Decreasing Number on Reservation

What happens if I need to decrease the number on a reservation? Do I get to keep the time? I'm thinking it should be easier than adding....

We have a party of 9 going (7 adults, 2 kids). Although they say they are 100% coming, I'm not sure 100% sure about my two step son's yet (one is starting college... the other I'm just afraid him and his girlfriend won't plan right). If I make my reservations for the 9 of us, but find out I need to decrease it, can I without losing my time?

My ADR reservations start in 8 days ... no wait 7 days!!!

We have called and reduced numerous times. While there is no penalty reducing by even 1 or 2 may open up a reservation someone else is looking for.

I would go ahead and make the reservation for the ideal situation. My ADR window is the same as your's and I don't have a solid "yes" from anyone (including myself!) and I'm making mine for 4 people. Not getting those hard-to-get ones is a real bummer and you can potentially be out of luck completely if you wait beyond the window opening.

Make the reservation for the number of people you expect to come. If you wind up dropping a person or two, it won't be a problem. Just show up at the restaurant with your new number. Disney understands that things happen.

You can call but sometimes there isn't a table for less and you don't want them to cancel your reservation. Or you can just leave it alone and when you show up for your ADR, tell them there are less of you in case they have a smaller table and need the bigger one for someone else.

I made all of mine for 2 for my upcoming trip. I'm solo, but other than Beaches & Cream which I'm pretty much over, I can't really think of any that specifically have a table for one, so I'd likely get a table for two anyway. Knowing I wanted 'Ohana breakfast and knowing that for whatever reason 'Ohana does not play nicely with a one-person reservation (as in there is NEVER availability for one -I've heard it has issues with odd-numbered parties in general), I did that for 2 - and it was just easier to leave the 2 in place when making the other reservations. It also gives me a little flexibility if an area friend decides to join me for a meal - the seat is already accounted for. I have been assured by multiple CMs that as long as I show up there will be no no-show charge.

Always make your reservation(s) for the maximum amount of people that could be there. If some don't show, that's not a problem and there's no penalty. With a group of nine, if you make a reservation for seven and nine are going to be there, you will need another table added to your group and that might not be an option since the restaurant has already booked as many parties as they could. However, by booking nine and going to seven, you could free up a table for two and a stand by couple could be seated or the next priority seating couple could be seated earlier.
