Debt Dumpers 2025

What ports are you going to? If it’s Cozumel I’d say skip excursions, they don’t really have nice beaches there and your kids are too little for snorkeling. There’s a shopping area you can get some Mexican vanilla and chocolate at and then get back on the ship and enjoy it with less crowds.

We're doing this one! I specifically didn't choose the Cozumel one because I hadn't heard great thing about it overall. Not saying we won't do that later when our youngest is a little older, but this seemed like a better itinerary. We probably won't get off in Nassau.

That’s a nice itinerary and 8 days is a perfect length. Key West wasn’t letting the big ships dock there for a bit but the state of FL said they couldn’t keep them out and now let one bigger ship and some smaller ones dock each day. It’s nice to walk around and visit the southern most point for a photo stop. Make sure you get a slice of key lime pie too. We never get off the ship in the Bahamas but we also live in SoFla and can do water sports and beach days anytime we want, so enjoying the ship is our main goal.

End of April round up!

Financial
  1. I started the 529s! Wooo! Now to not look at them for 10 years!
Hopefully that included picking funds, not just making a deposit. I've heard some stories about college funds and even 401ks where people take the first step of contributing, but not that second step of actually buying a fund. They only get the little savings account interest on that money for however many years o_O

It gives you like three options for how to use the funds when you sign up. You can't actually contribute without doing that first.

I think the "no beard" rule is really dumb given it's 2025.
I agree. My DH is a Sheriff's Deputy and they had a no beard rule for years and years, but then a few years ago, a bunch of the guys started getting doctors notes from their dermatologist that being clean shaven was hurting their skin and they needed to be able to wear a beard. After enough of the guys got these notes, they just changed the rules and now they can have "well manicured" beards.

That's great! My DH definitely keeps his beard well manicured lol. He spends more time on it then I do on my hair. And my hair is about halfway down my back lol.

May goals! May is going to be tight due to some payments coming up and some work on the house I want to do. And camp payments. And probably other things I'm forgetting blargh.

Financial
  1. Pay the final 3k for joining the neighborhood pool club. I will be so glad when these payments are done! AND then we get to use the pool all summer. I already told my husband for the price we basically have to live there. But it's a good investment since there isn't a regular community pool nearby and the kids will be able to go there alone when they're teenagers during the summer (saving us camp fees!)
  2. Pay camp fees. Ugh. Not looking forward to that one. The good news is we'll get it back in FSA stuff later, but the bad news is later is 'after they attend' so that money is gone until August at least.
  3. Stop eating out. Mother's Day gets a waver. I'm wondering if there's a way to like ease us into this more or make this more likely. Maybe just on Fridays? And then try to wean that down to twice a month then once a month/only special occasions?

Health, Fitness & Self Care
  1. Keep off the weight I lost this year. Holding steady but we have eaten out a hell of a lot this month due to all the school events. It's only going to get worst too because the 5th grader is graduating to middle school so we've got all these late nights coming up!
  2. Cook more at home. Ties into 1.
  3. Walk at least 2 miles a day. I haven't been doing this but I HAVE been swimming on the days I'm in the office.
  4. Plan one-on-one time with the kids.

Home/Projects
  1. I have scheduled someone to come out to give quotes on a couple of things I would really like to have done. We have a sunroom that is used for storage because it's tilted--I'm pretty sure it was a porch that was a DIY enclosure in the 60s, all the metal windows are bent/broken, and it's not insulated. I'd love to actually be able to use it as a room. We also have a basement with walls that are letting water in so it'd be nice to get that fixed and see what remodeling looks like. Right now the washer and the dryer are on entirely opposite sides of the place, I hate it. I just want to know if any of these things are doable within a budget or if I'd need to win the lottery to do any of it.
  2. I've been watching too many DIY tiktoks BUT I think I might be able to do a board and batten thing near my front door so that that area would look less cluttered and maybe my kids wouldn't throw their jackets/bags all over the place. I am not handy, but tiktok has convinced me I COULD be, so I'd like to do this project this month!

