Deer Season

We grind most of ours into burger. We only leave the backstraps and a few roasts for jerky unground. My oldest ds loves it, but my youngest will only eat it ground or jerky. I don't really like the roasts or backstraps myself, but we never seem to have a problem finding someone who does!

I used to give alot to our pastor. He always found good uses for it.

Nice thing about buying him a bow is him going hunting with it and giving you the day to yourself. The up side of hunting widow, I guess. We go hunting so that the wives can have time to themselves. Yeah, that's it.
:rolleyes1

The Army keeps him away more than enough thank you very much;) , but I can give up an extra day or two if it means fresh venison in the freezer.:lmao:

Thank him for me for his service!
And tell him 'Good Hunting' in both endeavors.

Today was Marylands gun opener. Went out with my BIL on my MIL's 300 acre farm on the border of MD and PA this morning. Heard shooting all around us, but only saw one doe, trotting a little too fast and far. Im really craving some venison jerky. Oh well, there's next weekend.

That's why its called hunting. And even if I get a deer on opening day, there's always next weekend.

Got the .32 from my dad, who got it from his dad...
And my son will get it from me.
My dad (87) has one that he bought off an older man decades ago. It had belonged to this man's grandfather so it is really old.

I know the name of one of the great, great, great nephews of the guy that sold it to my dad. His family owns some restaurants here. Someday I'll probably look him up to see if he'd like to have it.

The guy that sold it to my dad was just trying to raise a little cash back in the 60s. I have no clue if it's worth anything, but I think it would be nice for it to go back to its original family. I don't think this generation even knows that it exists.

If it's that old and in good (or remotely good) shape, it's worth hundreds, probably well over a grand. Your thought of giving it back to the family of that man is commendable. (Did I make your decision tougher by telling you its potential worth?)

It's in really good shape. I knew it was worth something as a few years ago my sister had it in the car, and a guy offered her $500 for it in the parking lot.

I think it will depend on what kind of a man this younger generation guy is. I met him when he was about 22. I didn't know the story of the gun or his family at the time. He seemed nice then. He was married to the daughter of an acquaintance. They are divorced now - so if he was a real jerk or something he's not getting the gun!

But I've never heard anything bad about him so far. It might not even mean anything to him at his age. I'm older so I'm kind of a sucker for this keep it in the family stuff. My nephew lives in Malibu and would keel over at the thought of owning a gun so he's not getting it.

Been hunting here for a couple of weeks - .270 and a .30-30

1 small buck so far.

Nothings better than venison sausage!

Tomorrow is the closing day of gun deer season here in WI. :) DH just got a deer today and is butchering it as we speak (far, far away from here ;)).

He's been hunting since he was 13 and has gone to Colorado elk hunting a couple times.

He loves it ~ though I don't understand sitting in the cold, freezing your buns off, I get to eat the yummy meat from it. :thumbsup2

Good luck to everyone that has a season left ~ and stay safe! :goodvibes

we just finished Maines deer season.....now on Monday for two weeks will be muzzle loaders.....We didnt see many deer this year as last year was a very bad winter.......I went a few times with my husband and son .......I love to go and usually I am the one that gets a deer.....I am a good shot and I was taught right by my hubby......I hope you get a deer and have a great time being out in the woods.
We are only allowed one deer and we have to have a permit for an antlerless deer....so that means a doe or a young male with minor horns...I know lots of states you are allowed a heck of alot more....

I think in Maryland, if you hunt every season, use every allowed tag, you can get 36 deer!!!!! Marylander's, if I am wrong, please correct me. The info came from a Marylander.

DH and I will be leaving tomorrow for camp. He just got a new Remington 270WSM and is itching to take it for a walk!! He used to have a Remington 30-06 pump, but for some odd reason, could never get it sighted in to a point he was happy with. We always have heard that pumps aren't as accurate as bolt actions:confused3 . No problem getting the 270 zero'd in. Just sold my Remington 280 pump. Felt the same way as DH did with his 30-06. I hunt with a Browning 300 WSM stainless stalker A bolt and haven't missed a deer yet!!! We also hunt inline muzzleloader and archery. Oh, and don't forget spring gobbler season!!

Trying our hand at processing our own venison this year. Between DH, his brother and I, we purchased our electric saw, electric slicer, grinder, sausage stuffer, meat mixer, food processor, scales.....did I miss anything??? Oh yea, got a Masterbuilt smoker. I already did a turkey in it, delicious!!!!

Wishing everyone and happy, and especially safe, hunting season!!!!

we always butchered our own deer, until the year we all got one....in one day.....so off to the butcher we drove......since then we have had our meat processed...one time we did the moose on my kitchen table......after that NEVER EVER AGAIN....the other moose went to the butcher up north at the tagging station..
we do the good steaks, and hamburg....no roasts anymore

MD has one of the most liberal bag limits for deer in the country. Im not exactly sure what it is, but I'll never come close to filling it. Besides, I only have two freezers.

I live in a part of WV that closes down the school systems for the entire week just for deer season!!! Lol!! We're such rednecks!!!

Anyway, DD17 got an 8 pt!!! She cries everytime she shoots a deer, but she LOVES goin' out in the woods hunting with her DBF.

Just sighted in the rifle (.32 Winchester, lever action, iron sights), getting ready for Monday here in Pennsylvania.

Any other deer hunters out there?

We've had early muzzle loader season and archery season for deer already, but rifle season is the BIG one for me. I actually look forward to deer camp as much or more than the hunt. Sitting around in long johns playing cards, watching the Steelers play football, eating chili, going to bed early but not being able to sleep.

Good luck to all, and be safe.

Good evening all. My DH has shot his first one for this season a few weeks ago. It was a Buck 155 lbs. 9pts. with his Ruger muzzleloader.

Today he was fortunate and got another one. We can get two with a bow. This one was a buck 145, 8 pointer. He has a Hoyt XT2000. What ever that is.

I am the "wrapologist" of the family. We cut and wrap our own. Mostly steak, chops and stew meat. We all know the tenderloins are the best. we give away the neck and shoulders.

I am usually a hunting widow from Sept. 15th-Dec.15th. All I know if he is going to get another one he better before next Sunday. We will be leaving for WDW that morning. He was not to happy about giving up a week of hunting.

Our daughter and son-n-law and two grandsons are driving to WDW in 24hrs.:scared1:
We will be flying down and meeting them at POP Century. My DH is doing it for them. I can't believe he said that he would go. He doesn't like crowds :lmao: . He would rather be in the woods. He is an outdoorsman. Hunting, snowmobiling, fourwheeling.

Have a safe hunting season.

Checking back in. House full of kids. Son's BD. Leaving tomorrow for a 2 day hunt. Buck and doe tags. Thanks to all who checked in. Good luck all, and be safe. I'll post about my harvest later, or lie about it if necessary.
;)
