I know there are at least a couple of people on the Disboards that have mentioned DECA. My dd is going to the NJ competition (?) next month. Just wondering what's expected of her? What really happens? I did read the papers that her teacher sent home but still want to know from a participant's point of view.
TIA!

I can't help you here, but when I got to college it was very uplifting and shocking what DECA does in some high schools. At my school, it was a joke. So seeing how my college roommate went to national conference and got so much out of it was surprising. BTW, my roommate is now a brilliant businesswoman. :thumbsup2

DECA is very popular at our high school. We usually have several kids make it to Nationals (I think 14 went last year). The JV golf coach is the adviser for that program but I don't know much more then that. Seeing the names of the kids that are in DECA, they are some of the top students in their grades. None of our kids have interests in the "business" field so they haven't really looked into joining.

OK, now it's gettin real. My dds teacher is very impressed with her project. They go next weekend to States (I guess each state has it's own?) in Cherry Hill. My dd is def not in the top of her class but is well-organized and determined, and the teacher was pleased because she did a brand new business, not an already established one. Where is the Dis-poster who's tag talks about DECA??

I did it in high school, regionals and states.

My sister also competed regionals, states and nationals twice (I think)

Back in the day, I did the same thing in regionals than I did in states. We had to show up at a certain time, present, mock interview, and be done. We had to be present for the awards ceremony. One of the nights there was a talent show for all the schools.

Back in the 80's, there was some partying going on in rooms without the teacher knowing (or knowing and choosing to ignore). I would think this would be way stricter now.

My sister loved it. It wasn't that big of a deal for me, but it was kind of fun.

This thread brings back memories! I was in DECA, but that was 20+ years ago. I did regionals and states. I qualified for nationals, but did not attend. I had the choice of that or another big class trip that year (both trips involved airfare and were expensive--couldn't do both), and I opted for the other trip.

I did a big project on advertising and I used the same project for all competitions.

All the best to your dd, OP!