I have fallen victim of the tiktok/ig/Pinterest "I can do it!" confidence. 🤣 I have so many things pinned and saved to try, because if Sally from Iowa can do it, so can I! (This is wildly tbd)

Goals for May now that I have *some* time back in my life.

I have a dumpster being delivered Thursday. It's supposed to rain and be gross Tues-Fri but I wanted it here and ready to go for the weekend when it will be nice. I'm purging the absolute mess out of this house after everything I've been thru with my mom's house.

Once that's done, I'm starting on the house projects, like finishing my daughters room I've been working on since last June 🫣 and then doing my son's room (they're switching rooms so I need to get his less pink and purple 🤣).

We did a massive grocery shopping trip and have tons of food in the house now. I'm trying to prep some dinners for the weeknights. Because...

DD8 got accepted into her gyms AAU gymnastics team. She practices Tues/Thurs/Fri from 4:30-6. DD9 has softball games Tuesday nights anywhere between 6pm and 9:30pm and practice on Thursday from 7:30-9 with an additional practice on Sundays. So basically we need to eat dinner at 4pm or 10pm and pack a million snacks for in between our running crazy. 😵‍💫

It's going to be insanely hectic for the next 6 weeks and I need to get us into a good spot where we aren't eating out non-stop.

I have 179 days until our cruise. My goal is to lose these last 20ish pounds by then. I have a plan in place to make it happen and feel confident I can actually do it. The girls have been asking to start working out and doing some running and light weights, so I think we're going to make it a family thing.
I signed up for the big localish half marathon again this fall that I ran and got hurt on last year. Redemption is mine!

tip that a co-worker passed on to me back when I had kids who we were running around for stuff during the dinner hours-think about the kind of food you would default to on the go IF you were eating out and advance prepare stuff to make it quickly when time is short. back then my kids would frequently ask for Mexican stuff-burritos in particular b/c they are easy to eat in the car. I would make large batches of ground beef w/taco seasoning then let it cool and freeze it in ziplock gallon bags. when I wanted to make burritos I could grab a couple of cups of it, microwave it for a minute or two and put it in a flour tortilla smeared w/canned refried beans, shredded cheese and salsa (I still do this for ds to make nachos with-i keep the little cups of microwave queso on hand). i like grilled chicken wraps so I would have dh (who likes to bbq) do batches of chicken breasts up that I would pre-cut and again bag/freeze. only a minute or two to microwave for a warm wrap.

Yup! I have a bunch of that in the freezer now. I also pre-made some meals to just toss in the oven or crock pot before we go anywhere to be ready when we get home.

Good to see everyone's goals for May. I haven't posted in this group in a while just because it's been busy, and we've been trying to keep on track. Here are some of our May goals as well as April results.

Personal
- Eating healthier: Went to the cardiologist about 3 weeks ago. He told me I needed to make some changes. Basically, he told me to cut back on red meat and eat more chicken and fish. Been a slow change to more chicken and fish, although we did make a chicken and rice crockpot meal using canned chicken (I'll use canned when I cook). And I do get shrimp sometimes if we go out to eat, but DW won't let me cook seafood in the house because it stinks up the place.
- More Exercise: Also, he wanted me to start exercising more. So, I've started walking between 2-3 miles per day except for Tuesdays when I have bible study and Wednesdays when we have prayer group and choir practice. I've also pretty much cut out fried food too. I've started eating fewer breads/carbs, a lot fewer sweets and more veggies and fresh fruits. As a result, I've lost approximately 8 pounds. It was a tad more, but we went home this weekend because my dad fell and broke both arms. So, we ate out a little more than normal (4 straight days of Tex-Mex), so I gained a pound back.

