Debt Dumpers 2025

Our normal is Monday, but I also went to the one by my work at lunch yesterday to get chips for lunch. And it was packed. We will have to go this evening as we're doing Thanksgiving on our own, just the 2 of us. Our 5 friends that were coming over wound up changing their plans. So I will have to find a small ham and everything else (potatoes, corn casserole, green bean casserole, rolls, pie) to go with it. We talked about doing Cracker Barrell because it might be cheaper than buying and making all that food. But we don't want to eat out. Plus, we have to cook to go to my parents for Thanksgiving this weekend. They're having fajitas and tamales, so normal Thanksgiving food won't work, lol.
:sad2: Chips for lunch!!?? I think you meant to say apples for lunch, no?
A whole pineapple is $2 at our Shop Rite. Dh buys one every week and cuts it up when it's ripe. I put some in a little container the night before so in the morning I can just grab and toss it in my lunchbox. So easy. He has it down to a science. Once all the green on the outside has turned to gold, it's perfectly ripe and omg sweeter than candy but it also has a lot of fiber.

Your doctor would prefer this over chips for lunch and you would actually feel better eating this way over time. It's a win-win and a pineapple is way cheaper than chips.

Thanks. The plan is actually to just put the $60 with the original $30 to make a $90 payment instead of paying it 2 times a month. I'm just going to put the $90 in my budgeting spreadsheet for the month. Then it's not just floating around. All of this is getting me excited to try and get some debt knocked out over the next decade (seems like it'll take that long, hopefully not, lol). But I am excited. Trying to get DW excited too. Problem is, it's my debt and not hers. It's my car loan, it's my student loan, it's my CCs. So that's why she doesn't see why she has to pay anything toward all that. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. I'm just excited (as if you can't tell).

This will only be worthwhile if you enter these new prices in your budget and then, at the time of the month where you would have paid that higher bill, apply the savings to CC#1. Don't just let it lost in the shuffle and you go out to dinner to celebrate.
It's ok to make more than one payment per month.

So let's say you make the usual monthly payment of $30 on Dec 1 to CC#1and you do that.
Well then let's pretend you normally pay your internet bill on the 10th and up until now you've been budgeting $100 for that. Now it's only $40. So on the 10th you'll take that $100 and pay $40 to internet bill and $60 to CC#1. Keep doing this with every little bit you save here and there, even if it's only $5, just do it. You will be amazed how fast you pay it down.

No, it was chips. I can't keep veggies and fruits at work because I have to have something I can keep in my desk. And so, I got some baked chips to go with my tuna I had brought. But if at home, I eat fruits and veggies with my tuna and other sandwiches (last night I had a peanut butter and honey sandwich and fruit).

Because you're married!! Mi casa su casa.

This is great but what about the money you're not going to be paying for storage every month? That should be accounted for as well. I lean toward applying it toward your debt snowball but you do you. Just make sure you've taken it into account and that money is applied to debts and not considered to be fun money.

SHe does know that since you are married, your debt is her debt and vise versa.

It will be added in as well. I thought about trying to put all the extra into an EF since we don't have one. Well, we have one, but it's not enough. But everyone is saying pay off debt first. So that's what we're going to do. I'm just excited to be able to pay more toward my debt and get it knocked out faster ... maybe.

In the NJ/NY/Philly area, it is traditional to give cash/check for a wedding gift. A huge chunk of our wedding gift money went to pay off a very old Amex bill and student loan of dh's that was beyond collections years before we even started dating. Was that my debt or my problem? No, but we were married and it needed to be taken care of. His obligations became ours.
We had already bought our condo 2 years before. He provided the down payment but his credit was bad so we had to put it in my name only. (Seriously, if my sons ever told me they did a thing like this, I was be livid and think they are utterly whipped but I digress.)

Once we were married, I had him added to the mortgage and the deed. My cousin is a real estate attorney and said it really isn't necessary once you're married but I wanted to make sure that his credit rating gets some improvement from all these payments being made. His pay is going toward it so why should I be the only name getting credit for it?
We lived in the condo for 3 years until I was pregnant with ds#1 but that really helped his credit a lot. When we bought our current house, we could put it in both of our names and go conventional.

I agree for the most part. She drives the car quite a bit, and she used the CCs too to help rack up that debt. So I agree on those. But the school loan is from before we met. So, I feel I should be paying that. That part is mine only. She had nothing to do with it.

I would take the time to ask your credit card companies if she’s considered an associate or the owner of the account .
Keep her name off your debts … She should have at least one card in her name only in case of emergency . If something happens to you Do not let her use your credit . If she does , she will then assume your debt.
You are getting bad advice on this topic.

If you have depleted your EF for everyday cost of living expenses, your budget is not accurate. Just making a list of expenses is not a plan.

I don't think this was meant for me as I'm not getting advice on CCs. But I will address as if it were. She is a user on both of my CCs and has been for quite some time. We did that so she could build some credit. She didn't have any (not bad, but didn't have any). So she does have a CC in case of an emergency, although we haven't used either of them in quite some time. I keep a close eye on them.

Do you ever tell her no, that's my car? Do you ever take back the stuff she charged and say that's my stuff?
I don't expect you to, but essentially that is what she's saying. Not my problem, that's your debt.
That is beyond selfish. She is fully enjoying the fruit of that debt but wants no responsibility in paying the debt or even just slightly cooperating with saving money so you are able to pay it. (Sigh... bang head against wall.)

Remind me, wasn’t it you who worked hard to pay down the payday loan she got a couple of years ago?
