Debt Dumpers - 2016

Just need to VENT
OMG-in an effort to save money I decided to learn about how to have your hair dyed at a hairdresser.
Now this is my regular place to get my haircut and get highlights.
I figured I would switch to all over dye to maybe continue doing this at home.
Well it stung like H*^% and there is dye all over my neck and the color is so wrong. The cut is a mess
and i am in tears. I have thick naturally curly hair and right now it is straight and tooo short.
I always know a good cut when i can just leave with my hair wet and let it dry on its own.
This lady insisted she style it and blow dry it. Oh boy what a lesson to learn the hard way. I would have been better to go to the drug store and buy a box and youtube and try it myself.
So my big splurge on myself cost me $75.00 and I hate it.
Lesson learned --I will pay extra for the cut and wait for someone I know understands how to cut thick curly hair and have more self confidence to try home hair dying.
Thank goodness hair grows.
Hugs Mel

I'm so sorry! I also have curly hair and it is so so frustrating when the hairdresser doesn't understand how much it shrinks when it's dry. I don't have any advice, but I hope you feel better.

I hope everything works out and the car lasts until September!! Hopefully something was just stuck on it!

It drove fine today so fingers crossed! The brakes are also starting to make a little noise - I'm sure it could use new brake pads but I don't want to put the money into them at this point - unless they start getting worse and it won't be safe to drive. Otherwise it'll just be the regular oil changes from here on out!

Sorry to hear you got a bad cut - I also have curly hair and you are right you really need someone who knows what they are doing. Now as for colouring your hair yourself - if you are going for an all over colour that is pretty simple to do at home - I do it every few weeks - GREYS! What you need is to find a hairdressing warehouse or something like that - here is Australia there is a hairdressers called 'Hair House Warehouse' they have a small salon but their biggest thing is they sell all sorts of hair products - you will need a bottle of bleach and then buy the tubes of colour - there will be instructions with the bleach bottle about ratios of bleach to colour - the shop assistant should also be able to steer you in the right direction. EG the bleach I use it is equal parts bleach to colour from the tube. I have a colour brush and bowl like the hairdressers use to get to my hairline - I just section my hair and apply using the mirror to help me see.

I used to use the box hair dyes from the supermarket but they dried my hair out a lot - using this new method my hair is staying in much better condition.

Good luck with tracking down a store :-)

I'm sorry to hear about your bad haircut experience! I would ask for a refund...

Also, I use Clairol Natural Instincts when I want to change my color just a bit but not drastically. I wouldn't use the permanent color since it's damaging to your hair. So sorry again for your bad experience!

Well
I have learned my lesson
Thanks for everyones kind words of support.
She did not use bleach she just used a permanent color,,and it stung the entire time-so i think maybe I am allergic to the stuff. I have rinsed my scalp 3 times since coming home and it feels better. I also took an allergy pill and the redness is going down.
Interestingly i just got an email survey from the salon so I filled it out,,maybe I will get a refund.
I am going to drop by my Beauty Supply Outlet and talk to them about alternatives that may be available.
I also think I should cover my face perimeter with some vaseline to protect the skin, when dyeing my hair.
I do have greys. I asked for a 1 inch cut and she cut atleast 4 inches. It was like she couldn't figure out how to cut and style it so she just kept cutting.
Hugs to you all

So sorry and I wholeheartedly understand! I went to my hair stylist (who I have been going to for 10 years) before the holiday and asked her to cut my hair like Kelly Ripa's (so a nice longer bob). Somehow she looked at the picture and decided she had bangs. It looked awful. I had to go back and ask her to cut it shorter to try and get the strange bangs to blend. Now to wait for it to grow out.

I am joining in! I haven't read all the pages, but am determined to significantly pay down our debt over the next 12 months!! We have ALOT of it! At this point, I am focusing on some small loans (financed our a/c unit, old business loan for our now defunct business, and Hubs' motorcycle loan), and all of our credit cards! We have several smaller ones and three VERY BIG ones! When all of the credit cards are paid off, I am going to target our school loans, which are pretty big. And I'm not even done with school yet!

I am doing a modified "debt snowball". We are paying off the 3 small loans with our tax returns this year. I chose to do that, because it would free up the largest amount in payments per month. Plus, our a/c loan was 1 year same as cash and I want to pay it off before the interest hits! We will then start attacking the credit cards from smallest to largest! We are taking about $2000 of our tax returns and putting it in an emergency fund.

I get paid the same amount monthly (I work for the school system.. it is hourly, but divided up so it is like a salary.. hard to explain but basically my pay is the same each month regardless of if I am working. So I get paid in the summer even though I don't work for 8 weeks!) but half my pay goes towards childcare for my son. In the summer, I will take the $$ I save on childcare and put towards debt. Hubs' checks vary depending on how much work he gets. He gets more work when the weather is nice, so any extra he gets I will put towards debt. My goal is to pay a MINIMUM of $10,000 in credit card debt by this time next year!

By the time the next tax season comes around, I hope to pay off one of our larger credit cards in full and then aggressively attack the last two large ones until they are GONE!