Financial
- Stay afloat financially: We're managing to do that. We had some money leftover (for now anyway) going into our next check. And considering it was the first part of the month when rent is due, that's a huge deal. It's always toughest at the beginning, especially with an unexpected trip home. However, I did miss a CC payment since we had to rush to town to be with my dad. I just forgot it was due. So, I'm going to call them and see if they can waive the late fee since I've never missed a payment.
- Lower our eating out: We've continued to lower this, but we did fail this weekend when we went home as we ate out every meal. Luckily, her grandmother paid for 3 of the 4 meals. But we've cut it back to just a couple of times a week. Usually, Chickfila after choir on Wednesdays and then a meal out at some point over the weekend.
- Sell, sell, sell: We've started going through some of the boxes we've had packed for the 3 years since we moved to DFW. And we've started selling some stuff. DW likes to sell on Marketplace, although I'm not a fan. Been ok thus far. But I worry about her meeting strangers in public. She's sold off 4 unused purses, 4 pairs of my shorts (3 with tags still on them) and 15 sets of scrubs from the days when she worked in the medical field. We do have boxes and boxes of china from our wedding, but we don't know where to go to sell those. So that'll be the next part of the sell, sell, sell project.
- Save for Chicago: We've just stockpiled the money from selling stuff as we're going to Chicago for the National Sports Collections Convention this summer. It's for my 50th birthday and our 20th anniversary, so it's a pretty special trip. We've paid off the hotel, booked our flights and we got our tickets to the Cubbies game (they were a gift from my parents for our birthdays since hers is the day before mine). So, Chicago is paid off except for spending money.

Home/Projects
- Create an office space upstairs: The goal was to go through the boxes and sell/get rid of as much as we could, so I could create an office space in our upstairs bedroom. It's also our guest room, so it can't be a big space. But I'd like to have a small desk and a shelf/cabinet up there for my sports card side business.
- Growing veggies: I failed miserably on my first try at it. I believe the frost hit them a few weeks after I planted. Or something. Not really sure. My grandmother and mother both had green thumbs. I didn't get that gene, lol. I think I missed planting season for DFW, but I might try something else here in the coming weeks.
- Keeping yard: I have kept it mowed until recently when it seems we've had 10 inches of rain in the past month. It's so wet right now that I couldn't get a bush hog on it. So, I will have to wait. However, it's supposed to rain all week. I did, however, manage to trim back a tree a few weeks ago. Got all those limbs hauled off. Need to trim back roses once the weather cooperates as well as weed and fix the flower bed.

Sorry you needed to rush home - elderly parents seem to be a bit of theme on here lately.

But you seem to be doing pretty well on both the health front and the financial one. Great work.

We do have boxes and boxes of china from our wedding, but we don't know where to go to sell those

noone is buying china anymore, even the online places that used to for resale to folks looking to fill out a set or replace pieces. so much of it got donated during the pandemic to the local to us charity places that they stopped accepting it (along with china cabinets) and now sell full boxes of all sizes of plates for a dime per piece for people to use as shooting targets :sad1: our everyday dishes finally bit the dust and were getting wonky in the microwave (microwave safe but they were getting hot to the touch) so when got rid of them and now use our wedding china day to day. at least we are getting some use out of them.

For marketplace sales, I would recommend using a very public place as the meet up. i.e. police station, public library, or starbucks.

I'm using my parents wedding gift set as our every day plates. I also use my grandma and great grandmas crystal serving dishes and such for every day dinners. I always wanted to save the dishes for "a special occasion". Well, my dad dying made me realize that every dang day I'm alive is a special occasion and to use the good china.

Thanks. I guess I meant crystal (the clear stuff). We have unopened boxes of crystal bowls, plates, whatever. Quite a bit of it. So people aren't buying that either? Very frustrating if so because now we have a ton of it with nothing to do with it. Guessing it's headed for the dumpster.

Unfortunately you can't give crystal away, we inherited a bunch of it but it is worthless right now.
