Dedicated vs lock-off is one more desireable?

I just received a call from MS saying that my wait list for a 2BR at VWL came through, (didn't know I was on one). When I called they said that the current reservation was for a dedicated and the wait list was for a lock-off. My question is does anyone find one more desireable to the other? We're traveling the first week of Dec. with my wife and I in one room and son and grandaughter in the other.

When we need a two-bedroom unit we always specify a lockoff. With a lockoff...at OKW at least...you get two exterior entry doors, two balconies, and limited kitchen facilities in the studio portion.

Also, a dedicated two-bedroom makes it easier if guests are staying for only part of your stay. In September, we'll have guests in the studio portion for five nights. When they leave, we just close the doors and stay in the one-bedroom. No moving required.

Some people with young children staying in the studio portion, prefer the dedicated two-bedroom since there is no outside entrance or balcony in the children's bedroom.

dhesterpa...Since you won't be using the "living room" for sleeping accomodations, I don't think the lock-off makes much difference.

We have had both dedicated and lock-off 2BR's, and there are benefits to each. The lock-off is a 1BR and a studio with the connecting door open, so each unit can be reserved separately. Thus, all lock-offs have separate exits to the hallway. For us, that was no big deal, but it might be more important if your son & granddaughter want to come and go without disturbing you (though coming in through the "living room" of a dedicated 2BR is fairly removed from the master bedroom anyway.

With the lock-off, you get the kitchenette, toaster, etc.

With the dedicated 2BR (at least at VWL), you get a walk in closet in the second bedroom (versus the smaller one in the lock off) and a nice large open area in front of the bathrooms (mainly used by my daughters to dump junk). :)

I don't see a particular advantage to having one or the other in your situation, unless the granddaughter is small and may be tempted to exit the second bedroom by herself.

Our family prefers the lockoff especially if we take friends or family with us that way thety essentially have their own room so if our kids are sleeping they are not coming in and out of our side of the room and waking them up.

In addition to the information already provided. I would add that in the case of VWL not all of the 2 bedroom villas are the same size. There are what I believe to be 6 or possibly 8 (can't remember exactly how many but a search will likely provide this information) extra large 2 bedroom villas. These extra large "corner 2 bedroom villas" are dedicated. They have a very large living room...maybe even larger than the living room at OKW. Keeping the dedicated villa reservation will put these corner units into the available pool of villas when you check in. I would definitely keep the dedicated reservation. Good luck.

Isn't there also the difference that a dedicated has two beds in the second bedroom, and a lock-off has a bed and a sofa? This would make a big difference to me if people in the second bedroom would prefer to have their own bed, rather than sharing or bunking on a pull-out bed.

And aren't all the 2 BR at SSR lock-offs?

You're so silly!

No, each SSR building has 20 dedicated 2Bs, and 24 lockoffs (plus 2 Grand Villas).

In fact, every dedicated 2B at SSR has two queen beds in the second bedroom. The lockoffs obviously have the Queen + sofabed arrangement.

Beca...you are correct, all BWV 2BR's are lock offs.

And I can't believe I forgot about the two queen beds in the second bedroom vs the queen & the sleeper/sofa! Where is that "headslap" smilie!

I guess I forgot about it because we've never found the sleeper/sofa to be an issue....DD13 had no complaints at all! But I could see where that would play into some people's thoughts on the difference between the two.

Good catch, Beca!:)

Thanks, Granny! I still get a little nervous about posting wrong info...since I am still so new at this!!!

It's also important for those who do NOT need the second bed in the second bedroom - it's a lot nicer to have the room provided by the sleeper sofa.

AS I recall, dosen't the "lockoff" have it's own temperature controls??
That could be very important, especially if one group or the other has different "temperature " requirements at night.
We just spent 4 nights with friends of ours at their condo in Ocean City, Md. They wouldn't turn the AC under 80 degrees under any circumstances.
We were just roasting in our bedroom.

That is SOOOO funny!!! Just think of my posts as this...proof yet again that the number of words spewing out of someone's mouth has NO direct correlation to the amount of knowledge in their head!!! I'm sure I will feel much more "knowledgeable" after at least ONE trip home to where I spend so much of my time writing about!!!

Anyway...thanks for the laugh!! There are a lot of funny posts this morning!!!

PS....has anyone else noticed that this guy...:rotfl:...can be a little hard to "catch" in the mornings? Kind of like a video game!!!!

my opinion - if you are traveling with children (especially small children) then the dedicated is defined better.

If all adults and some of the adults like to party - then the lock out is better.

We had a 2BR lock-off for our May trip when DS graduated and took along 3 friends. It was great because they had their own door so they didn't bother us when they got in late - although I couldn't sleep until they were all back in the room. They also had their own thermostat which was another good thing because they liked their room very chilly! I don't know how they were able to sleep in there! I would've needed an electric blanket! New questions just keep coming up: in a 2BR dedicated, is there still a door that shuts off the 2nd bedroom from the kitchen / living area?

DrTomorrow

Yes, every bedroom in a dedicated two-bedroom villa has a door to afford guests complete privacy.