Hubs is sort of on board. We are putting ALL credit cards up and locking them in our safe. We have cut cable, I have a very strict grocery budget, and am mindful of our utility bills (keeping lights off, etc..) and how much gas I use in my car. I vow to NOT purchase any clothing or shoes for myself for the next year.

My motivation is to take my whole family on vacation to Orlando when we are done!

That is an awesome goal to have. It sounds like you've really sat down and planned things out well!! just remember - if you have a small set back do not get discouraged!! We all have them! And kudos to you for setting aside that emergency fund!

Ouch! You must've had an allergy to the dye. And one inch and four inches is a huge deal! I'm not normally one to complain at the salon even when I'm not really happy - but I am pretty certain in your case I would have. Did you tell her it was burning your scalp? She should've stopped right then

Hi Gracie
I did tell her it was stinging, I didn't use the word burning but I will know better next time.
It feels better this morning.

So not to go into actual numbers and details, but with left over tax return (going off the estimation since I still dont have all my paperwork) after our trip is paid off, a few planned windfalls like the DF gets a $500 bonus check at 6 months and 12 months after getting someone hired on and them staying those two increments, a paycheck he never got from a company 4 years ago that is in process, and our snowball... we may be debt free by the end of 2016! Plus have about 1200$ in emergency fund! (I say debt free. I am not counting a cc each of us have that is almost to the 7 year point, and an apartment charge that is suppose to be split between two other people and us that if they don't care a flying fig about I may not either unless we get to the point of applying for our home loan in another year and a half.. making that one almost 5 years old by then... and there's an issue with it being there.) And DF is doing his review this week and may get a raise that I'm not factoring into all this! I may not and just let the belt out a tiny bit on our monthly tightwadness!

Ugh, I am absolutely dreading filing taxes this year. DH and I are trying to figure out the best way to do it, but it sounds like we're both going to owe. We need to file separately because otherwise my student loan payment will more than double each month. Combine that with the fact that my salary significantly increased this year and it's looking like no tax return for us. Blergh. At least we get DH's bonus in the spring, but I'm still thinking it's going to be a bummer. I'm hoping we get a fair amount in deductions for purchasing our house, but obviously only one of us will get that filing separately.

I am still waiting for my tax forms from my mortgage company and my property manager from 2015. I'm anxious to get them since I'm hoping I will actually get money back this year - fingers crossed!

I'm still waiting on my mortgage tax forms also. Seems like I had them all by this time last year. I'm hoping for a good refund to go towards my plumbing and roof bill! Lol

Haven't been on Disboards in ages and ages. Popping into say hi and a little financial check-in

Last April and my husband was unemployed for 6 weeks in August and September, right smack dab in the middle of saving for a new car.

Our goal was to buy a "new " car without a loan but my dh not getting his last two paychecks (still going through governmental cogs to get them) and me going to part time work last August so I can go back to school messed with that plan. Fortunately we got a car last month and the loan is for under 2k and we have a plan to have it paid of on 6 months.

The goal for this is to save cash for my credential program that starts in August and hopefully pay off my two smaller loans (about $3500 total). Mostly our debt paying down is on hold till I've finished my schooling.

Exciting news here! I've been invited to give a talk at a conference in Shanghai in early July. My flights and hotel stay will be covered by the group hosting the conference. However, I would love to stay a few extra days and check out the new Disneyland park in Shanghai, which is set to open in mid-June. I'd also love to travel north to see the Great Wall. This feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity - but it will definitely change my debt dumping plans for the year!

Congratulations!:woohoo: How wonderful for you professionally and the chance to see some exciting things in China. I definitely think you shouldn't waste the opportunity to see both of those things whilst you are there especially as the flight and hotel is covered pixiedust: - so that's saving you money right there. Sometimes we have to live a little at the same time as plugging away at our debt.

I agree! I am VERY excited already - time to start planning!!

Oh wow! How exciting for you to visit China!! Congrats Dentam!

Lilpixie.. that is wonderful that you are nearly debt free!! We are starting on our debt snowball and I am hoping to be credit card debt free by the end of 2017!

So, when we cut our cable, I had checked my account after closing and it said I owed money. I shouldn't have owed anything, so I called and the guy said it was for the equipment that wasn't returned BUT it showed in their system that they had just received it all and my account would be updated within 24 hours and I shouldn't have a balance. I went back a couple days to check and the account was no longer active, so I assumed that all was fine. Until I get a bill from them MONTHS LATER for $158!! Ugh! Now I need to call and find out what the problem is. So frustrating!

I also just had some unexpected expenses come up this week. My girls tried out for Alice in Wonderland at our local Performing Arts Center and two of them got parts in the play!! This is their 4th time auditioning but the first time getting a part! There is a $20 participation fee for each of them and we (family) have to actually buy tickets to the show. I don't think we can swing the $16 t-shirts though. So, that will be $60 needed for that. Also, my oldest is going to the Beta Club convention next month and that cost $45. Sigh.. It is exciting, good news.. I just keep thinking how this expense shouldn't be such a burden to us even though it is! Hopefully, it won't be once we get our debt paid!
