles from the drinking fountains (that water tastes terrible!). You can get great tasting ice water from all the counter service restaurants for free. You just have to wait in line, if there is one, and ask nicely. I prefer this to having to carry a water bottle.

Are there water fountains around the park where one can fill up water bottles for free?

Just a warning, it comes out really bubbly, looks almost dirty but it's not. The bubbles clear after awhile! This was our experience anyways!

Any counter service will give you free water also. I like to ask for "large" waters so they don't give me a bunch of tiny cups.

Get there early and do shows and rides with air conditioned queues in the afternoon. Have lunch at an indoor restaurant. If you start to feel overheated take a break somewhere indoors. There are lots of places to cool off.

That said, wearing a hat and drinking lots of water should be enough for most folks.

Based on your post I wonder if you are like me and tend to dehydrate very easily (I once nearly passed out while waiting for a raft ride at an east coast park). Just to help calm your concerns, I have not had this problem at DLR the way I do at WDW during summer months. While I still need to drink more water than most everyone else in my party I don't start to feel light headed ever, and I don't need to take long breaks midday like I do in FL.

I can usually manage just fine by mixing longer indoor or sitting experiences with the outdoor or standing waits during the hottest part of the day. Exp are Tiki Room or Mickey and the Magical Map at DL or Aladdin and the Animation building at DCA. I also get a cup of free ice water every time I pass a counter service location if I feel I need the water or not during the middle of the day.

Hope this helps!

I was going to suggest this as well. Try to map out your day so you're not waiting in line during the hottest part of the day. Especially if you're prone to overheating.

We were at DLR on 7/5/13 and I didn't have any issues. But then again I'm not prone to overheating.

Like others have noted: Lots of water starting the day before. Wear a hat. Bring a hand towel to wet and place on the back of your neck, if needed.
